Our heroine was off to a good start – she was certain that navy is her favorite neutral, and she was equally convinced that white would be her light neutral. That’s a LOT more progress than many of us ever make in gaining control of our wardrobe!
She started here – her favorite outfit(s):
White tee – Lands’ End; checkered huggie earrings – Nickel & Suede; handbag – Talbots; sleeveless gingham top – Lands’ End; cardigan – Alex Mill; sandals – SoftWalk; linen pants – J.Crew
So she started building her Spring wardrobe by digging into her closet and dresser, and found all of these things:
Earrings – Anthropologie; navy & white striped shirt – Alex Mill; bandana – Faherty; striped tee – J.Crew; linen skirt – Boden; cotton sweater – L.L.Bean; ballet flats – Naturalizer
At this point, she realizes that her choice of navy and white is really solidly based on her preferences… But what about accent colors?
She looks at art.
She looks at nature.
She looks at brilliant wardrobe blogs…
And THEN, she sits down to watch some European rugby with her best friend, and she sees the defending European champions are wearing THIS:
Why yes, they normally wear wine red…
The color palette jumped off the jersey, and into our heroine’s heart (and head) in an instant!
But she’s still going to be wise, and plan. Just because one loves something doesn’t mean that you should go nuts and waste money, right?
She starts here, with her eight neutral garments:
And then she goes shopping! J.Jill is a treasure-trove for her:
blue necklace – BaubleBar; blue cardigan – L.L.Bean; pink necklace – Anthropologie; elbow sleeve sweater – J.Jill; linen pants – J.Jill; floral top – J.Jill; handbag – Olga Berg; gold ballet flats – Sam Edelman
Note that she wasn’t easily able to find shoes or bags in the colors she has chosen, so she does the smart/easy thing and gets some metallics!
And the floral top was such an instant favorite that her second wave of shopping found her with the dress too:
Tank top – J.Jill; tee shirt – L.L.Bean; pink quartz earrings – Farra; dress – J.Jill; linen cropped pants – J.Jill; bracelet – Farra; sandals – Sam Edelman
Does her wardrobe make sense as a 4 by 4?
Does this look like a wardrobe that will get her through her dressier moments of warm weather?
She doesn’t have to dress nicely EVERY day, but she wants to be able to look like she made an effort at least 3 days a week… There are always good reasons to do so!
And she has an abundance of options:
Truly, inspiration is everywhere, if we just have the open mind to look for it, and to recognize it when it appears…

Janice
p.s. Ten years ago, I was fresh back from a trip to Paris, and I was in the mood to share what I saw in shop windows. Window displays are one of the unsung delights of Paris, for me!

Yes, we can find inspiration anywhere – even my mugs in the cupboard are in my colours (Hubby has mugs in green and brown).
This is favourite colour combination along with navy, lilac and blue. I wear it all year round just with different types of material. However, the blue accent looks like periwinkle on my phone. I have a Liberty blouse that fits right in with this. I would love to find a rose pink cardigan but often have to sub lilac instead.
The dress is gorgeous. Unfortunately when I clicked the J.Jill links, a message is displayed which says that the e-commerce site and online orders are not available to people living in the European Economic Area (EEA). However, the UK ceased to be part of the EEA after we finally left the EU in 2020. Perhaps they haven’t got the message – mmm.
I just knew these would be your colours Beth T. Mine too.
People in the US aren’t good at world geography…

Janice
When we moved to New Mexico many years ago my husband tried to order me a Christmas present online from a US company and the person told him they didn’t ship internationally 🤣
Shaking my head in sadness…
love,
Janice
😂 It does cause a lot of headaches when country and regional borders are changed..
You’re so kind – I think anybody who doesn’t know that New Mexico is part of the US should be sent back for 12 more years of school.
I’m turning into an old grump!
love,
Janice
I love it. I love it. I love it. This is so close to my Spring/Summer wardrobe, I could cry tears of joy. I want every single piece you have posted, even though I have ones that are similar. It’s as if you read my mind (and took a stroll in my closet). Thank you for creating this plan.
Me? I’m one of those “I love it and I have to have it” shoppers. Despite being a TVF fan for as long as you’ve been creating this blog (I measure it in 4 houses ago!), I tend to be an emotional shopper. I have wasted more money than I care to admit because I loved something in the store (or online), but when I added it to my closet, I felt “meh” about it. This is inspiring to finally get my act together and make a plan, rather than shop from my heart.
I am not sure if others are like this, but I have two separate color palettes that I wear…one for Fall/Winter and one for Spring/Summer. This is my Spring/Summer palette and the “Shellduck” colors are my winter plan. Maybe it’s because the change of seasons here on the Maine coast is drastic…or maybe I just get bored in only one lane. But, I do have two distinct color stories for the year.
In any case, I am in love with this!
I love that you have two colour palettes! How many colours do they have?
I have been thinking about having three colour palettes, actually. One for basics all year round, one for spring/summer, and one for fall/winter, which would bring me to 12 colours in total..!
Still a thought experiment, as I have yet to declutter my wardrobe and digitalise it and actually *see* how many colours I already have.
In theory, I have three…one that’s just basics (and a lot of denim), one that’s for Fall/Winter that’s black, red, ivory and khaki, and one that’s for Spring/Summer that’s navy, pink, orange and white. Obviously, there aren’t hard and fast rules in my closet, but these are the overall colors.
I used to have two colour schemes but found my favourite summer colours appearing in autumn/winter. So I began incorporating “summer” colours in cooler seasons and got three.an extra three months wear out of most things. K
fantastic
I haven’t been able to write any comments for the last few days…
I really like the wardrobe.
The jewelry is fantastically chosen. I’m sure she’ll find white shoes on her next shopping trip.
I already have pink sneakers AND sandals. 😁
Love this color combo! I tend to be a stain magnet and consider white pants to be an act of bravery. 😄
This is spectacular.
Love how this heroine follows her heart! I can see burgundy/bordeaux working with her navy, pink and blue garments, just as in the jersey.
I’ve learned so much about coordinating colors and finding wardrobe inspiration in scarves, paintings, nature through your posts to Vivienne Files, Janice. Thank you!
Just bought those J. Crew linen pants. I wanted a replacement for my current pair before they wore out; they’re a workhorse in my wardrobe. But it was nearly impossible to find 100% linen pants in navy. Brown, black, cream, green, but no navy. Must not be one of the cool colors this year!
Hello, Amy! I think I recognize you as a regular speaker for our Garfield Park Master Gardeners group for which I was Program Chair for many years. Looks like we share something else to geek over besides plants. Good to see you here!
That’s me! Talk about a small world…
This is beautiful and I’d wear nearly every piece of it! I particularly like the necklaces you chose. Great job, Janice!
Ellen st I could have written this myself and over the years I have followed Janice I still shop emotionally so even my wardrobe staples change like the weather.
And yes I too have wasted a lot of money over the years although the local charity shop has benefited. This particular colour scheme is beautiful and once again I am sorely tempted but I do also love bright vivid colours so I am forever dithering. The colours I love and the colours that suit me best are unfortunately not always the same.
