A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY BETWEEN BREATH AND THE RIVER 4 BY SUSAN OSGOOD

Winter Travel: Between Breath and the River 4 by Susan Osgood

January 7, 2019

She predicts flooding. Flood plains, coastal erosion, river bank frailties - she's the expert. And this is her favorite painting...

Long ago she decided to limit her wardrobe to her favorite shades of blue, and to use navy and shades of grey as her neutrals. She has lots of serious things to think about, so having a simplified way to get dressed every day saves her time and energy for her work!

She's often contracted out to television channels which focus on weather disasters - she will spend a few days at their headquarters helping their permanent staff make predictions about areas that need to be evacuated in the face of upcoming storms...

Ice blockages are particularly hard to evaluation - they can ... View the Post

CREATE A CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY “INSTRUMENTS DE MUSIQUE: BY PABLO PICASSO

Evaluating a Wardrobe: A Year of “Instruments de Musique: by Pablo Picasso

January 4, 2019

Our final heroine from 2018! The square peg in the round hole, who nevertheless manages to be very effective at her job...

When she saw this painting, she knew that it would be a favorite for a long time:

So when she entered the workforce, she designed her own color palette and style guidelines... She knows that it's important for her to fit in with her co-workers, but she also wants to show her own personal... point of view!

When she traveled in January, she was absolutely delighted with what she packed - unexpected in some ways, but perfectly appropriate, just the same!

That trip went so well that she was... honored... (?) to be asked to visit their most difficult client just a few months later! ... View the Post

CAPSULE WARDROBE - 12 MONTHS, 12 OUTFITS – BASED ON 6 HERMES SCARVES

12 Months, 12 Outfits – based on 6 Hermes Scarves

January 2, 2019

Here they are! It took me a while to choose, but I think I'm going to love these...

First up - black and white with NO red... I'm interested to see how far I can go with just 2 shades of blue as accents. Given the success of the strictly navy and white wardrobe from last year, I'm optimistic!

This year, I thought that I would start with color palettes for each scarf - I think this will make it easier for me to make certain that I'm focused, and that each month's outfit will have a good chance of working nicely into the overall wardrobe.

I'm starting with the most uncomplicated outfits possible - lots of white tee shirts! It's easy to forget how useful these kinds of garments can be...

CREATE A CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY “PAYSAGE DE NEIGE” BY PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR

Evaluating a Wardrobe: A Year of “Paysage de Neige” by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

December 28, 2018

Ah, our friend who loves peace and quiet... She was smitten with this painting from the first time she saw it:

She found this painting to be so moving that she decided to base her wardrobe around it. In order to focus her shopping, she isolated a couple of key phrases and a small color palette that she drew from the painting:

She's been very pleased with the results!

In January she decided to get away for a peaceful long weekend at a resort that would be relatively deserted in the winter... Her plan was to go for walks, sit by the fireplace and read, and just generally relax and absorb the tranquility!

She found much to enjoy... So much so that she went back in April! Packing for that ... View the Post

BUILD A CAPSULE WARDROBE IN 12 MONTHS, 12 OUTFITS – DECEMBER 2018

Build a Capsule Wardrobe in 12 Months, 12 Outfits – December 2018

December 3, 2018

Our heroines are getting holiday outfits! It might not be what they most need, but it's almost December, and in many of our lives, that means parties are coming thick and fast...

When I looked at this first wardrobe, I realized that our heroine didn't have a black cashmere cardigan! (I know, billions of people make it through life without one, but a wardrobe heroine certainly can make a case for one...)

And yes, I'm going to show you velvet jeans a lot - I am currently wearing a pair, and I'm smitten. They come in eight colors, including emerald green, a stunning bright pink, amethyst, sapphire, and lovely gold. I sized generously but not insanely large, and they fit wonderfully...

ACCENTING CHARCOAL GREY WITH 4 PANTONE SPRING 2019 COLORS

Accenting Charcoal Grey with 4 Pantone Spring 2019 Colors

November 23, 2018

If, for some amazing reason, I ever quit wearing black ALL the time, I can easily picture replacing much of it with dark grey... I just love the way this looks, and the versatility that one would have with this limited number of pieces.

One of the joys of having a neutral core in this color is that pretty much any accent color will go well here! What might not work? Hmmm... lime green? Think of something, and I'll give it a try!

For example, I could probably use any of the Pantone Spring 2019 colors here. For fun, I've chosen 4, just to see how different the ensembles look when it's all pulled together!

