CREATE A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE - START WITH ART: WALL OF LIGHT WHITE BY SEAN SCULLY

Start with Art: Wall of Light White by Sean Scully

July 5, 2019

I love this artist... And this painting is a perfect ensemble of neutral colors!

We're Going WHERE? To her sweetheart's college Chess Club reunion, that's where!

She decides to pack on an outfit-by-outfit basis; she knows that the weather is going to be hot, so she's focusing on linen, and shorts, and a couple of tops that will cover her up if she wants to walk along the shore...

Since this reunion is going to be near the beach, she's bringing "water shoes"...

Even though she's not going to lie out on the beach, she knows that a couple of pairs of shorts will be handy!

Once she got everything arranged and ready to pack, she gave it a last look:

She plans out enough outfits, in her ... View the Post

JULY 2019 - 12 MONTHS, 12 OUTFITS – A CAPSULE WARDROBE BASED ON 6 HERMES SCARVES

July 2019 – 12 Months, 12 Outfits – based on 6 Hermes Scarves

July 3, 2019

Ah, finally we have warm weather in Chicago, which makes these choices look logical!

This month, I fell warmly into the wonder of white shorts. I do not EVER get a tan, but I find that my legs tend to look reasonably good in white shorts. Don't ask me how that works - I'm not complaining! If shorts aren't your thing, anything that helps keep your legs cool will work: capris, or a swishy mid-calf skirt...

How did this wardrobe get this far without a black tee shirt????

This wardrobe has a range of shades of blue, but the core of black makes everything work pretty well...

As always, new additions to the wardrobe offer more than just 1 option. This should almost always be a rule when you buy something; ... View the Post

THE WEEKLY TIMELESS WARDROBE, WEEK 1: A LIGHT NEUTRAL TOP

The Weekly Timeless Wardrobe, Week 1: A Light Neutral Top

July 1, 2019

We could talk all day about why I'm starting with this particular garment, but I finally determined that I had to start somewhere, so this makes as much sense as any other!

If you're interested in buying a tee shirt like this, consider getting one in your dark neutral, as well as your accent color(s) at the same time. Lots of retailers have discounts on multiple purchases, or will have some sort of site-wide discount in the next few weeks. Get on the mailing list of your favorite tee shirt source, and strike while the price-cut iron is hot!

I want to make this really clear, right from the start: I'm NOT telling everybody to rush out and buy this particular tee shirt! I'm suggesting, rather, that you ... View the Post

Create a Travel Capsule Wardobe Inspired by Art: Ornamental Composition for Social Spaces #14 by Kamrooz Aram

Revisiting Art: Ornamental Composition for Social Spaces #14 by Kamrooz Aram

June 28, 2019

Last August, she pulled together a 4 by 4 Wardrobe based on her favorite wardrobe; she liked it so much, she thought that it would make a good base for a travel wardrobe too! Since the weather is warm, she's going to look for the lighter shades of her accent colors.

She's only going for a long weekend, so she knows that she doesn't want to pack a lot! And she recently bought herself a jacket and pants in her favorite green, so she knows that she wants to wear that while she's traveling...

She decides to be organized, and deliberate, in her packing.  She thought about what 6 items she would want to pack...

She knows that the smartest thing to do, when packing very few items, is to stick to a core of ... View the Post

CREATE A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY ART: SECOND SEASON WITH GREY FIREWORKS BY HELEN FRANKENTHALER

Remember our friend the political candidate? Of course she won her election...

She campaigned wearing a small wardrobe based on this painting, and color palette:

Now, she's getting ready for the legislative session in the fall! She's taking the train to the capitol on Tuesday mornings, and staying until until Friday afternoon... Trying to get familiar with the routine, and the policies, and the procedures. Even though the legislature isn't in session, there's plenty to do, and so MUCH to learn...

Since she had such luck with her wardrobe during the campaign, she decides to make only the slightest of changes to her wardrobe plan...

This scarf, in her travel outfit, is much more beautiful than you ... View the Post

12 ACCESSORY FAMILIES! THE PANTONE “NEW YORK” COLORS FOR AUTUMN 2019

12 Accessory Families! The Pantone “New York” Colors for Autumn 2019

I have no idea why they have multiple color groupings for autumn... Pantone does things their own way, no doubt!

I love these posts, but they take ages to do; just because Pantone thinks that these colors are going to be popular does NOT mean that they're easy to find. But in all fairness, these colors aren't just intended for clothing and accessories - they could be for automobiles, decor, restaurants - whatever...

