A Pink & Brown Checked Suit - Is It Worth It

A Pink & Brown Checked Suit – Is It Worth It?

August 26, 2026

One last suit, and WHAT a suit it is! The pants are 7/8 length, so your shoes get some attention, and the jacket is a snappy somewhat short style... The Boden site shows this suit worn with nothing underneath the jacket - would you do that?

You really have to get a close-up of the fabric to see what colors are here - I could have chosen a shade of rust, but I opted for the red that Boden was showing with these pieces.

Frankly, I think having the suit in your hands would be helpful before you started doing a lot of "outfit building" with this jacket and pants!

yes, I'm re-using quite a few things in this post  - this is deliberate, and not just bone-deep laziness on my part! Good, classic items can be ... View the Post

Is a Navy Suit REALLY Useful

Is a Navy Suit REALLY Useful?

August 24, 2026

Ah, some of you still need to dress conservatively... And there's a lot of struggle around the wisdom of owning a good navy suit.

If you don't like wearing navy, DON'T DO IT! But if you like wearing navy, and you're comfortable in a blazer, and you can envision needing a classic suit, you could do worse than this:

What can you do with such classic beauty? Well, let's start with a very conservative color palette and see what's possible!

I'm going to approach this the same way I looked at the striped suit on Friday - a half-dozen outfits, a few additions, and then another half-dozen "remixed" outfits from the 16 garments in our capsule wardrobe.

Let's start casual:

The wine shade that I'm ... View the Post

Accessories! Bringing Life to the Rising Green by Lee Krasner 4 by 4 Wardrobe

Accessories! Bringing Life to the Rising Green by Lee Krasner 4 by 4 Wardrobe

July 31, 2026

It's the end of July. I'm not quite ready for the end of summer, are you?

You may remember our friend who has an upcoming responsibility to be an election observer. This will be - of course - in November. She doesn't know how long she will be gone; she's been told it could be for 5 days to 2 weeks. Happily, she WILL be in a place where laundry will be possible!

She's decided to use this most lovely painting to inspire her travel capsule wardrobe:

This is the wardrobe that she's packing - I have a hunch that she's been told that it might be warm some of the time she's at her assigned destination? Weather is one of the things that can make it almost impossible to plan a wardrobe more than a day or two before ... View the Post

Back to the Casual Office this Fall? Start With Art: Cityscape by Alice Neel

July 27, 2026

The email was not unexpected, but she still wasn't thrilled to read it - everybody should be IN THE OFFICE three days a week, starting at the beginning of September...

She hasn't been in the office on a regular basis in years. Literally.

So she's going to plan a small work wardrobe that will see her through three days a week without a lot of thinking. Just making the trip back and forth is going to be quite enough additional effort!

She's got green eyes, lots of freckles, dark reddish brown hair, and a fondness for autumn colors. Her inspiration is going to be this:

Unlike so many other wardrobe plans, this one's starting with accent colors! When our heroine found both burgundy (that delightful Fig color ... View the Post

Start with Art – Tulips by Susan Jane Walp

July 24, 2026

She has room in her bedroom to hang 16 garments. Well, maybe 20, but certainly not more than that! Her clothes live in an ante-room off the main part of the attic. Old houses...

Her plan for the upcoming cool weather is to build a 4 by 4 Wardrobe of casual clothes; she wears a uniform for work, so this is the majority of what she will need for her personal life.

She wants this mix of colors:

She chose her color palette partly because she already has quite a few garments in these colors! One should always start a wardrobe (travel, seasonal, stress-dressing) with clothes you already have and like!

Our heroine is going to use the 4 by 4 Wardrobe Template to keep herself organized; it's easy to grab a ... View the Post

A “Formula” Color Palette Starting with Navy, and Starting With Art!

July 20, 2026

I used this painting here on The Vivienne Files back in April of 2020. Doesn't that seem like a century ago?

This color palette comes up at a great time - one among you is going to be an election observer in a town A LONG WAY FROM HOME. And it's expected that she will have to be there for anything from 5 to 14 days. Sounds fun, eh?

But to be practical, she wants to avoid both bright blue and bright red clothes, she doesn't want to be TOO dressy, but she wants to be able to dress up if it is necessary.

I always start a travel wardrobe with a cluster of clothing that could be worn (along with a travel outfit) in a lot of different ways. In theory, one could survive a trip with 8 or 9 garments, presuming that some ... View the Post

Can There Be a Template for Wardrobe Color Schemes?

