THE WEEKLY TIMELESS WARDROBE = GUIDE TO A GARDE-ROBE DU MOIS

The Weekly Timeless Wardrobe = Guide to a Garde-Robe du Mois

February 3, 2021

Yes, this is confusing...

But I'm trying to find a way to use the core 52 garments from The Weekly Timeless Wardrobe to help anyone who has to keep 2 separate wardrobes in 2 locations (or those of us who wear 2 completely different seasonal wardrobes as the weather comes and goes...)

Last week, I looked over the 52 garment list, and chose 10 to be the "core" wardrobe for this heroine. An example of one of the 10-piece wardrobes is this lovely grouping:

As useful and versatile as this wardrobe is, most women will want to add something to it! In order to stick to our plan, I went back to the list of 21 garments that remained AFTER I removed the 10 "core" pieces from the list. (and then split the list into warm ... View the Post

A GREAT BOOK, AND A FUN NEW WARDROBE IDEA!

A Great Book, and a Fun New Wardrobe Idea!

October 26, 2020

If you're not familiar with Fiona Ferris and her books, I strongly recommend that you click on the link below and get to know her!

She's lovely, wise and lady-like, with so much good advice it's amazing. I'm currently working my way through a workshop that she did on writing books, and I get to hear her talk her way through everything - her voice is charming, modulated to an elegant tone, with a New Zealand accent! What's not to love...

But what caught my eye right away in her new book was her idea about organizing a new capsule wardrobe each month to help focus, edit, and enjoy our wardrobes. Her target number is TWENTY-ONE!!!!

(I had to write to her immediately and ask permission to use her idea - and she ... View the Post

RESCUING A FORGOTTEN GARMENT: PRINT SLEEVELESS TUNIC

Rescuing a Forgotten Garment: Print Sleeveless Tunic

June 4, 2020

Today's interesting warning - if you're wearing a mask frequently, be ABSOLUTELY sure that you're washing both the mask(s) and your face every 5 minutes or so. I currently have a really painful broken-out face from mask irritation. It's both ugly and sore...

But let's look at helping one of our friends get some good use from a beautiful garment, eh?

This isn't the exact tunic, of course, but it's sleeveless, and includes the colors royal blue, black and white, just like our friend's tunic. So I'm hopeful that any advice I can think of will be useful!

With a little bit of thought, this top could be worn for most of the year - I know it's odd to think of wearing sleeveless things in cooler weather, but stick with ... View the Post

how to build a capsule wardrobe starting with an April birthstone bracelet

How to Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe by Starting with a Bracelet – April 2020

April 17, 2020

Happy Birthday to my amazing mother!

What a beautiful piece of work THIS is:

She Doesn't Think Anybody Noticed... But she's been pretty... slack... about getting ready to telecommute each day. So she's turning over a new leaf - out of bed, SHOWER, do NOT put the clothes back on that are on the floor beside the bed. Earrings. Maybe a dash of lipstick. She needs to look (and more importantly, FEEL) like she's working...

This is her inspiration:

Her sweetheart isn't working, so she creeps out of bed at the appropriate time, and gets dressed from clothes she's now stashing in the hall closet!

It doesn't much matter from the waist down what she wears, but anything that's going to show when she's ... View the Post

SOME “NOT QUITE PERFECT” WEEKLY TIMELESS WARDROBES, AND SOME FIXES

Some “Not Quite Perfect” Weekly Timeless Wardrobes, and Some Fixes

April 6, 2020

I'm going to take a break for a couple of weeks from the Weekly Timeless Wardrobe "1 garment per week," in order to let the lagging clothing markets catch up to the season!

But I do want to look back at some of the wardrobes from Spring that sort of evolved over the last 13 weeks, and see how they turned out...

I just opened ALL of the files of each post from the last 13 weeks, and accumulated the "example" garments I showed into 6 wardrobes. THIS was a laptop-killer...

First up - almost perfect...

You saw me do this last week in the last wardrobe - the one that sort of mirrors my own wardrobe. That red tee shirt is fine - you don't have to wear it with the pink top, or with the awesome madras dress. But the ... View the Post

THE WEEKLY TIMELESS WARDROBE, WEEK 38: A TWILL OR DENIM SKIRT

The Weekly Timeless Wardrobe, Week 38: A Twill or Denim Skirt

March 23, 2020

Let's all take advantage of having a lot of time indoors to really clean out our closets and be ready for those warm days ahead...

Keep in mind: we're allowed (encouraged?) to go outdoors and exercise, or just sit under a tree with a book. We're not forced to stay in our homes! So being ready for warmer weather and long walks might be a good focus right now.

I'm suggesting a skirt, but you know that if you absolutely HATE skirts, there are lots of other possibilities. I personally will probably substitute a simple sleeveless black dress...

