Year 2 – Japanese 24 Seasons of the Year – Geshi - Summer Solstice

Year 2 – Japanese 24 Seasons of the Year – Geshi – Summer Solstice

June 21, 2023

Why yes, this is the EXACT day; enjoy the daylight - if you're in the Northern Hemisphere! And get a good long night of sleep if you're in the Southern Hemisphere...

I wore my linen long-sleeved shirt A TON on Father's Day; we were in the forest, and I found that it was perfect protection from insects.

That got me thinking about the utility of a shirt like this in warm weather - protection from bugs, the sun, cool breezes, air conditioning...

They can provide a nice accent color...

Or you can bring a bit of pattern into a monochromatic outfit:

If you're traveling, having something that covers your shoulders can be important, if you want to visit churches or other places with a dress ... View the Post

Japanese 24 Seasons of the Year – Rittō – Beginning of Winter

Japanese 24 Seasons of the Year – Rittō – Beginning of Winter

November 7, 2022

If it's REALLY the beginning of winter, we will need something warm! I have to admit - I have 2 vests (pink and black) and I wear them a LOT - they're just enough warmth to get me down the block to the drugstore or other "near" errands...

If it hasn't snowed or rained, there's no reason that you can't still wear white jeans. I'm sure someone, somewhere, still feels the prohibition of "white after Labor Day," but we don't accept those limitations!

This next outfit has just a hint of the holiday season...

These really EARLY sunsets can be hard to take...

If you have a favorite accent color, a vest in that color can be both useful and fun!

Maybe if you lie in a snowdrift wearing a white ... View the Post

Japanese 24 Seasons of the Year – Kanro Cold Dew

Japanese 24 Seasons of the Year – Kanro Cold Dew

October 10, 2022

Last Friday, about lunch-time, the temperature started to drop. Just like that - we went from "well, it may warm up later" to "don't forget your gloves..."

It could bounce back, but I have a hunch that autumn is really here!

Are your options for layering warm clothes ready for this sudden arrival?

Some of us wear classic colors - there's no combination more timeless than navy with red...

Just because your favorite neutral is grey doesn't mean that you MUST buy a grey coat or vest...

Frost can be beautiful... it's like a sugar glaze on everything.

If the primary purpose of your casual outerwear is to attend sporting events, why not wear the team colors?

I love the style of this ... View the Post

WEEKLY TIMELESS WARDROBE #48: A PRINT OR PATTERNED SHIRT

Weekly Timeless Wardrobe #48: A Print or Patterned Shirt

February 14, 2022

Remember, we are evolved enough as humans that we can buy our own Valentine's Day gifts... Do something beautiful for yourself today (and every day, frankly!).

Today, I'm pondering the role of a plaid, striped or printed shirt in one's wardrobe...

This little teal and navy cluster is a perfect example of the Triple Top Secret! You can - obviously - wear this outfit just as it's show above; in bitter cold weather, 2 shirts and a sweater isn't excessive. Add a pair of long underwear pants, boots in place of loafers, and some hard-core outerwear, and you'd be fine in Chicago in single-digit temperatures!

But if you own these 4 garments, you have SEVEN outfit possibilities!

depending on the style ... View the Post

February 2022: Six Scarves, 12 Months

February 2022: Six Scarves, 12 Months

February 2, 2022

Back to our favorite scarves!

I'm changing up the order of these scarves each month, just to get a fresh look at things...

When we left this heroine back at the first of the year, she had a tidy 7-piece capsule wardrobe that would be great for a short trip, or for having to go into the office once a week:

So what does a heroine need in February? For me, a bit of an accent color would be handy, and something to wear during that 2-day "faux spring" that we always see, when the weather is up above 15, and the sidewalks are dry!

While I might still want a sweater, my ankles want me to wear cropped pants!

And I am always a firm believer that most of us can get a lot of wear from a good, comfortable pair ... View the Post

WEEKLY TIMELESS WARDROBE #19 – DARK NEUTRAL SHORT-SLEEVE OR LIGHTWEIGHT 2ND LAYER

Weekly Timeless Wardrobe #19 – Dark Neutral Short-Sleeve or Lightweight 2nd Layer

July 19, 2020

Time to check in on our neutral, timeless wardrobe pieces; today we need something to wear on those freakish days in the summer that turn cool, or for the air-conditioning that turns normal places into meat lockers!

First, a simple column of white (or any color, really) can take on a ton of different looks with an overshirt and some accessories:

For me, this is the quintessential summer 2nd layer - a black cardigan that's warm enough to do what needs done, but sheer enough not to look like it's October!

It's kind of a suit... And here again, you could use a LOT of different accent colors!