Still, these are lots of fun, and would be a great way to bring some personality to a Weekly Timeless Wardrobe, wouldn't it?

This first color is closest to what I would indulge in:

This darker red might be lovely with brown, wouldn't it?

If you like beige or grey, this peach would be ... View the Post

10 WAYS TO WEAR A STRIPED SKIRT

National Stripes Day? 10 Ways to Wear a Striped Skirt

June 21, 2019

I honestly don't know if National Stripes Day is anything more than a made-up thing by J.Crew to sell more striped things, but the idea amuses me...

So I saw this skirt and saw both the potential and the challenges:

These colors are lovely, but they're certainly not easy to find in the world of clothing...

Just to make things interesting - and tough - I'm sticking with the general structure that I used for the last skirt for which I conjured 10 Ways to Wear...

In warm weather, a denim jacket might seem odd, but in the world of excessive air conditioning and unpredictable weather, it might make sense. Right now, in Chicago, it's plenty cool enough to wear it!

A simple tee shirt is always such an ... View the Post

She's Taking The Train... She's not sure how long she will be gone - maybe 2 weeks, probably longer...

She's going north. She doesn't now how far, or exactly to where, or for how long. She really will NOT be pinned down on this!

She's going to that city first, but from there... She's not moving on until she feels like she's ready to. I personally wouldn't be surprised to learn that she spends at least 2 weeks JUST in 1 city...

She's been saving money since... forever?Just for this summer...

If she doesn't see everything she wants to on this trip (and she knows that she can't possibly see everything!), she can go again next year...

Would you like to pack up and head out, without a clear ... View the Post

AN INTRODUCTION: 52 WEEKS, 52 GARMENTS, OR (AS I’M CALLING IT) THE WEEKLY TIMELESS WARDROBE

An Introduction: 52 Weeks, 52 Garments, or (as I’m calling it) the Weekly Timeless Wardrobe

June 17, 2019

After some mulling about, making lists, thinking and thinking some MORE, I think I'm ready to give this a go!

Starting the first Monday in July, I will, every Monday for a year, propose a garment which for most of us would qualify as a core wardrobe item. A staple. A classic...

Not all of these are going to apply to you; I suspect that many of us aren't going to want or need more than... 40? of these. But you might like all 52 - it will be an interesting process!

My system was to divide the year into 4 quarters of 13 weeks. Each quarter will include 13 garments that echo a 13-week "system" of pieces that looks like this...

These aren't going to be snazzy, eye-catching statement garments - this project is ... View the Post

They've rented their favorite cottage for the week of her birthday. They swear that they're going to take care of everything and that all she needs to do is relax and enjoy herself...

She's going to make getting dressed for the week as painless as possible, starting here!

Her color palette is going to be the simplest possible - positively foolproof!

She stands by her closet for a moment, and then quickly grabs four chambray garments. She loves her dress for those times when wants to feel "dressy" but in a casual way - nobody understands this but her! And her cropped pants and top match, so they look somewhat like a jumpsuit when worn together...

Most people might not pack a cashmere sweater for a ... View the Post

10 Ways to Wear a Floral Skirt

Chic Sightings: 10 Ways to Wear a Floral Skirt

June 12, 2019

A language digression: to me, something that is floral is MADE of flowers - a floral arrangement, a floral offering etc. Something printed with flowers is "flowered."

But NOT when you're searching through the world of garments and accessories.... If you want something with flowers, search for "floral."

I must be confused...

The first (and so far one of the only) really lovely early summer days here in Chicago brought out the floral skirts in abundance; I got so many ideas! So I picked a bright, unusual example:

I've been assured that the dark color here is navy; if it's black, nothing really changes here except navy garments and accessories could be swapped for black. I get really irked by the poor ... View the Post

June 10, 2019 Ride up With Me! "I'm going up to the beach house for the weekend - I'm going to drive, so you can just go with me!"

Her wardrobe palette is deeply invested in black, but for this weekend she eschewing the dark, and going straight-up pastels!

So she tossed her bag into the back seat...

She was expecting the air conditioning to be on full blast, so she pulled a shirt on over her tank top...

She doesn't expect to swim all that much, but she takes her suit along just in case! She does plan to walk along the beach a lot, so water shoes are definitely in the bag...

Generally, at least some people go out for a meal or two, or they go into town to buy groceries and browse around... She makes sure ... View the Post
