START WITH ART: REVISITING ARLEQUIN ET FEMME AU COLLIER BY PICASSO

Start with Art: Revisiting Arlequin et Femme au Collier by Picasso

August 13, 2020 I Need to do WHAT??? Yes, she's missed 6 months in the office (although she has worked EVERY DAY...) and now she has to sit for a re-certification...

It takes 3 days. Away from home. In a hotel.

After being locked up with her entire family for half a year, she's really excited! The whole test thing isn't fun, but being able to eat room service and lounge around alone in the evenings has a certain appeal...

She starts with her favorite "travel inspiration" painting:

She knows that she could just wear sweatpants the entire time, but she actually feels more awake and more businesslike if she dresses a bit nicer than that. And she doesn't want to have to do much thinking about what she will wear! This is her ... View the Post

A NAVY AND CAMEL WINTER WEEKLY TIMELESS WARDROBE – ADDING ACCESSORIES

A Navy and Camel Winter Weekly Timeless Wardrobe – Adding Accessories

August 11, 2020

Ah, winter... My favorite season, with my favorite clothes!

Let's look back - our mythical heroine has chosen this Weekly Timeless Wardrobe as her starting point:

And she's very smitten with camel, right now. So she's going to supplement her 13-piece wardrobe with these additional seven pieces - they give her a refreshed color palette, and a lot of new options:

Our heroine is thus starting her winter with these 20 garments (and, of course all of the other garments from the 3 other seasons!):

So let's assemble, for our heroine, a half-dozen representative outfits from this wardrobe, and add some accessories to each outfit!

First up - WARMTH! I can vouch for the waterproof, comfortable warmth of ... View the Post

Accessories for an Autumn Weekly Timeless Wardrobe + Burgundy Accents!

Accessories for an Autumn Weekly Timeless Wardrobe + Burgundy Accents!

August 10, 2020

Ah, Autumn clothes! Is there a more fun season for beautiful clothes?

Let's do some building around this Autumn Weekly Timeless Wardrobe core:

Just for the sheer fun of it, I found some burgundy (ish?) garments to add to this 7-piece Accents and Extras!

Now, our Autumn 20-piece wardrobe is together - it looks VERY fall-ish, doesn't it?

Let's start enjoying accessories!

When you're wearing burgundy, garnets seems like the most obvious stone to look for in jewelry. Garnets don't have to be insanely expensive (although there are some eye-wateringly dear pieces out there, of course!).

And a couple of timeless navy leather accessories...

This cotton scarf is small - a neckerchief, I believe ... View the Post

ADDING ACCENTS TO A COOL WEATHER WEEKLY TIMELESS WARDROBE

Adding Accents to a Cool Weather Weekly Timeless Wardrobe

August 5, 2020

I tried, SO HARD, to find enough burgundy pieces to use burgundy as an accent color; J. Crew has a perfect crewneck sweater in burgundy, (it comes in FOURTEEN colors!) but that was about as far as I could get!

So.... camel and teal! Not too bad a compromise, eh?

Let's get back to our starting Autumn and Winter Weekly Timeless Wardrobes:

I can't believe how many times I kept looking at navy dotted shirts, and dotted skirts... I'm obsessed, I fear....

When we break this wardrobe down by garment, we're pretty well balanced, but could certainly use some more colors!

Let's attack that camel idea that I had...

I've had a feeling about this heroine for a few days - I think her life requires a ... View the Post

AUGUST 2020 SIX SCARVES, TWELVE MONTHS, TWELVE OUTFITS

August 2020 Six Scarves, Twelve Months, Twelve Outfits

August 3, 2020

Grab your beverage of choice and make yourself comfortable; this is a BIG post! From here on, every "first of the month" post will have 42 images... My computer whimpers at the very sight of this file...

Normally, August has been a month in which we started preparing to get back to work, and savor the beauty of fall clothing. Many years, this has meant a blouse, cardigan and skirt, with appropriate accessories.

But this year, I'm going to be realistic, and address the life that most of us are living, and will be living probably until next Spring. This, to me, means jeans, a sweatshirt, and something to wear under the sweatshirt! And a mask...

If you question your ability to wear a sweatshirt with a scarf, or with ... View the Post

BUILDING AN AUTUMN WEEKLY TIMELESS WARDROBE USING CLUSTERS!

Building an Autumn Weekly Timeless Wardrobe using Clusters!

July 29, 2020

This is the wardrobe that I would be working on right now - although it's still a good time to find nice summer garments, late summer is the best time to find autumn clothes! (well, in a normal year...)

Remember this from 39 weeks ago?

These garments divide pretty neatly into 3 clusters; this isn't the only way the clusters could sort out, so if you have a different preference, go with it!

This is what the 3 clusters would look like - it's easy to see a ton of possible outfits from these:

So, with our color scheme from yesterday of navy and beige as neutrals, forest green as the accent (and white as the "spare" light neutral that keeps our heroine from having to wear beige shirts!), let's ... View the Post

how to build a capsule wardrobe starting with an April birthstone bracelet

How to Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe by Starting with a Bracelet – April 2020

April 17, 2020

Happy Birthday to my amazing mother!

