Uncertain Weather on Your Long Weekend Start With Art - Study for Spring Madonna by Mainie Jellett

Uncertain Weather on Your Long Weekend? Start With Art – Study for Spring Madonna by Mainie Jellett

May 7, 2025

A favorite artist featured at the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin? She's on the train for a weekend visit!

She's studied this painting SO MUCH - she knows the colors by heart:

Ireland's been having record warm weather recently, but this heroine is far too wise to fall for THAT! She's making certain to have a jacket and warm shoes; she doesn't have to wear these things again on her trip, but she's certainly not traveling without them.

A dress and three very summery tops, but a pair of "real" pants, and a cardigan - this give her options for unpredictable weather. And her olive jacket will look great with her stone chinos and ivory sweaters...

The night before she leaves, she takes a look at ... View the Post

The Third of Six Paintings-Twelve Months, March 2025

The Third of Six Paintings-Twelve Months, March 2025

March 5, 2025

Big news - my dear friend Scottie is having a sale on her scarves! Get thee to her website right now to see the possibilities!

A lovely, if deeply enigmatic, painting:

That wee geometric thingy on the breast of the white swan... Hmm...

At the end of February, this heroine had a pretty and very useful wardrobe:

This heroine decided to really emphasize spring clothes this month! Maybe she wears a size that's hard to find, or maybe she's been burned in the past by having things sell out that she really liked! And she decided to break out with a pure white top - she's not afraid of wearing white with ivory...

Her new additions make a big difference this month! Adding a pair of pants that aren't dark ... View the Post

Denim and Ivory: Three 13-Piece Travel Capsule Wardrobes

Denim and Ivory: Three 13-Piece Travel Capsule Wardrobes

September 20, 2024

I can't believe that September is 2/3 over! You'd think I wasn't awake every day...

Our heroine has looked at her wardrobe with cores of denim and black, and then with cores of denim and brown. Today, we're going to see how EVERYBODY'S favorite of denim and ivory looks...

This is our heroine's starting point - 27 garments in three "neutral" clusters, and then three "accent" clusters.

First, let's take a last look at her hard-working core of denim garments, with yet ANOTHER group of accessories. Wearing things every week is the fastest way to get your "cost per wear" for garments down; you can buy exceptionally nice clothes and still get good value if you wear things consistently!

The ivory ... View the Post

Need a Foolproof Travel Capsule Wardrobe? Start With a Scarf – the Kendra Scott scarf by Echo

Need a Foolproof Travel Capsule Wardrobe? Start With a Scarf – the Kendra Scott scarf by Echo

August 12, 2024

For a heroine who loves ivory and shades of brown, who loves turquoise and coral accessories, who wants to just pack four outfits and then not think too much about clothes...

For autumn travel, she immediately sees her color palette:

She will probably travel in this outfit - these are the darkest pants that she's taking with her, so it might be a good idea!

She doesn't have much turquoise clothing, but for travel, she doesn't need more than just a sweater that goes with everything:

Her vacation isn't going to be particularly dressy, but she's not going to want blue jeans... IVORY jeans, on the other hand, might be just right!

They don't have any very formal plans, but a casual skirt ... View the Post

How Can I Wear My New Scarf Elizabeth Olwen Scarf by Echo

How Can I Wear My New Scarf? Elizabeth Olwen Scarf by Echo

March 11, 2024

Sometimes, you just know that you want a scarf! (and I suspect that this one will sell our really quickly!)

Such a great design! Lovely colors! Brown and ivory neutrals...

Let's work our way through some accent color possibilities... Starting with red! This scarf would be a nice touch as a belt? Or over the striped top - why not?

Imagine this scarf around your head, or on the handle of your bag, on a hot day...

Maybe you need something to brighten the world up a bit on a cool day...

Feel like your simple blue and bone outfit needs a spark?

Casual and simple doesn't have to be boring:

Maybe you just want to stick with a simple brown and ecru outfit, and put the emphasis on ... View the Post

Two Wardrobe Neutrals with an Accent Start with Art - January by Elizabeth Magill

Two Wardrobe Neutrals with an Accent? Start with Art – January by Elizabeth Magill

February 12, 2024

I'm getting to be a big fan of Elizabeth Magill - her paintings are deep, and rich with color...

If only I'd found this one last month, eh? But it fits nicely with our theme of clusters in neutrals, accompanied by a sizeable dash of an accent!

This could be a lifetime wardrobe - everything from white to ivory to a soft grey, and a sizeable range of subtle blues. I even see some purple in there!

I'm going to start with the first ivory/cream wardrobe cluster that we saw - the one with the dressier pants, and the skirt. I see this heroine as having a wide range of activities planned, with the need to dress "nicely" from time to time...