July 20, 2026

I should be in Dublin when you read this. Yes. Back to Europe. Sometimes my plans aren't the most efficient, or the most restful. But packing repeatedly makes me think of planning, and being organized...

Just over two years ago, I introduced you to this painting and this palette. I think it's safe to say that for at least the current while, this is my signature palette:

I've been thinking for a while that pretty much any wardrobe could "come together" around a color palette that included two neutrals, two accents and denim. (your definition of neutral and accent is up to you - if pink and purple are your neutrals, I'm not going to tell you it's wrong!)

So I put denim blue at the base, literally, of this graph, ... View the Post

Inspiration is Everywhere! Navy, White, Rose Pink and Deep Lake Blue

Inspiration is Everywhere! Navy, White, Rose Pink and Deep Lake Blue

April 17, 2026

Our heroine was off to a good start - she was certain that navy is her favorite neutral, and she was equally convinced that white would be her light neutral. That's a LOT more progress than many of us ever make in gaining control of our wardrobe!

She started here - her favorite outfit(s):

So she started building her Spring wardrobe by digging into her closet and dresser, and found all of these things:

At this point, she realizes that her choice of navy and white is really solidly based on her preferences... But what about accent colors?

She looks at art.

She looks at nature.

She looks at brilliant wardrobe blogs...

And THEN, she sits down to watch some European rugby with her best friend, and ... View the Post

Ready for Spring? Start With Art – Costal Image by Theo van Rysselberghe

March 20, 2026

I had hoped to see this painting at The National Gallery in London, but I understand that it's not currently on display. I'm sure I'll find something else that appeals...

With warmer weather approaching (although we had HAIL last night...) I thought that this felt just right:

Yes, we started with this heroine six years ago, at the beginning of pandemic work from home... I did NOT look back at her original wardrobe when I started this; it's interesting that yet again, I chose to work with wardrobe clusters!

Our heroine is still working from home most of the time. They're expected to be in their office four days a month - generally everybody shows up on Thursday because they bring lunch in for everyone. If you ... View the Post

NEED A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE START WITH A SCARF – THE TRACY O’NEILL SILK SCARF BY ECHO

Need a Travel Capsule Wardrobe? Start with a Scarf – the Tracy O’Neill silk scarf by Echo

June 17, 2024

I love this scarf - I need another scarf like I need a bad headache, but a silk bandana? With wee ducks all around the edge? Be still by beating heart...

"It Will Be Cool in Paris in October..." And she's going to be there for at least two weeks! She's going to be tutoring English students in perfecting their accents - how fun is that? If things go well, she could be there are long as six weeks! Was there ever a better motivation for doing your best work?

She's keeping it simple:

She's going to have a place to stay - a VERY TINY place to stay, she's been warned. They were particularly specific about letting her know that she shouldn't bring much luggage, which is true of so many trips we make in life!

Her ... View the Post

Do You Love Blue? Adding Accessories to a Start with Art Wardrobe – Blue on White, White on Blue by Paolo Quaresima

January 24, 2024

You thought that I forgot! Yes, I can get pretty immersed in those Echo 100 scarves, but there's no way I was going to miss revisiting this painting:

This heroine is going to look at each of her "wardrobe clusters" one at a time, and make certain that she has the accessories that she wants for each cluster...

She's already got her shoes chosen - that's a lot of the thinking out of the way already!

First up, her warmest cluster. There are at least four outfits possible here, if she layers her navy shirt under her navy sweater... If you're summering in a place where evenings can turn cool, this could happen!

And for what it's worth, we have cool summer days in Chicago! The sellers of souvenir ... View the Post

Need a Wardrobe Plan for Summer Start with Art - Blue on White, White on Blue by Paolo Quaresima

Need a Wardrobe Plan for Summer? Start with Art – Blue on White, White on Blue by Paolo Quaresima

January 17, 2024

Since the temperature here is a whopping THREE DEGREES Fahrenheit, let's help a heroine who is planning her summer wardrobe!

We're going to try something kind of new - assembling a 4 by 4 Wardrobe by choosing four 4-piece clusters! Each cluster will give her at least 2 outfits, and all of the clusters will be able to work together. This is a good approach if she wants to shop (or closet-shop!) gradually, and if she's finding that clothes in her favorite colors are proving hard to find...

She wants navy, she wants white, and she wants accents of bright blue - maybe this painting is a good starting place:

One thing I've been assured - our heroine doesn't like white leather goods! I can understand that; ... View the Post
