A French 5-Piece Wardrobe in Blooming Dahlia

February 28, 2018

Maybe black and white isn't your thing... maybe now that warm weather is approaching, you're in the mood for LIGHT...

And maybe you're very casual. Not a scarf person. Really, VERY casual, relaxed, leisurely...

Maybe start with this:

You've got every kind of white top from sleeveless to long-sleeved, and everything to cover your legs a little, a bit more, or all the way! Layer on a sweater or a sweatshirt and you're good to go.

This is NOT boring.... this is subtle!

You're ready for an update, and a bit of an accent color for the upcoming warm weather. But nothing overly dressy - why buy things you won't wear? You can update just as easily with canvas shoes, tee shirts, and a fresh ... View the Post

A French 5-Piece Wardrobe in Tomato Red

February 27, 2018 When the weather gets warm, many of us get the urge to shop! And so let's think about limiting our purchases to whatever essential, core items we need, and then a French 5-Piece Wardrobe to freshen and update our classics...First, every change of season has me dreaming of tossing out all of my clothes and buying an entirely new wardrobe from Eileen Fisher. (NOT going to happen, but a woman can fantasize, and then use that fantasy to create a better reality, right?)This is what I'd be buying, if I was going to do such a madcap thing:

Of course, when you look at this wardrobe for a few minutes, you realize that you don't need to buy ALL 10 pieces to get the desired effect - maybe just 2 or 3 of the real signature ... View the Post

Daffodils – the Birth Flower for March! How perfect…

After watching the Six Nations rugby yesterday, and seeing daffodil hats, and lots of daffodils pinned to coats, it seemed only perfect that today we look at them as the March birth flower...(Daffodil Days are a Cancer Society fund-raiser...)

For many of us, yellow feels like an inherently difficult color, but never discount the impact (and the fun!) that you could have with a yellow pedicure, or yellow sandals... but you can always wear the image of the daffodil in silver - no worries about unflattering yellow!

And I'm convinced that the flower in the middle of that very bright scarf is a narcissus...

Disclaimer - Yes, I'm using the same pants and shoes for most of these outfits. This is NOT because I'm bone-deep lazy (although ... View the Post

I’m taking a “health day,” but I still have something to share….

Revisiting the Red Tulip Scarf, and some Unpredictable Navy

February 22, 2018 You might remember a travel capsule wardrobe for a brave (some might say daring) heroine a couple of months ago...This was her inspirational scarf, her style guidelines, and her color palette:

A Conference, Alone.... After the lecture that she attended before the holidays, she joined a group that did a lot of research in the subject that she found so fascinating. So now, they're getting together for a weekend conference to discuss their finding and their next steps. She's VERY excited...

It's just a couple of days, so she won't need a lot of things. Mostly they'll be sitting around a conference table talking, taking notes and sharing ideas... There's 1 nice dinner planned, and as usual she's going to take ... View the Post

Adding Just Enough Accessories

February 21, 2018   Yesterday she managed to wrestle her wardrobe into shape, so today she want to be certain that she has enough accessories. She's not mad about having tons of stuff, but it is pretty important to have at least some appropriate shoes! Her color palette looked like this when she was finished:

She thought for a bit, and chose gold as the metal color for her jewelry (maybe just for this season - who knows?)

And she's going to rely a bit on navy as a "cooling" influence on her wardrobe, as she moves away from those warm olive-ish greens that made her feel drab. So she drafted a 2nd color palette, like this:

Now that her colors are all settled, she things for a minute about what she's going to look for in ... View the Post

Another Wardrobe Disaster…

February 20, 2018

This is almost the same wardrobe that we saw back on February 7th; I've made a couple of changes so that our new "dilemma" is clear...

This is her starting wardrobe; there's nothing really WRONG here - they're all perfectly nice clothes, but she struggles, and often feels that she doesn't look... pretty...

So she goes through the same exercise that we've seen before - does she have the right general assortment of pieces? Yes, this seems fine...

Is it the colors? She feels in her gut that she's got a color "issue..." She's always been told that she was an Autumn, but the colors feel muddy and heavy to her... She's got blue eyes, and freckles, and she feels more... light? than the colors that are ... View the Post

The Most Popular Post on The Vivienne Files (so far!)

I am surprised that this was this most visited post - I suspect that Google's statistics aren't always reflective of the real world!

But this is still a really interesting post, based on information from an old (and very popular) fashion book called Hot Tips...

I was heartened to see that all of the outfits I suggested would still be perfectly appropriate and undated... that's my goal!

For what it's worth, I am just now starting to mend from the flu, so I can't guarantee that there will be posts every day on The Vivienne Files. I'll do my best, but I can assure you that flu + fibromyalgia = a long recovery...

My 2nd Most Popular Post – Project 333 for Warmer Weather – Shifting Basics

For a couple of years when I still had an office job, I tried to participate in Project 333 - wearing a 33-piece capsule wardrobe exclusive for at least a month. This post shows how I was trying to migrate certain pieces out of my capsule wardrobe, and what I would substitute as the weather warmed up...

The general thesis behind this idea holds true for any garment in which you seem to live... If you wear jeans constantly in the autumn and winter, maybe you could consider denim capris, or shorts, or maybe chambray pants for warmer weather? The same garment, in terms of color and cut, but lightened up...

Should I look into these "substitutions" more in the future? Let me know!

(And yes, planning for warmer weather right now feels ... View the Post

My 3rd Most Popular Post – This is Why I Blog

February 15, 2018

I'm so happy that this post is so high on this list - I really did start writing The Vivienne Files in order to encourage women to buy less clothing, and to spend a little bit of time listening to their hearts, and less time listening to advertising. Nobody else knows what you want or need, and don't let them tell you otherwise!

The image shown, from 4 years ago, is so easily replicable today; I don't still have the original grey dress, but everything else there is still with me, and still in my regular rotation. That makes me feel like I'm not destroying my budget, nor my planet...

Here's an updated version:

If you choose simple, classic pieces, and use a little bit of imagination, you don't need a ton of ... View the Post

My 4th Most Popular Post – How to Wear a Petrol (or Slate) Blue Cardigan

February 14, 2018

Not too long after I started The Vivienne Files, I began to receive a lot of emails from people who owned specific garments that they struggled to integrate into their wardrobe. Thus, I wrote a lengthy series of posts about "How to Wear....". This one was the most popular, which is interesting, albeit inexplicable to me!

And yes, the original cardigan wasn't really either slate nor petrol; finding beautiful, subtle colors is difficult, and becoming harder all the time! If you really want to own a garment in a richly well-dyed color, you will have to search, and probably pay more than the price of a take-out lunch...

The advice in this post about how to look at your "orphan" garment and find it a home is ... View the Post

My 5th Most Popular Post – Build a Capsule Wardrobe from Scratch: Choosing Colors

It doesn't surprise me that this post was high up on the list of all-time favorites - it's a perennial topic for The Vivienne Files!

Remember 3 and a half years ago, when I built SIX separate wardrobes, from scratch? This was the first post of that series...

While these aren't the most creative or unexpected color palettes imaginable, they are certainly timelessly classic, which is a pretty good thing!

I have to admit, after all this time, and after looking at all of the colors with which we've worked, I still love black and white with just a touch of red or bright blue... I'm old-school!