Next, her second neutral - a little less dressy, but one could ... View the Post

Are You REALLY Committed to an Accent Color Start with Art - White Herons and Willow by Ohara Koson

Are You REALLY Committed to an Accent Color? Start with Art – White Herons and Willow by Ohara Koson

February 7, 2024

Her name is Lily...

And aptly enough, she's always really loved green, and beautiful paintings that feature lots of green.

So when it came time to really update her spring wardrobe, she had an inspiration:

Why NOT really invest in some green things, and wear them often? It's not an approach that suits everyone, but when she thinks of it (and factors in her soft, muted green eyes), it seems a good idea!

So she starts with a lovely neutral ivory. Or ecru. Or bone. Of off-white. She has to be flexible when looking for these colors...

Oh what fun!

She quickly realizes that it might be too early in the season to find a lot of bright, leafy green... but then she stumbles onto the absolute ... View the Post

Experimenting with Proportions by Starting with Art Partial Eclipse of the Moon by Étienne Léopold Trouvelot

Experimenting with Proportions by Starting with Art: Partial Eclipse of the Moon by Étienne Léopold Trouvelot

September 11, 2023

She likes things to be simple, but interesting... Anything for a good experiment!

So when she was told that she would have 2 weeks access to the data regarding the varying distances to the moon, she knew that she packing would be a chance to try out some interesting things!

There will be at least a dozen other scientists at the University, working toward an accurate measurement of the vacillations of the earth's axis. It's fascinating, really!

While she's concentrating on numbers, and distances, and appearances, she decides that she will pack a 3-color wardrobe, and experiment with how she gets dressed each day. She's hopeful that she will arrive at a firm conclusion about what "outfit proportions" ... View the Post

Travel Capsule Wardrobe in Navy & Ivory with pastels: Evening in the Pink Sky by André Brasilier Start with Art

July 14, 2023

She's the Only One... Well, the only one she knows! When someone wants to purchase a painting - or paintings - that include horses, she's the expert...

She's off for a few days to visit a new race course; they want the Private Lounge to have a modern, but still equestrian, feel...

She's going to try to encourage them to buy some more modern art; she's not at ALL sure that she will be successful!

Her approach is going to be relaxed, and she will try to emphasize that these paintings aren't at ALL edgy. Many of them are over 100 years old - that's not exactly cutting edge!

She knows of a number of racing facilities in Europe that have included VERY modern art in their décor; sometimes that's ... View the Post

A Travel Capsule Wardrobe in Black, Brown, Green and Ivory Start with Art - The Flower Arranger by Mary Brandish Titcomb

A Travel Capsule Wardrobe in Black, Brown, Green and Ivory: Start with Art – The Flower Arranger by Mary Brandish Titcomb

July 12, 2023

She loves this painting - it's what she does, in a way...

So when she travels - which is often - she uses these colors as her palette for assembling her travel capsule wardrobe:

Another Gala Opening Night She designs the flowers that lurk around on all of the occasional tables, grace all of the dining tables, and fill in the odd spaces around the museum...

She doesn't actually arrange the flowers - the local florists take care of that...

But she has spent the last 2 or 3 months designing the arrangements - making sure to use flowers and plants that are in some way symbolically associated with the theme of the current fete...

For example - her current work is at an exhibit of Grecian art, ... View the Post

Travel Capsule Wardrobe for Eloping! Start with a Scarf Oopsie Daisy by Clare Haggas

Travel Capsule Wardrobe for Eloping! Start with a Scarf: Oopsie Daisy by Clare Haggas

June 26, 2023

She couldn't resist; she didn't even try!

Let's Just Elope... Really, it's SO much easier, and nobody in either of their families is going to mind. Their friends expect this kind of spontaneous fun from them...

They aren't going ALL that far, really. Not that it matters; she's going to wear pink - even if they have to row a wee boat for 3 days!

Packing is tricky - she's not at ALL sure what she wants to wear for the actual ceremony! Of course, it will only be about 10 minutes, and she's not going to be on the cover of any magazines. But still, it's their wedding!

Maybe the dress? Or one of her lovely tops with her ivory skirt? She can decide when she gets there - maybe they can choose together?

Start with Art A Travel Capsule Wardrobe based on Two Geese in the Snow by Komori Soseki

Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe by Starting with Art: Two Geese in the Snow by Komori Soseki

January 25, 2023

Plenty of Firewood... She agreed to go up to the cabin for the weekend, with the understanding that (1) they would stop at the deli on the way out of town and get enough food, (2) there is enough firewood up there for at least 5 days, and (3) there are NO chores for her to handle!

Oh yes, and there are birds about...

In all fairness, she has 2 books she really NEEDS to finish in the next few days (for work!), so it's not all just hanging about reading gossip magazines...

She will, of course, walk outdoors from time to time, to catch some sun (if it's out!), visit with any animals that are about, and take a break from her work.

In addition to using a favorite painting as her inspiration, ... View the Post
