Six Paintings, Twelve Months Paysage Algérien by Renoir

Six Paintings, Twelve Months: Paysage Algérien by Renoir

October 11, 2023

This painting really feels just right for this time of year - we're actually on our 4th consecutive day of true autumn weather!

What do you think? To me, this feels the most like a "normal" wardrobe. Maybe it's the mix of colors, or the number of colors?

This heroine starts out thinking that she's going to get some basic, infinitely useful garments this month; many of us start out thinking this way!

A navy tee shirt? Perfect for a solid column of color with her navy pants. The polo sweater can be worn with something under it, or on its own. And a v-neck sweater is classic, and also can be layered or worn alone...

Maybe gold loafers and a sparkly brooch aren't absolutely basic!

Six Paintings, Twelve Months Vocal Fabric of the Singer Rosa Silver by Paul Klee

Six Paintings, Twelve Months: Vocal Fabric of the Singer Rosa Silver by Paul Klee

October 9, 2023

Let's visit our friend with the very pastel wardrobe!

Her wardrobe at the beginning of this month is 29 garments (as I believe all six wardrobes should be...):

There are no glaring holes in this wardrobe, but our heroine can clearly see that she could justify more yellow, pink or green clothes. And she would like to have an outfit for cooler weather, even though she doesn't live in a relentlessly wintery place...

This is what she finds; she knows that the corduroy pants aren't a perfect match for any of her other garments, but she's content with blending shades of colors. Being flexible is sometimes useful...

Her updated wardrobe doesn't really look changed - just a bit more balanced.

And yes, ... View the Post

Six Paintings, Twelve Months Light, Earth and Blue by Mark Rothko

Six Paintings, Twelve Months: Light, Earth and Blue by Mark Rothko

October 6, 2023

This is such a favorite for me to work on each month - partly because it's a challenge, and partly because I feel like this wardrobe is much more functional than I expected it to be!

So far, our heroine has this 29-piece wardrobe, which is... pretty functional, and has a lot of lovely texture in it.

But I am beginning to think that it could benefit from a bit of white - not necessarily a white garment, but something that includes white.

And some pattern!

This heroine loves navy, and isn't worried that she may own too much of it - she's more interested in textures, like corduroy. And the idea of a "suit-like ensemble" of a vest and matching pants really appeals to her:

Why shouldn't a ... View the Post

Six Paintings, Twelve Months: Street, Berlin by Ludwig Kirchner

I think I'm going to be able to do these one at a time, which is an interesting approach!

What would I be thinking if this was my wardrobe inspiration, and my wardrobe?

Well, I'd be pretty thrilled with this painting! It's sassy, bright, and has purple right up front! And lots of black, which has been my favorite neutral for 40 years...

This wardrobe has a lot of appeal, to me. Maybe I would want more purple and less pink, but that's a pretty small concern...

But I would have to have a pair of black shorts! Maybe not in October, but eventually. And I definitely feel a longing here for black and white stripes, checks, florals, or even a great paisley scarf.

And a white cardigan. Yes, it's sort of ... View the Post

I’m Still Not Ready…

September 30, 2023

My computer is working, but I've been completely preoccupied taking care of my mother. I know you understand...

A Neutral Travel Capsule Wardrobe Start with a Scarf - Wild Rose Silk Scarf by Echo

A Neutral Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Start with a Scarf – Wild Rose Silk Scarf by Echo

September 28, 2023

Incognito She judges gardens. Every weekend, she goes to another city, and tours all kinds of backyards and front yards, and picks the winners...

And NOBODY knows that it's her! Well, the people sponsoring the garden walks always know her name, and they know her email address from which they will receive the big announcement...

She shows up for both days of the walks, dressed inconspicuously, not taking notes, not being a pompous "garden judge" who lords her authority over the poor gardeners...

She always packs the same 10 garments, for the entirety of the autumn (or spring) judging season.

