A couple of weeks ago, Belovedest and I were wandering around Chicago when we happened upon a store called The Shudio. Yes, it's a "hybrid of a retail shop full of eco conscious goods... combined with a metalsmith jewelry studio." And yes, this is some fun... I could have purchased a lot of things, but I'm trying very hard to avoid that kind of reckless madness (especially with THREE big vacations coming up in the next year!), but I did buy a lovely little black leather wristlet, from a company called CHC. They donate 10% of their revenue to a local organization for homeless women, and all of their materials are local. Pretty nice; I was happy. But when I got home and dug out my bag for our upcoming trip to Italy, I realized that my ... View the Post

One of you recently bought a yellow dress... It wasn't this one, but it was an equally simple, beautiful dress...
What to do with such a nice dress, in such a statement color? Work your way through every color in the rainbow, and test them in your mind (in a PowerPoint presentation, or on Pinterest?) to see how they'll work...
First up, knowing that the purchaser is a woman who wears "cool" colors and accessories, I thought I'd take a look at putting some black with it. Some people might feel that this is too much bumblebee, or University of Iowa, or Pittsburgh Pirates, but I think that it's a striking option.
In the first example, I used a bit of white (or of skin, showing through the sandals) to unify the accessories. And the 2nd ... View the Post
She was enjoying the shopping...
Of course, she had to start with shoes. There are women in the world who don't need shoes, but that's not the general rule. So she started with something in her favorite dark chocolate brown:
She couldn't WAIT to get some earrings - she'd been wearing demure, tiny studs for years, and she wanted something more fun. And something PINK!
And a scarf, too! While she had been able to wear smaller, more traditionally patterned scarves for her job, she had never been able to just bust out with some big swishy piece of gorgeousness. And MORE PINK!
She wanted a new watch, too. She had been wearing a very lovely, small watch for work, and while she wasn't going to get rid of it, she really was looking ... View the Post
Ah, let's add some accessories to yesterday's black and beige travel capsule wardrobe, shall we? Remember, we started with this outfit, to which we MUST add shoes. There aren't a lot of wardrobe essentials in the world, but shoes, when traveling, might qualify:
And I always like earrings for travel - they can be out of your way, but still add a nice touch of ornamentation to your outfit, and draw some attention to your smiling face.
Oh yes, and a scarf can be very handy if you're going to be on an airplane or train which might be freezing cold!
Some people never wear watches, and many of us wear some sort of step-measurement device. But I think watches look really nice, so I think that they deserve to at least be ... View the Post
This capsule wardrobe looks so much more interesting with just a few simple additions! Remember, we started with this gorgeous jacket, and I put a simple black column of clothing under it. So shoes will be an essential first step:
Since the jacket pattern is so striking, I thought that a simple, solid scarf would be a good choice:
And I can never go too long without earrings; to me, they give a touch of shine and a feeling of polish to any outfit:
In a lot of wardrobes I wouldn't introduce a 2nd pair of shoes this early, but since this is specifically designed to be a travel wardrobe, making sure the right shoes are chosen is key. If we wait too late to pick shoes, there's a danger of panicking and packing too many pair; that's ... View the Post
Some of these color names could be debated for WEEKS... and then you can spend even more time trying to find just the right item! But why would you settle for something less than ideal, just because it was the easy choice? We have high standards... Just a suggestion - if you choose to search for these colors, be very creative and open-minded when coming up with words for your search. While the book called the 2nd color turquoise, many of the items that I found here (for Blue-Green) came up under a search for turquoise. And don't get me started on the whole lilac/lavender/light purple/mauve conundrum!
Yes, the royal tote is from Nike; some people NEED a washable nylon tote...
I've tried to show solid-color ... View the Post
This wardrobe is such a nice mix of casual fabrics with soft and pretty accents, I thought that I would try to continue the theme of femininity in the accessories, without getting too girly or sissy... I love these challenges! The original wardrobe is from yesterday; this is the starter outfit:
While I felt that jeans and a sweatshirt strongly suggested boots, I limited my choices to softer colors or boots with a metallic sheen to them. A lady-like boot might be a stretch, but these at least have a lighter feel to them!
For the first bag, I wanted to see something in the stone neutral, but with a bit of softness, or texture, or "pink-ness" to it...
An all-navy outfit strongly suggests a scarf that include navy, but also some lighter ... View the Post
I love this wardrobe... This wardrobe was originally put together in this post; with the starting outfit I'm leaning toward a pair of shiny black flats:
And for no better reason than to show some variety, I think that we'll give our mystery wearer a nice clutch bag. If you're not usually a handbag person, maybe all you really need is one nice bag for dressy occasions!
I'm changing the order of the accessories here so that I can find a scarf to really tie this outfit together. This is another thing that you really want to bear in mind when you're finding accessories for your wardrobe - they should be sourced (purchased, gift-hinted, etc.) in whatever order you need them!
Comfortable shoes! They can be plain loafers, something ... View the Post
These lists always crack me up, but I think they're worth considering, from time to time. I see two sides of this issue:
I hate this, because I don't think you should listen to what someone tells you to wear unless you're in an organization for which a uniform is appropriate, or if you're in a wedding.... but It can be edifying to see what other people think of as "can't miss" because it can clue you into things that are going to be readily available in stores for a while, and maybe remind you that it's time to replace or upgrade something that you haven't purchased in years.
Yes, my name is Janice (like Janus, the god of beginnings, endings, doorways, portals, and both sides of everything)...

The more I look at these colors, the more I like them; for a wardrobe with only 16 pieces, there are wide-ranging options from somber black to gentle pastels. This shows the possibilities of just a few pieces of carefully-chosen clothing. Here's the original wardrobe, and this was out starting point:
I thought it would be nice to show the possibility of some metallic accessories!
And small, simple, classic silver earrings...
But you are always going to want a pair of neutral shoes. (well, I'm sure someone out there would be happy wearing silver shoes every day. If that's you, then do it!)
The Ted Baker floral scarf was perfect with our first outfit, so I thought that maybe his watches would look nice with these pieces, too. ... View the Post
Always a favorite time of year for me - Pantone finds "new" colors to share with us!
Of course, there's no such thing, but I always like to spend some time looking at the colors, and trying to see if I can find them represented anywhere in the world of merchandise. Gone are the days when these colors dominated retail offerings!
While a couple of these colors are nothing more than cleverly named neutrals (the grey and the taupe), the other 8 might serve as a fun new accent color for a season or two. With that in mind, I looked at accessories, nail polish, and a few tee shirts, to see if anything was tempting.... And don't forget that canvas shoes are available in about a billion different colors, too!
I could easily see adding some of ... View the Post
Remember this wardrobe, viewable here? Time for some essential accessories!
Start, as always, with some shoes in which you could do serious walking:
This time, you might prefer a small bag:
I will always have earrings as the 3rd step, but from here on, the order of choices, and the overall numbers, are entirely up to you. If you want to have 3 pairs of sunglasses, go for it!
I love the range of off-white shoes that are available. Since the materials are very different from those of your garments, the colors don't have to match exactly, but they should be in the same color family. It's easy to wander into the "too grey" crowd if you're not careful; take your trousers with you when you go shoe shopping!
I can personally vouch ... View the Post