First I want to try out this lovely Living Coral. I stand by my thesis that this color will work well ... View the Post

CREATE A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY TROJAN GATES BY HELEN FRANKENTHALER

Evaluating a Wardrobe – A Year with Trojan Gates by Helen Frankenthaler

November 9, 2018

Over the course of the year, I've assembled 4 travel capsule wardrobes based on this most wonderful painting:

To guide my choices, I isolated four colors upon which I focused, and I chose a couple of adjectives to help keep the styles that I chose consistent:

In January, when our translator first won an award, she packed this:

Then in April, she was offered a really exciting work possibility:

You can't feel terribly sorry for this heroine - she had to go to Paris in July to meet with the author of the book she was translating:

The translations are going very well... in October, the author invited her back to Paris for a long weekend which didn't seem to be focused entirely on the ... View the Post

BUILD A CAPSULE WARDROBE IN 12 MONTHS, 12 OUTFITS – NOVEMBER 2018

Build a Capsule Wardrobe in 12 Months, 12 Outfits – November 2018

The purchase of a serious cold-weather coat is not something to be taken lightly! First up, a ton of people will see your coat - far more (at least in a city) than will ever see anything else you wear. And of course, coats can be expensive, so you don't want to flounder around through 2 or 3 of them to get what you really like...

To clarify what's going on here, for newer readers: I started back in January by choosing six Hermes scarves, and then assembled six similar, but different, outfits - one each to "go with" each of the scarves. Each month, on or around the 1st of the month, I add another outfit, and we continue to evaluate how each wardrobe progresses.

The little square up in the top left corner ... View the Post

A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY INSTRUMENTS DE MUSIQUE BY PICASSO, REVISITED FOR AUTUMN 2018

Instruments de Musique by Picasso, Revisited for Autumn 2018

October 31, 2018

She's not quite like anybody else in her office... and she uses that to her advantage! She first really showed her skills during a trip to a client back in January. Since her success was so complete back then, she was then sent to her firm's most difficult client in April. The firm became so dependent on her to handle clients that she had to fly straight to a contact signing from her August vacation. Happily she manages these situations well!

So she wasn't particularly stunned when she received a bonus at the end of the fiscal year. Well, maybe she was a little bit surprised - it was a pretty substantial bonus!

After some thought, she decides that she'll save most of the bonus, but that she's going to take a long ... View the Post

A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY PAYSAGE DE NEIGE BY RENOIR, REVISITED FOR AUTUMN 2018

Paysage de Neige by Renoir, Revisited for Autumn 2018

October 29, 2018

She enjoys peace and quiet. Solitude. A chance to curl up and read, or go for a long walk...

When she went to the resort in January, everybody thought she was crazy. But she knew that it would be beautifully deserted and melancholy, in the best possible way! She enjoyed that trip so much that she went back in April - partly for the relaxation, and partly because she made a new friend!

Their friendship grew - when she visited in August she spent most of her evenings with her new and dear friend... But She was Surprised... When they were talking about her next visit, and her friend tossed out the idea: "why don't you just bring a bag of clothes up here and leave at my place?"

Well okay!

ADDING ACCESSORIES TO A GREY AND PINK PERFECT 10 TRAVEL WARDROBE

Adding Accessories to a Grey and Pink Perfect 10 Travel Wardrobe

October 3, 2018

Last week I left you with a (what I thought was) lovely wardrobe, but it didn't have any accessories! Well, I was trying to share a new idea about how to choose what to pack, so I didn't want to throw too much out there at one time...

So let's accessorize now!

First, let's remind ourselves of the clothing that we had in this 13-piece (Perfect-10 to pack) wardrobe:

In order to make certain that we have enough accessories, I'm going to take a handful of outfits that I previously assembled, and accessorize them. When it's all collected, we're going to have a few too many pairs of shoes (well, unless you like to pack lots of shoes...) and quite a few handbags. One could of course reuse any or all of the ... BUILD A CAPSULE WARDROBE IN 12 MONTHS, 12 OUTFITS - OCTOBER 2018

Build a Capsule Wardrobe in 12 Months, 12 Outfits – October 2018

October 1, 2018

It's the most fun day of the month, here at The Vivienne Files! Because I'm working on a smaller-than-normal computer monitor, I decided that I was going to make some deliberate wardrobe choices for our heroines, this month. I took a critical look at the various wardrobes, to date, and made some selections for October that fill in some (to me) pretty critical gaps! Let's see how it worked out:

This heroine didn't have a white shirt! To me, that's an easy choice to fill. A simple black cashmere sweater, and tan pants that pick up the color of the border of her scarf make a classic outfit that's perfect as a background for her scarf.

So her overall wardrobe, and accessories, look like this:

One of the ... View the Post
