A Travel Capsule Wardrobe – Packing for spring break – no bikinis, no shorts
The most interesting thing I've discovered in building four spring break wardrobes is how many items can be worn regardless of one's age or preferred level of modesty. Every wardrobe has had a striped tee shirt or two, a Chan Luu bracelet, ballet flats, the same white denim skirt, a tote bag, some simple tee shirts, and a cardigan or two. Timeless, indeed! ... A Travel Capsule Wardrobe – Packing for spring break, leaving straight from the office
It's not uncommon to have to go straight from the office to the train/car/airport, so this selection accommodates that need. An oxford striped shirtdress as a swimsuit cover-up, some more modest shorts, and more dresses than before make this a very adult vacation ensemble! ... View the Post

Wardrobe: Navy, Gray, BRIGHTS!!! and lots of outfits
Probably the final iteration of this wardrobe, unless I get another suggestion - leave a comment if you've got another variation you'd like to see! ... View the Post
Wardrobe: navy, gray, pastels, and lots of outfits!
Someone commented that when they looked at the camel and navy wardrobe here, they just imagined that the camel garments were gray... From your lips to my ears: here's the same wardrobe, generally, but more casual, and substituting gray for camel. I think my next adventure might be to switch out the accent colors, eh? ... Wardrobe: Camel, Navy, Pastel and a LOT of pictures…
This post is going to cover a lot of bases: I've received emails asking for a navy and camel wardrobe using pastels (specifically light blue and pink), I've had lots of questions about how many outfits can you REALLY get out of 24 items of clothing (over 100, easily), and I've had requests for showing how accessories can be worn with a variety of different ensembles.
Something to note here - once I got past the core of the two "eights" in the neutrals, I added some things that... well... not everybody would like! Partly, I really love the plaid pants, but moreover, I wanted to show what kind of options are possible when building on a solid core. And yes, I would wear those saddle shoes in a heartbeat!
Secondly, the ... View the Post
A Travel Capsule Wardrobe – Packing in Navy with neutrals
I haven't exhausted the possibilities of packing a "navy-based" suitcase - I could still do butter yellow (but not gold, unless you're a cheerleader), any shade of pink (but not red, unless you're running for political office), all shades of purple, and probably a few more shades of green. But I think you get the general ideal of how versatile a core of five garments in your neutral, solid color can be.
If you have interest in seeing suitcases for other colors, or particular trips, just let me know!

A Travel Capsule Wardrobe – Packing in Navy with classic accent colors
A Travel Capsule Wardrobe – Packing more navy, with two other “warm” colors
December 30, 2011
As soon as I posted yesterday's illustrations, I received some questions about using other colors with navy. So here are two additional ways to work with the core of navy garments and brown accessories...
My next plan is to show THE SAME navy garments, only with accent clothing and accessories in cool colors. A core (a "Not so Crazy Eights") of a neutral color has a lot of potential for serving as a base for any favorite color you might want to wear!

A Travel Capsule Wardrobe – Packing in Navy, with brown accessories & warm colors
I've been receiving LOTS of questions about wearing navy clothing with brown shoes, and "warm" colors. This seems like it could be tricky, since navy is pretty much a cool color, but men have been making this combination of cool and warm work for decades, and it always looks great! My suggestions:
make sure your "navies" go together - navy can vary widely. Either buy all pieces at one time (ambitious, to be sure!), buy them from the same designer (equally ambitious), or plan to carry or wear a couple of navy items when you shop, so that you can be certain that your current garments will work with new purchases. feel free to experiment with any warm color as an accent. Green, gold, every shade of rust, persimmon, and ... View the Post
Chic Sighting: at the corner of Clark and Diversey
November 10, 2011
For years, high-quality menswear has shown brown leather accessories with gray and navy clothing (check out Paul Stuart if you're not familiar with the idea). The woman I saw Saturday was working that look to perfection...
