I LOVE IT, BUT WILL I WEAR IT? A BRIGHT PINK FAIR ISLE SWEATER

I Love It, But Will I Wear It? A Bright Pink Fair Isle Sweater

December 14, 2020

My mail box often contains requests for assistance (or cries for help!), and this one seemed like a bright, cheery question to share. I personally adore Fair Isle sweaters, and this one is pretty gorgeous:

Rather than write a tale of glory about one of our heroines, I'm going to share my thought process as I try to answer our friend's question; I hope that's okay!

My first thought was that this is lovely, and a color combination that would flatter many of us, so my first inclination is to make this work!

Secondly, I looked more closely at the colors included here, and found 2 neutrals - white and navy. (okay, Diana Vreeland assures us that "pink is the navy blue of India" but I'm not in India...) And since ... View the Post

A Special Art Surprise….

Go to this site:

and see how much people can dress to resemble the paintings that they admire...

Be careful clicking around - I have no idea what this might be linked to, as it comes from China. But it is riveting, and inspiring,

A RAINBOW OF WARDROBE ACCENTS! (PLUS A FEW NEUTRALS…)

A Rainbow of Wardrobe Accents! (plus a few neutrals…)

December 11, 2020

While we're pondering using Echo scarves for our "12 Months, 12 Outfits" posts next year, I thought I'd dig into their site at some length...

What colors!

If I were forced to choose from among the 12 colors I show here, this might be my choice... Maybe...

Although moving into the darkest days of winter, a bright red could never be a bad choice!

If you like orange and look good in it - WEAR IT! It's just such a nice color, and we don't see enough of it.

Same with yellow - especially a really strong yellow like this. Such a lot of light and cheer you would bring to your home, wearing this...

Yep, you've seen this scarf before! But it's so lovely with this sweater, and this color is just ... View the Post

how to build a capsule wardrobe starting with a December birthstone bracelet

Start with a Bracelet – Winter Wonders by Fierce Lynx Designs

December 9, 2020

In a Sea of Green and Red... She's going to stand out! Not that we don't love green and red for the holiday season - where would we be without them? But she's going to take the train into the city for a couple of days of admiring decorations, maybe some shopping, and eating room service while watching movies!

And she won't be blending in, thank you!

The weather will be pleasantly cool - no blizzards this year! If she finds that she needs something warmer, she will stop into Uniqlo and pick up a down vest or jacket... But she expects to be very comfortable just like this:

She's really packing quite light - with a clear winter theme!

Looking over her wee travel ... View the Post

CHOOSING ACCESSORIES: PAINTERLY ARCHITECTONIC BY LIUBOV POPOVA

Choosing Accessories: Painterly Architectonic by Liubov Popova

December 7, 2020

Remember this most difficult group of colors?

Although it's a challenging work of art, it does include three easily-available neutral colors, and 2 really nice accent colors. Our heroine finalized her wardrobe with this, and it seems pretty practical:

But she wants, and needs, accessories! Let's accessorize a dozen outfits for her, and make some effort to use some things more than once. It would be sort of fun to have completely different accessories for each outfit, but that's not exactly practical...

First off, for those of us spending the majority of our time indoors, what's not to love about a pair of wool clogs? You could certainly dash to the mailbox, or around the block with the dog, wearing ... View the Post

START WITH A SCARF - NAVY HEIRLOOM SERIES SCARF BY ECHO

Start with a Scarf: Navy Heirloom Series Scarf by Echo

December 4, 2020

She lives a simple life, but she loves the idea of indulgent masses of jewelry. While that's not practical for her, a scarf that shows such a thing is perfect!

The Bones of the Trees This is her plan for a long weekend away, looking at trees...

She's going to drive, so it's not a terribly long trip. And she's not quite sure what she will find for weather; hopefully she will see beautiful late autumn days!

Nobody can quite figure out why she's traveling to look at trees, now that the leaves have fallen!

She's got things for very cool, for moderately cool, and for swishing along a paved path in a skirt and sweatshirt or sweater! She pretends that it's a kilt...

