ANALYZING 2 WARDROBES: WHEN EVERYTHING LOOKS PRETTY GOOD…

Analyzing 2 Wardrobes: When Everything Looks Pretty Good…

December 13, 2019

Let's jump in and see the good, the bad, and the just plain misjudged from this year's wardrobes!

First up - I'm really happy that I chose this scarf. The color palette is delectable, and the clothes were reasonably easy to find. When tied, this scarf would probably look really interesting. All in all, I'm giving myself a pat on the back for this choice!

2 concerns from the first 4 months:

multiple shades of blue aren't the best possible option - for example, the February scarf can't be worn with the January, nor the March sweaters. It's not a huge issue, but if you're really working toward the smallest possible wardrobe, looking for a consistent accent color in the early stages would be helpful. That ... View the Post

How to build a capsule wardrobe starting with a gemstone bracelet

How to Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe by Starting with a Bracelet – December

December 11, 2019

Yes, I was going to start analyzing our 12-month Hermes scarf-based wardrobes today, but I thought it might be smarter if I got this GORGEOUS bracelet in front of you in time for upcoming gift-giving events. And remember, a nicely printed photograph of this bracelet (right-click on the image below, print it, roll it up and tie it with a piece of re-used ribbon), will be a lovely notice that this bracelet is on the way, if it doesn't arrive it time!

I'm going to tackle analyzing those wardrobes on Fridays. Should be educational - at least for me!

How lovely is THIS?

What great colors - warm and cool, neutral and accent...

THE WEEKLY TIMELESS WARDROBE, WEEK 1: A LIGHT NEUTRAL TOP

The Weekly Timeless Wardrobe, Week 1: A Light Neutral Top

July 1, 2019

We could talk all day about why I'm starting with this particular garment, but I finally determined that I had to start somewhere, so this makes as much sense as any other!

If you're interested in buying a tee shirt like this, consider getting one in your dark neutral, as well as your accent color(s) at the same time. Lots of retailers have discounts on multiple purchases, or will have some sort of site-wide discount in the next few weeks. Get on the mailing list of your favorite tee shirt source, and strike while the price-cut iron is hot!

I want to make this really clear, right from the start: I'm NOT telling everybody to rush out and buy this particular tee shirt! I'm suggesting, rather, that you ... View the Post

10 WAYS TO WEAR WHITE JEANS

White Jeans? They’re Quite Versatile…

May 25, 2019

As I continue to minimize my wardrobe (it's going to take forever!), I try to make a point of keeping individual garments that are most versatile. That's not to say that every piece of clothing you own should be wearable 10 ways, but for core pieces it's worth considering.

I bought these a few weeks ago, to replace my old white jeans, which looked as if I'd worn them to clean... something disgusting...

(I don't consider replacing worn-out garments to be shopping, so by my rules, I haven't violated my "no shopping in 2019" plan! If you make your own rules, you NEVER break them, right?)

I have some thoughts about the "best" jeans to get - uncomplicated and easy to wear often without them being too memorable, or ... View the Post

CREATE A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE – START WITH ART: STREET, BERLIN BY ERNST LUDWIG KIRCHNER

April Travel – Start with Art: Street, Berlin by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

April 12, 2019

After retirement, they decided that they were going to travel to a new destination every 3 months for the first year! Just for a few days....

In the winter, they went somewhere warmer - I'm not sure, but it might have been Barcelona?

When our heroine and her sweetheart hatched this plot, our heroine chose this very evocative painting as her color inspiration:

Yes, April in Paris She's very excited...

Maybe a striped top is cliche to wear to Paris, but she loves her travel outfit - classic, simple, comfortable...

And since retirement is rekindling the romance in their lives, she's sticking with some pink accents. Something about pink just feels romantic to her. And her true love seems to ... View the Post

CREATE A CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY NARCISSUS - BIRTH FLOWER FOR DECEMBER

Narcissus! The Birth Flower for December

December 10, 2018

These feel SO out of season right now - I wonder why they are the flower for December? I'm really happy that it isn't poinsettias (!) but I was expecting to find that December's flower was something... wintery?

What this flower does give us is 3 possible accent colors (orange, yellow and white) to brighten up neutrals during these shortest days of the year. (Northern Hemisphere, of course; for those of you south of the Equator, just hold these ideas for a few months!)

