A dilemma, and a wardrobe math solution

So I've not done the best of jobs in cleaning out my wardrobe, and I think I finally understand what's holding me back.  Somewhere in my heart I hold onto the hope (delusion?) that I'm going to get an office job again some day, and that I therefore won't be wearing an apron non-stop.  Therefore, I think I have to hold onto ALL of my office-worthy business clothes...In order to get past this, I've tried to approach the problem the way Vivienne would.  Basically, what are the available options I have RIGHT NOW, just with the clothes that I've decided to keep in my wardrobe up to this point?

If you remember, I'm at the 32 garment point in my plan:

And from these garments I've decided that the following, ... View the Post

A Travel Capsule Wardrobe – Packing for summer on the coast of Maine

A dear reader asked me for some suggestions about what to take for a summer on the coast of Maine.   She has these garments (well, garments very similar to this) that she currently really likes:

white linen shirt – Ralph Lauren, orange striped tee – Debenhams, navy striped tee – Sandro, purple striped tee – Splendid, white shirt – Marc Jacobs, white & dark wash jeans, denim jacket – Adriano Goldschmeid, black shirt – La Garconne

And she told me that she really likes blue, so I suggested the following additions (some of which she may already have), as well as some essential accessories.   A few possible combinations follow.  Enjoy! and dream of the beach...

Blue cardigan – Paul Smith, white tee – La ... View the Post

Imaginary shopping: a wee “pick-me-up”, in pink

My last springtime adventure in imaginary shopping is the "how to experiment with a fashion color" question.  I'm totally smitten with this striped top, and my desire for it would be sufficient to convince me to introduce pink into my wardrobe for six months or a year - however long the top lasts.   Here is a case in which I would NOT spend a lot of money on jewelry, and I would buy a decent pair of shoes or sandals, but not a long-term investment pair.  This small shopping spree is designed to brighten up my wardrobe for spring, indulge in a garment which I love, and participate in the "brightly colored pants" trend, without breaking the bank.

Tee shirt – J. Crew, cropped pants – Diane von Furstenberg, pink ... View the Post

A Travel Capsule Wardrobe – Packing in black, white & blue

The general theory behind my packing plan can be translated into nearly infinite color combinations.  If pink is not your cup of tea, try blue!  In the next few days I'm going to swap out for at least one different neutral, and a few different accent colors.  The theory is always the same: 5 core neutral garments, an accent jacket, a couple of white or light neutral tops, and then the 6 dash accent garments in your color(s) of choice.  Easy peasy, once you get the hang of it...

black cardigan – Ganni, sapphire earrings – Lord & Taylor, white tee – Michael Stars, Scarf – H&M, Denim coat – Derek Lam, black pants – Donna Karan, patent loafers – Tod’s, black tote – Big ... View the Post

My Wardrobe: season-less essentials

These next eight garments are things that I wear almost the entire year - maybe not the dog days of August, or the teeth of a bitter blizzard (not that I really remember what that's like), but month in, month out, these clothes never go into storage. And the accessories - same thing.  They are my standby goodies, over and over again.

Both striped tops - L.L.Bean bot tee shirts - Lands' End both dresses - Lands' End both pair of pants - Eddie Bauer

Scarves - Hermes Flacons, and Jardins des Metamorphoses earrings - Cartier Stone necklace - J. Jill pearls - Etsy gold penny loafers - Cole Haan cross-body bag - Osgoode Marley Tote bag - Tumi

If I were to pack the eight solid black garments I chose for my last wardrobe ... View the Post

A Travel Capsule Wardrobe – Packing for spring break, leaving straight from the office

It's not uncommon to have to go straight from the office to the train/car/airport, so this selection accommodates that need.  An oxford striped shirtdress as a swimsuit cover-up, some more modest shorts, and more dresses than before make this a very adult vacation ensemble!

Tee – Splendid, blazer & pants – 3.1 Phillip Lim,  tote – Alexander McQueen, earrings – ice.com, bracelet – Chan Luu,  flats – Bottega Veneta, carry-on bag - Victorinox

swimsuits – Nina Ricci, flat metallic sandals – Jimmy Choo, navy & white striped oxford shirtdress – Thom Browne, stripeacd dress – Michael Kors, print cardigan – Crumpet England, Dress – Diane Von Furstenberg, draped top – Alloy, white sneakers ... View the Post

A Travel Capsule Wardrobe – Packing for spring break, in aqua and ocean blue

A young reader asked me to suggest what to pack for spring break, based on her preferred water colors, and on two bikinis she owns.  These are my ideas...

Tee – J. Crew, Jeans – Place des Tendances, cardigan – J. Crew, tote – Modcloth, earrings – Jamie Joseph, bracelet – Chan Luu,  flats – Nine West, carry-on bag - Heys       Note that I ALWAYS recommend long pants, closed-toe shoes, and a cardigan or jacket for travel.  When you embark on a voyage, you truly have no idea how long you'll be traveling, or under what conditions.  But you know that (a) planes are cold, (b) airports are big, and (c) it's nicer to take off too much clothing than it is to wrap oneself in an airplane ... L’Armoire Idéale: white shirt – seven ways

This book has all kinds of interesting suggestions in it!  One of the things that the authors do is to take a simple garment and suggest seven different ways to wear it.  Now bear in mind, some of these are not necessarily something you or I might wear, but they are thought-provoking, and that has some value, right?

Shirt – Steffen Schraut, red pants – Moschino, black tee shirt – Dorothy Perkins

Tank top – Pro Surfing, pants – Debenhams, shoes – Keds,  swimsuit - Missoni

Jeans – Levi’s, belt – Diane von Furstenberg, sandals – Loeffler Randall, skirt – Haute Hippie   I'm going to be on vacation all next week, so you're going to get a full week of "one garment - seven ways" ... View the Post

Travel Capsule Wardrobe: sunset and sky meets the 8 blues

The ever brilliant Juhli asked what would happen if someone with a good base wardrobe (like the sunset and sky wardrobe from here) wanted to expand their wardrobe.  She pondered the wisdom of using one of the "eights" like the one in blue that I did here as a basis for acquisitions.Juhli is one really brilliant person... see the results!