The first things into her bag is her favorite turtleneck - cotton, but hefty enough for a cool ... View the Post

A "Two-Neutral" Capsule Wardrobe? Start With Art - Five Women by Max Beckmann

A “Two-Neutral” Capsule Wardrobe? Start With Art – Five Women by Max Beckmann

September 25, 2023

I don't generally think of Max Beckmann for wardrobe inspiration - his paintings always feel very cluttered and busy. But this one has a special charm:

Our heroine really wants some variety in how she can dress this fall - as much as she loves black, she wants to be able to wear quite a bit of "beige/tan/oatmeal" too...

She wasn't sure that this was something that one is allowed to do (what folly!) until she saw this painting, and realized that she would LOVE these colors:

She's very organized - the first thing she wants to be certain of is that her black wardrobe core is perfect:

Next, she very carefully selects her oatmeal/camel/buttercream/twig grouping - four garments, four color names! But ... View the Post

Autumn Outfit Ideas Japanese Season Shūbun - Autumn Equinox

Autumn Outfit Ideas: Japanese Season Shūbun – Autumn Equinox

September 22, 2023

Now that the world of retail has managed to synchronize itself with the seasons, and the weather, I feel comfortable returning to the Japanese 24 seasons.

I've tried to imagine 6 different heroines, all preparing for the cool weather and that "back to school" feeling that so many of us get when the days get short and the breeze quickens...

Our first heroine is a traditionalist, which a lot of navy in her wardrobe. She's pretty excited that she can mix in some lovely tan shades with very little effort...

Our next heroine dresses for the office, in mostly traditional colors, with little touches of brightness and whimsey. What's the point of being the coolest person at work if you can't bust out ... View the Post

A Travel Capsule Wardrobe that Starts with a Bracelet: Visionary Lynx Bracelets by Fierce Lynx Designs

Itty Bitty Tags, with Itty Bitty GPS Sensors Inside That's what she invented. They go onto saplings to tell the people planting trees that they're in a good spot!

Rather than planting hectares and hectares and HECTARES of the same trees, planters can now mix saplings up, based on how well the area they are in suits a particular species...

The wee tag will glow green when the tree is near the best altitude, exposure, slope, and all sorts of things for that particular species...

So if the conservation staff stumbles upon a glen or hollow that would be suited for a cluster of white birch, the trees will tell them!

Plant the trees, pop off the reusable tags, and move on...

A Fall Capsule Wardrobe Start with a Scarf - Vintage Vision by Simba LDN

A Fall Capsule Wardrobe: Start with a Scarf – Vintage Vision by Simba LDN

September 18, 2023 True-Life Adventures of Wardrobe Planning!

She started here. She's pretty smitten that this scarf is available in FOUR SIZES - if a scarf is truly perfect for your wardrobe, you can easily make the case for owning 2 sizes...

So these are the accents for her navy wardrobe, in her plan:

She knows exactly where she wants to start - she loves her navy cords, and her navy jacket. Her sparkly pink sweater with the ruffled neckline makes her smile...

The obvious first garment to check for - a navy tee! It's not the most riveting outfit in the world, but it's an ideal base for beautiful accessories. She adds her pink scarf to the plan, too...

Next? Green, of course!

This may not have been what ... View the Post

A Cool Weather Capsule Wardrobe - Start with a Fair Isle Cardigan

A Cool Weather Capsule Wardrobe – Start with a Fair Isle Cardigan

September 15, 2023 RETIREMENT!!!

One of her first projects is to get EVERY SUIT out of her closet. And all but 1 pair of pumps... And donate them to Dress for Success.

She will, of course, save a nice dress and cardigan/jacket for somber events...

But now, she's buying SWEATERS!!! She could never wear sweaters to work... And a patterned sweater just piles on - she couldn't wear any patterns except the most conservative, menswear-inspired prints. If she never sees a pinstripe again, it will be too soon!

Dangly earrings... swoon...

She fell in love with the cardigan, and determined that her first 13 garments would be based on the colors in it...

If you like this shade of "Green Dune", please note that Nordstrom ... View the Post