What a beautiful piece of work THIS is:

She Doesn't Think Anybody Noticed... But she's been pretty... slack... about getting ready to telecommute each day. So she's turning over a new leaf - out of bed, SHOWER, do NOT put the clothes back on that are on the floor beside the bed. Earrings. Maybe a dash of lipstick. She needs to look (and more importantly, FEEL) like she's working...

This is her inspiration:

Her sweetheart isn't working, so she creeps out of bed at the appropriate time, and gets dressed from clothes she's now stashing in the hall closet!

It doesn't much matter from the waist down what she wears, but anything that's going to show when she's ... View the Post

PARIS PART 1_ THE MOST SIMPLE TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE POSSIBLE, AND LOTS OF GOOD FOOD…

Paris Part 1: The Most Simple Travel Capsule Wardrobe Possible, and Lots of Good Food…

January 29, 2020

I'm back! And it was glorious... Any time I get to spend that much uninterrupted time with Belovedest is going to be great, but this trip was truly special. Today and Friday I'm going to try to share some of it with you. If you're planning to go to Paris any time soon, I've got some suggestions, and if you can't make the trip, travel along in your imagination!

We left mid-day Saturday, with stunningly cheap tickets on Aer Lingus, the Irish airline. This of course meant that we connected through Dublin, which was quite simple. The most difficult part for me was wanting to just stay in Ireland! But Paris beckoned...

What did I wear for this epic 2 day trip? Why, my argyle cardigan of course! (This isn't ... View the Post

CREATE A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY ART: THE BLACK DUCK BY MARSDEN HARTLEY

Start with Art: The Black Duck by Marsden Hartley

January 15, 2020

As I start sorting out my brain to pack for Paris, I'm looking a lot at the Perfect 10 Packing Template... Bird Watching

Nothing rigorous - no cameras, no sitting in a blind somewhere waiting for hours for the sighting of the rare crested whompalicious swamp duck... Just lounging by the lake, on the deck, sipping a warm beverage and watching the birds come and go...

Her plan is to keep it simple:

She loves the unexpectedness of using brown with black. Why don't more people wear them together? Lots of birds pair the 2 colors in the plumage...

She will be going out at night with friends, so she plans for a couple of slightly dressy evenings...

She reviews her template carefully...

And ... View the Post

WHAT DOES A WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE LOOK LIKE? 3 IDEAS, STARTING WITH ART!

What Does a Winter Capsule Wardrobe Look Like? 3 Ideas, Starting with Art!

December 30, 2019

Ah, before we dive in, I have a few observations that I want to share:

Winter clothes are flying out of store - it wasn't at all easy to find these garments for these wardrobes! If you need something, start looking now. L.L.Bean still has a full assortment of sweaters and warm pants, but most other places are running out of sizes/colors even as I type. NOW I remember why I started this project before the season had even really started! By the same token, if you need specific things for warmer weather, be prepared to start looking by the end of January. It's weird, but it's the way the retail world seems to want us to shop... Lots of garments are currently sporting a "puffy sleeve" thing - especially at the ... View the Post

CREATE A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY ART - START WITH ART FOR COLD, WET WEATHER TRAVEL: SAINTS GENEVIEVE AND APOLLONIA BY LUCAS CRANACH THE ELDER

Start with Art for Cold, Wet Weather Travel: Saints Genevieve and Apollonia by Lucas Cranach the Elder

December 27, 2019

Remember our art/architecture Gothic specialist? She was a guest lecturer back in 2016, took a group of students to visit the Cloisters, and then was invited to lecture in Paris...

Nobody has the first clue how old she is; her white hair is braided into an intricate crown (how DOES she do that by herself?), her fingernails are always a practical length, but red and flawless... I still suspect that denim has never touched her body, except in passing!

She's inspired by these 2:

  The Saddest of Projects

She's off for a couple of days in Venice. Things are going to have to be moved, and she's going to make some suggestions about what needs to go first... The flooding isn't going to get better with ... View the Post

CREATE A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE FOR THE HOLIDAYS WITH EDITH AND THE KINGPIN, BY JACK VETRIANO

The Holidays with Edith and the Kingpin, by Jack Vetriano

December 25, 2019

Remember these 2? We first met them back in the summer of 2015, then Edith went to interview to work at the resort, and then AGAIN after she was hired...

Even during the first week of December, the resort was still quite busy; Edith has not realized when she was hired that they had an extensive winter sports complex in the forested areas behind the lodgings. She was thrilled - rather than just a summer job, this had become real, full-time work!

She clocked out from her lunch hostess shift and checked her mail cubby hole for any notes. And found this very imposing envelope:

Probably just a holiday card, although it felt sort of... hefty...

She was a bit excited, but she took a deep breath, composed ... View the Post
