One last suit, and WHAT a suit it is! The pants are 7/8 length, so your shoes get some attention, and the jacket is a snappy somewhat short style… The Boden site shows this suit worn with nothing underneath the jacket – would you do that?
You really have to get a close-up of the fabric to see what colors are here – I could have chosen a shade of rust, but I opted for the red that Boden was showing with these pieces.
Frankly, I think having the suit in your hands would be helpful before you started doing a lot of “outfit building” with this jacket and pants!
yes, I’m re-using quite a few things in this post – this is deliberate, and not just bone-deep laziness on my part! Good, classic items can be used in a variety of ways, for years and years…

Yes, you absolutely can wear a striped tee with houndstooth pants! The brown cardigan over the tee will provide a moderating note, but it wouldn’t be necessary if the weather warms up!
And if you’re going to buy a suit that emphasizes pink, I think leaning into LOTS of pink is a good way to start:

I keep sharing this silk blouse. It’s not cheap, but I have the ivory version, and I’m tempted to get the black one too! It’s really nice quality, and makes everything else you’re wearing just a touch more dressy and elegant.
And the cardigan looks perfect…
I believe that these may be the first mules I’ve ever shown on The Vivienne Files! With these slightly cropped pants, I felt like they would be just right.

What would I add onto this wardrobe at this stage? MORE BROWN!!! A beautiful lacy knit sweater, a lovely leather skirt (talk about something you buy once and keep for the rest of your life…), and the same red tee shirt we’ve seen before.
And a scarf. A winsome, witty and perfectly-colored scarf!
When assembled on the bed, before packing, this wardrobe looks amazing – unlike any travel capsule wardrobe I’ve done before! I could see packing this for any trip over a week or 10 days, for any number of destinations. You would NEVER fade into the crowd with these clothes.
Conversely, if you only have to dress like an adult a couple of days a week, this could BE your entire fall wardrobe:
In a 4 by 4 Wardrobe template, these clothes fit quite well. I cheated and included the pink wool scarf, because it could qualify as a third “piece” over a top and bottom.
Or you could find a lovely brown blouse – maybe a floral in pink and brown? I couldn’t find one, but I’m sure it’s out there…
It’s a rhetorical question – can our heroine wear these clothes in different combinations from those that we’ve seen?
If she can’t, she needs to start over. Versatile, multi-use garments are the key to a good capsule wardrobe:
I never wear pink, but if someone stole my entire wardrobe (THAT would be a chore!!!) and left this in its place, I’d be looking pretty wonderful on the street of Chicago. (Dublin, New York, Paris…)

I am curious about the BR silk blouse. One reviewer on the BR website indicated that the blouse did not wash well. That matters to me, especially at this price point. I am curious if you (Janice) had similar experiences with luandering. Thank you in advance.
I must confess – I send mine to the dry cleaner. In my defense, I take my husband’s shirts to the cleaners each week so it’s not a special “trip” to the cleaners. And the cleaners? Are on the Concourse level of my building – I literally don’t have to go outside to drop off and pick up.
Bad answer, I know. I will try to hand-wash it the next time I wear it, and see what happens!

I think it will wash fine. There is no reason to test our theory.
And no defense needed. I remember you mentioning the cleaners in your building. I just hadn’t had sufficient coffee this morning to access those memories when I was commenting. Your system works great. It is certainly the system I would embrace if I lived there.
Actually, I think when my husband retires, we will quit having his dress shirts laundered, and I will probably start hand-washing more of my things. It’s what I should do anyway – better for the clothes, better for the environment. But sometimes that bone-deep laziness set in…

Wow. Love this. You might convert me to a suit person with an adorable suit like this, that doesn’t feel like Melanie Griffith in “Working Girl”…I’m showing my age by this reference, I know. It’s just funkier and cooler—and less Wall Street. There is NOTHING wrong with that, if that’s your lifestyle. But, it’s just not mine, nor many other women.
I love ALL of the pieces, but I’m just not sure about the blazer and the khakis. I love both pieces. However, I can’t tell if they actually work. The colors are close enough to be similar, but far enough apart to not quite play well, in my humble opinion. I love the khakis, but I just feel as if the two together seem to be speaking two different stories. That being said, my two favorites are the gorgeous burgundy dress and the leather skirt. I have wanted a leather skirt–but they tend to look too “biker” chic for me. The one you’ve shown reads English Country House not Roadside Dive Bar. This one is elegant and upscale and in no way one that elicit solicitations to me. Stunning!
This is gorgeous! I’m retired and my life is casual now, but I love this as a work wardrobe, or for someone who likes to dress up a bit. These clothes can go everywhere.

I love this suit….it would be so much better on my proportions than a standard cut blazer and pants. I need things that end at the high hip or waist. I’m glad some retailers are out there thinking of the needs of different women. This whole wardrobe you’ve put together is mwah – chef’s kiss! I also like those double pleated chino pants….too bad they do not come in petite.
You’ve inspired me for my upcoming capsule change Janice! I didn’t end up with exactly the same (I am shopping my wardrobe and not spending money, after all!) but next season’s workwear is looking inspirational. Accessory capsule next stop.
I’ll be pleased when fitted blazers are back in fashion in another five or so years. The boxy cuts do nothing for me, not do ¾ length trousers (I’m tall so they end up looking more like plus fours).
I have really enjoyed the suit capsules. I definitely like this one the best. I think because of the jacket style. I am not nor have I ever been a suit person. And long ago I realized that I always prefer a cardigan or short type jacket to blazers. On me they both look better over dresses or with other bottoms. But how fun to see what you can do. I would never wear these together but sure would wear them as separates. I think the jacket would look great over jeans. Looking forward to the upcoming khaki/chino info. I just got the 9th Street ones from Alex Mill. Great fit and weight for TX winters.
I am so excited by today’s post because I have a beautiful pink and burgundy houndstooth blazer from Talbots that is similar in color that I haven’t worn in a while. Now I have some new ideas for styling!

Today was a reminder of how much I love red with brown. And that suit is a stunner – a shame I don’t need it! One question: I was looking at the red T-shirt on the Cos website and it looks like a tomato red. Is that correct or just the website’s color filter? Thanks for today’s great wardrobe!

I match the computer images – there’s no way I could have all of these things in my wee apartment! But I can share something that I learned years ago living in Ireland: colors don’t have to be flawlessly dye-matched to be worn together! Men in Ireland wear navy suits with navy coats over them that aren’t the identical navy, because that’s just not that easy to do, and in the grand scheme of life, it doesn’t matter!

I used to have a suede skirt like the one in the last photo—mine was dark green. I bought it used as an experiment it and wore it exactly ONCE, to a dinner, with a swearer and boots. Not my sort of garment and not comfortable at all. i don’t lead a leather skirt life!