Although it feels a little bit like a "spill magnet," a white skirt always looks so good in warm weather. And EVERYBODY looks at least a little bit tan wearing white, ... View the Post

ACCENT A NAVY AND GRAY WARDROBE WITH FIRE BRICK & PEACH NOUGAT

Accent a Navy and Gray wardrobe with Fire Brick & Peach Nougat

February 21, 2020

This next mix of colors is interesting - the brick, navy and grey could come together in a pretty conservative wardrobe, but the addition of the peach changes the whole feel of things!

Here's where I broke down and added a simple white top - I was struggling to find a really nice item in this color, and I just began to think that we might need a break from colors! Sometimes?

I kept the same navy clothes - partially just to show how versatile simple garments can be when you mix them with accessories and accent pieces! I changed the scarf though; I couldn't believe how hard it was to find a burgundy and navy scarf. This coming autumn, in the Men's Department... That's where they'll be!

And gray, or ... View the Post

FEBRUARY 2020 SIX SCARVES, TWELVE MONTHS, TWELVE OUTFITS

February 2020 Six Scarves, Twelve Months, Twelve Outfits

February 5, 2020

A new month!

I'm still quite smitten with this color palette; it's pretty classic, with the navy and camel, but the accent colors keep it from being too predictable:

I'm making a big change this year from the outfits that I included in previous years in February. I used to feel that this was a good time to include a dress - mostly because I'm a total Valentine's Day sap. But I'm going to try to be a LOT more strategic in my choices this year, and to me that means another sweater, another pair of pants, and another shirt. It makes a lot of sense when you see the January and February outfits on the same page.

I could NOT resist this shirt. I feel like it was made for this color palette...

Here's ... View the Post

JANUARY 2020 SIX SCARVES, TWELVE MONTHS, TWELVE OUTFITS

January 2020 Six Scarves, Twelve Months, Twelve Outfits

January 1, 2020

I finally made my scarf choices - holy handbags of happiness, THIS was a project!

But here they are - I'll explain my choices after you've had a chance to look them over...

All but 1 is from Aspinal of London. I love Hermes scarves - but these from Aspinal cost 36% of what an Hermes scarf costs! That's a big thing for most of us, I imagine.

First up, I knew I had to include this scarf. This will be the "navy-centric" wardrobe, including that lion beige/camel color as the 2nd neutral. I suspect that there will be some rust accents in this wardrobe before the end of 2020, as well as a simple white shirt or tee shirt...

All of the outfits for this month are basic, as befits the start of a disciplined new ... View the Post

WHAT DOES A WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE LOOK LIKE? 3 IDEAS, STARTING WITH ART!

What Does a Winter Capsule Wardrobe Look Like? 3 Ideas, Starting with Art!

December 30, 2019

Ah, before we dive in, I have a few observations that I want to share:

Winter clothes are flying out of store - it wasn't at all easy to find these garments for these wardrobes! If you need something, start looking now. L.L.Bean still has a full assortment of sweaters and warm pants, but most other places are running out of sizes/colors even as I type. NOW I remember why I started this project before the season had even really started! By the same token, if you need specific things for warmer weather, be prepared to start looking by the end of January. It's weird, but it's the way the retail world seems to want us to shop... Lots of garments are currently sporting a "puffy sleeve" thing - especially at the ... View the Post

ANALYZING 2 WARDROBES: WHEN YOUR COLOR PALETTE IS CHALLENGING

Analyzing 2 Wardrobes: When Your Color Palette is Challenging

December 20, 2019

The last two wardrobes! These were the most difficult - no question. And I made a couple of early strategic mistakes that I would re-do...

First up, this excellent scarf!

I should NOT have tried to make white one of the neutral colors. White as a neutral really only works well if you live in a hot place and don't mind laundry...

A smarter move would have been to use brown and navy as "co-neutrals" and then white, red, turquoise and orange as accents. This would still have been a big stack of colors with which to work, but it might have been a better balance. It's always easy to look back and say what I might have done differently, isn't it?

I went off the rails in a big way in February - I had designated ... View the Post

ANALYZING 2 WARDROBES: TOO FEW COLORS? OR TOO MANY?

Analyzing 2 Wardrobes: Too Few Colors? Or Too Many?

December 18, 2019

Update on next year's scarf choices: I ordered an Aspinal of London scarf, to see how the quality is. That will be pretty key! I'm sort of thinking, right now, that I might work with a combination of brands. My goal is, as always, to do a wardrobe in each of 6 neutrals: black, navy, grey, beige/tan/camel, brown, and olive. I will keep you posted!

Next up, 2 wardrobe that are both quite good, but feel like they could benefit from better color choices. Or maybe not; it IS possible to over-analyze things to the point of being too critical, and finding flaws that don't exist. This isn't the most important thing in the world, we must remember!

First up, this color palette that worried me, but that is really quite ... View the Post
