She has room in her bedroom to hang 16 garments. Well, maybe 20, but certainly not more than that! Her clothes live in an ante-room off the main part of the attic. Old houses…
Her plan for the upcoming cool weather is to build a 4 by 4 Wardrobe of casual clothes; she wears a uniform for work, so this is the majority of what she will need for her personal life.
She wants this mix of colors:
She chose her color palette partly because she already has quite a few garments in these colors! One should always start a wardrobe (travel, seasonal, stress-dressing) with clothes you already have and like!

Our heroine is going to use the 4 by 4 Wardrobe Template to keep herself organized; it’s easy to grab a 16-piece wardrobe of 14 sweaters, a chambray shirt and a pair of jeans… Easy, but not tremendously versatile!
Our heroine plans to spend a great deal of her free time at home – indoors or in her back yard, mostly. Trips to the grocery, or walks around the neighborhood, are also on her agenda. But it’s all quite relaxed…

I love how our two accent colors are similar – shades of red – but how they’re VERY different!

I’m sure everyone here could assemble a dozen outfits from this pretty easily, eh?
I could see this idea being very useful if you have a couple of garments that you’re just not SURE you want to keep. Build a solid, versatile 4 by 4 Wardrobe including those pieces, and then wear ONLY that for a couple of weeks.
If you don’t pull out a garment from your closet when you only have 16 pieces TOTAL in that closet, then maybe it’s time to find a better home for said item. This does NOT, of course, mean tossing in the garbage…

Practical and casual. Excellent! This is actually pretty much what I wear. And, yes, even though it’s sweltering now, my thoughts are turning to fall clothes. I like the cheery accent colors! Great for a walk on a brisk fall day! Maybe accessories?
Also…. Perhaps a barn jacket, walking shoes with good arch support and a hand knit scarf…😀
Janice, I think you have magic vision or a secret camera in my just-reorganised wardrobe, as these are my colours, and I love the coherence of what you’ve done with them here.
I agree with Sandy: add a few accessories – boots, jacket, scarves, gloves – and this heroine is set for the autumn, despite the fact that we in the UK are in our fifth heatwave of the summer! I am loving the sunshine, but the thought of autumn is very calming :-)

I love these colors! And thank you for including denim! I can imagine our heroine wearing scrubs too…perhaps she’s a nurse or a doctor? Given that my daughter (a geneticist) and her fiance (an immunologist) wear scrubs at work, their off duty clothes in Boston are of the best quality and in their own palettes. One thing I will suggest is something to wear out to dinner, to a party or a concert….trust me, those who wear a uniform to work like to enjoy their ‘freedom’ clothes with jeuje for being off duty. But, I think these are great colors for casual wear!
As I began packing this morning, for a special long weekend to celebrate my mom’s 90th and my daughter’s bridal shower, I truly imagined your wardrobe guides! Honestly, you helped me pack.

What can be substituted for the soft beige, winter white pants? Not feasible in the real world with pets and the stay at home Vivienne Files scenario. I view off white or winter white as too dressy for home and everyday wear. I don’t expect a response on this, here in the United States.
I believe that there are pants available in the fig color from L.L.Bean.

I, too, am beset by muddy paw prints and also plenty of cat fur. Lately since trying o retire and moving clients to Zoom meetings, I’ve been dividing my clothes into 3 categories: less sloppy clothes for at home (nice sweats and everything washable; errands, shopping, library, and dog walking (nicer pants, sweaters, shirts); and the very few occasions to be more dressed, like concerts, eating out, classes, and wine tastings. That’s in order of how much I need, so I ask myself where a new purchase will fit in. This wardrobe is quite apropos for my first 2 categories (mostly the first two).

What A breath of fresh air!! I’ve received some sad news today and this post soothed my tattered soul. LOVE the art and these colors are favorites of mine. Thank you for pointing us to the fig color and the sale jeans at Lands End!
I like this way of thinking since almost everyone owns one or more go-to denim/chambray pieces. Figuring out how to incorporate those pieces into a capsule wardrobe (when, like me, the color palette contains warm colors) is just smart and logical.
I love this for a stay at home retiree Fall wardrobe. I wear sweats when I am at home and jeans or stretchy knit pants when i go out to Dr. appts. and things like that. I have a pair of LLBean perfect knit pants, I think they are called, and I love them. I like the color palette as it has a bit of the unexpected pops of color. I would love to see you revisit this heroine in the other seasons.
I really like this color palette and the easy casual vibe. I would personally substitute a more muted coral for the red-orange option (which is wonderfully vibrant and truer to the painting than my choice but doesn’t wear as well on me).
I understand the versatility value of a button up shirt since it can be worn alone, with a layer under, or with a layer over…but man, I just cannot do a button up layered under something else for casual wear! I have done it occasionally for more dressed up things like work, but for day to day casual life, I would 100% substitute comfortable t-shirt knit type tops for layering under a cardigan, pullover sweater, or sweatshirt. (I actually have some tops that I wear solely for layering under a pullover sweater or sweatshirts because I like the lower layer to be more fitted and I treat that as closer to an undergarment layer than a regular layer. As you see, I have *preferences*.) Of course, that means you don’t get the “collar peeking out from the sweater/sweatshirt” detail to the outfit, but all the easier to layer on a scarf, I say (and yes, I would happily wear a super casual fall outfit with a scarf!).
It’s interesting…I can’t tell if I’m just more persnickety about this issue than most people or what, but I do often look at the suggested outfits from small capsules on this blog and wonder whether the pieces would actually layer well together. As I look at these outfits, I think they absolutely make sense theoretically, but I would not wear any of the button up shirts under another layer, nor would I expect the ivory button up shirt layered over the burgundy or olive t-shirts to look right (might depend on how sheer it is and how much the darker color comes through). The denim shirt would probably layer well over the olive T, but I would not choose double (blue) denim.