A black "suit" can also be worn in a million different ways - some days you just want some silver and onyx, and a ... View the Post

CHIC SIGHTING, AND RETHINKING THE ROLE OF LINEN IN MY WARDROBE

Chic Sighting, and Rethinking the Role of Linen in my Wardrobe

June 30, 2021

Yesterday was my birthday, and I had to go shopping...

I had my eye on a linen dress from Eileen Fisher...

When I got to the store at Water Tower Place, the lovely young woman who approached me was wearing the EXACT dress I was looking for, but she was wearing it with a much more "cool weather" feel that I would have imagined. The store was very cold, of course...

This is how she wore the dress:

Okay, you wouldn't wear this out into a blizzard, but this outfit would be more than acceptable in the early autumn, or late spring...

It reminded me of the way that women in Paris wear their summer dresses with sweaters, tights and warm shoes or boots - long past the time of year when most of us would have ... View the Post

WEEKLY TIMELESS WARDROBE #8 – SHORT-SLEEVED LIGHT NEUTRAL SHIRT

Weekly Timeless Wardrobe #8 – short-sleeved light neutral shirt

May 3, 2021

It's starting to feel like summer clothes might actually be useful this year!

What we're looking for this week is the "go-to" shirt for warm weather, to be worn either as a shirt on its own, or as a shirt-jacket over a more bare top:

Pink as a neutral is fun, because it looks like an accent color so often!

yes, this is the same black cardigan and pants that we saw last week; being able to wear clothes in lots of different combinations is sort of the point...

If you're wearing a top that's sleeveless and maybe scoop-necked, or open in the back, having a shirt to wear over is good sun protection, air-conditioning protection, and modesty protection!

Maybe your light neutral is warm rather than ... View the Post

NOVEMBER 2020 SIX SCARVES, TWELVE MONTHS, TWELVE OUTFITS

November 2020 Six Scarves, Twelve Months, Twelve Outfits

November 2, 2020

Oh my, THIS is massive...

Our heroines collectively looked over their growing wardrobes and realized that, if they continued to accumulate clothing 1 outfit at a time, their wardrobes would become more and more unbalanced.

So they went sweater shopping! And for some other tops too...

And some fun socks, because as cold weather sets in in the Northern Hemisphere, we will all be wearing socks frequently. Some of us see our toes only while in the shower for months on end...

This heroine went for 3 well-planned neutral choices, and then a wild-card floral shirt! Heavens yes...

It all fits in well:

And she already has new outfits planned:

This heroine has all kinds of choices right now! I ... View the Post

THE WEEKLY TIMELESS WARDROBE, WEEK 50: A LIGHTWEIGHT SECOND LAYER

The Weekly Timeless Wardrobe, Week 50: A Lightweight Second Layer

July 13, 2020

Can this month be almost half over? Are US Income Taxes due on Wednesday? Yes and yes...

Let's look at finding something nice to wear over our summer outfits when we venture into air conditioning, or to grab when we're sitting outdoors until the wee hours...

This is a pretty easy item to add to your wardrobe - you're looking for something lightweight, but still enough to feel covered when you need a little bit more than a tank top or sundress during warm weather:

If you're mentally assembling a wardrobe to go with one of our six "Six Scarves, 12 Months" scarves, there are still good options available.

And for what it's worth, these scarves cycle in and out of being on sale; keep your eyes open!

I ... View the Post

REVISITING THE TRIPLE TOP SECRET

Revisiting the Triple Top Secret

June 9, 2020

Watching lots of people wandering about with backpacks, this last weekend, I was wondering what everybody was carrying! I know, water bottles, spare phone batteries etc. but I wondered if they had any clothes with them...

And that got me to thinking about what you want to have handy if you're going to be out for a LONG day. Say you start out with breakfast and sight seeing early in the morning. You're going into areas that are air conditioned, and the weather might turn flat-out cool later in the evening. What to do?

This is something that I've tried to remember to do, when packing, for years - make certain that I've got at least 3 tops with me that can ALL be worn together, or in any various combination of 2, or ... View the Post

THE WEEKLY TIMELESS WARDROBE, WEEK 34_ SHORT-SLEEVED NEUTRAL SHIRT

The Weekly Timeless Wardrobe, Week 34: short-sleeved neutral shirt

February 24, 2020

I thought that shirts like this would be EVERYWHERE by now... Silly me!

But after I thought for a minute about the overall plan, I realized that any lightweight shirt in which one can roll their sleeves is what we really want. This shirt covers the back of your neck when it gets too sunny, protects you from vicious air conditioning, and covers anything that you'd like to keep under wraps! (these shirt can make great swimsuit coverups...)

First up, remember our 6 scarves? There are, of course, nice summery shirts that are perfect with these scarves:

A shirt like this is perfect is you work in 1 of those "no shirts above the elbow" environments (I promise you, they exist!), but you want to go ... View the Post