There are some lovely pieces of jewelry available with narcissus - or narcissus-ish flowers:

If you would really like to splurge on a brooch in your birth flower, check out the Joseph Giovanni site. They have three different levels of ... View the Post

FRENCH 5-PIECE WARDROBES BASED ON PANTONE SPRING 2019 COLORS

French 5-Piece Wardrobes based on Pantone Spring 2019 colors

November 16, 2018

Of course, there are no new colors. And for what it's worth, these colors don't necessarily show up in store any more or less than any other colors...

That said, I still love looking at these color every 6 months, and giving some thought to what I might add to a wardrobe in order to really solidly bring an accent color into an otherwise neutral wardrobe. (I'm always happy to do another post showing these pieces worn along-side a Neutral Common Wardrobe, if that would be helpful)

And yes, I'm going to evaluate all of the "4 Outfits based on a painting" posts that I've done. They take a while!

In my next life, I want a job at Pantone naming colors...

First up is Fiesta, which is a nice bright ... View the Post

When Your Wardrobe Plan Hits a Snag – Start with a Scarf: Japanese Irises

September 10, 2018

Our mythical heroine has her scarf chosen for her Capsule Wardrobe, and she's full of optimism!

And while she wants to keep her wardrobe casual, she's still going to indulge in a few pieces of clothing in more feminine, dressy fabrics...

She goes to her closet and picks the 4 garments that she absolutely, positively wants to include in her wardrobe for the autumn:

In some ways, this is a great start, because these pieces all work seamlessly together - 4 garments = 4 outfits!

So with her colors and her style inspiration in front of her, she begins to shop. Since it's going to be cooler weather (she hopes!) in the next few months, her first thought is for another shirt - a nice plaid should do ... View the Post

CREATE A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY ART

But What IS Art? Start with Art – with a Cell Phone Wallpaper!

August 27, 2018

Start with Art is one of my favorite ways to build capsule wardrobes, but the subject begs the question of what qualifies as art? To me, if YOU think it's beautiful and inspiring, that makes it art, at least for wardrobe purposes!

Let's take this striking example:

As is true with so many images on the internet, I can't find the "original" of this, nor can I determine if this has been enhanced or altered in any way.

But that doesn't really matter, if you're just using the powerful image, and striking colors, as your inspiration. Nobody's giving out grades on your wardrobe inspiration!

Tough colors to find, but lovely together...

So let's take a bit of a dive into the process of putting together a ... View the Post

TRY PROJECT 333 FOR AUTUMN 2018

Want to try Project 333 for Autumn? A Couple of Tee Shirts Could be Your Inspiration…

August 15, 2018

She knew that she wanted to pare down her autumn wardrobe - she just needed to find a clear focus for what she wanted to wear for the next few months...

She was pretty seriously interested in Project 333 - it seemed to work for a lot of other people, and so she thought it might be good for her too!

First up, she knew that she needed 2 new tops, so she decided to start with a pair of shirts that really caught her eye and won her heart:

She's very casual, and loves khaki, beige, and ivory, so the first 4 garments were easy to choose:

And she really doesn't need a ton of variety - she likes sweaters and sweatshirts with hoods, and she's only going to wear pants (unless something AMAZING happens in her ... View the Post

CREATE A CAPSULE WARDROBE WITH PROJECT 333

Want to try Project 333 for Autumn? How about Starting with a Scarf?

August 10, 2018

If you're not familiar with Project 333, it's Courtney Carver's brilliant idea to cut your entire closet back to 33 items, for 3 months.

I think a lot about Project 333 - it's a very tidy way to experiment with a smaller wardrobe. And it works beautifully with a 4 by 4 Wardrobe, and a stack of accessories! Let's pretend... It Was a Gift No matter how much she loves a beautiful scarf, she wasn't likely to buy it for herself! But when someone hands it to you, all beautifully wrapped, and presented with so much love, what's a woman to do?

To her, this was the perfect opportunity to organize her wardrobe for upcoming cooler weather, and for school-related functions which always seem to crop up as soon as autumn ... View the Post

how to build a capsule wardrobe step by step starting with nature

Second Phase of Building a Wardrobe, based on an Owl Photograph

May 3, 2018

So far, so good. While we only have 5 pieces of clothing in this wardrobe, with a pair of shoes, these are important first steps - these are pieces that will be worn a LOT...

While this heroine is in need of some more clothes, let's first get her at least a watch and a handbag! Well okay, a few accessories... You don't really need piles of jewelry, or dozens of scarves, to make a big difference in how your wardrobe works for you.

I've always felt that it was a safe assumption that a wardrobe should include more tops than bottoms - the tops are more visible because they're at eye-level, they're close to your face, and they are more likely to need laundering before a pair of jeans... So let's pick up a couple more ... View the Post