She's ... View the Post

DECEMBER 2020 SIX SCARVES, TWELVE MONTHS, TWELVE OUTFITS

December 2020 Six Scarves, Twelve Months, Twelve Outfits

December 2, 2020

It's the end of the year - at least for this project! I will probably re-visit this to analyze these wardrobes when I've had a few days to digest them; if you have any specific requests for analysis please let me know!

Of course this has been an... unusual? year. Thus, I'm finishing off these wardrobes in a pretty "non-festive" way, since the majority of us have no business going to a party!

But we can still look good, and not waste clothing money, right?

Let's hop to it!

I think this first color scheme has been very successful. The neutrals are classic, the accent colors are pretty easy to find, and it all has worked out well. This year, our December additions are going to be (for the most part) warm, ... View the Post

November 30, 2020 You Want Me to WHAT??? Yes, fly to Chicago for ONE meeting....

"If you go to the meeting on Wednesday, you can take the rest of the week off..."

Okay... She will go up to visit a friend with a lovely home along Lake Michigan, about an hour north of the city.

And since her employer is paying for her to check her luggage, it's going to be a pretty big suitcase!

She starts here:

Her favorite wardrobe colors are navy and white, so she chooses this color palette for her trip:

First, she pulls out her Common Wardrobe that she's been wearing this autumn. She includes her white jeans because (a) she loves them and (b) there will be days when she and her friend don't leave the house! Why not?

And ... View the Post

CAN YOU BUILD A WARDROBE WITH COLORS THAT CLASH? START WITH ART: PAINTERLY ARCHITECTONIC BY LIUBOV POPOVA

Can You Build a Wardrobe with Colors that Clash? Start with Art: Painterly Architectonic by Liubov Popova

November 27, 2020 She Really Loves This Painting...

And she has all of these colors in her closet! So she figures that she will pull together her "Garde-Robe du Mois" (wardrobe of the month) for the end of November and the start of December based on this...

First, she's trying to figure out how often she will wear things, based on the "How Many Pieces of Clothing Should I Own?" worksheet.

She starts with 31 days - a longer month, perhaps.

And then, because she never leaves her home these days, she knows that she only wants to wear 1 outfit per day.

She will probably evenly split between 2 and 3 garment outfits.

And finally, she plays around with the "How many times do you want to wear each piece during your time ... View the Post

She's quite happy with how her wardrobe is progressing; she's basing her choices on this painting she just discovered, and the color palette she developed from it:

She has her clothes all ready:

This is already a pretty fun wardrobe, but she's eager to see what accessories will add. The perfect scarf is all this outfit needs - a pair of earrings and some loafers finish this outfit in a classic way!

A sweater with texture and a pendant with a real eye-catching pattern are perfect for a work day:

The turtleneck print is subtle but its just ... View the Post

A Brief Hiatus….

November 20, 2020

I'm taking today, and possible Monday and Wednesday... Sometimes, there are more important things in life than work and personal style (I know, it's hard to imagine!).

My plan for an upcoming post is to revisit the question of how much clothing we all actually need.

If this is a question that intrigues you, I built an Excel worksheet to help you find a number. It takes into consideration the following variables:

Over what period of time are we planning? How many outfits do you wear in an average day? How many garments are in your average outfit? and How many times within your time period do you want to wear any individual garment?

You can get the worksheet here for a kind $.99 donation to help ... View the Post

a question first - does anybody else have ankles that get cold? I was out today, and saw many people appropriately bundled for winter, except they were wearing cropped pants with nothing covering their ankles... Shaking Up the Routine She still has to go to her office - she's often the only person there. But she sits by a window onto the street, and people often stop to read the real estate ads posted very near where she sits. So she feels that she has to dress nicely, even if she's alone!

In the normal world, she wears black and white, with accessories. She likes to mix patterns, and the austere discipline of her wardrobe pleases her.

But THIS year? It's time for some fun!

And this is what inspired her! ... View the Post
