START WITH A SCARF_ SUMMER PALMS SILK SQUARE BY ECHO

Start with a Scarf: Summer Palms Silk Square by Echo

January 11 2021 Feeling Summery in the Winter

Yes, the weather is cool, but she can still think about palm trees and warm breezes...

So she starts with a palm-printed scarf, and isolated the colors she loves:

Let's pause for a moment to think about the math behind a really efficient Six-Pack travel capsule wardrobe:

Well, enough of THAT technical stuff!

Her long weekend away is pretty casual - mostly family activities. But she still likes to look nice, and feel like she's made an effort!

Spills are possible. (both the liquid kind and the bodily tumbling onto the ground kind!)

Some relatives keep their homes... very warm, shall we say.

She's prepared!

If 1 or even 2 garments are soiled, torn, ... View the Post

INTRODUCING A NEW ACCENT COLOR INTO AN ESTABLISHED WARDROBE – THE VISIT BY MARIE LAURENCIN

Introducing A New Accent Color into an Established Wardrobe – The Visit by Marie Laurencin

January 6, 2021

A new year, and our heroine has decided to incorporate a new accent color into her (already pretty lovely, I'd say!) wardrobe:

If you'd like to look back at the earlier posts based upon this painting, they are:

April 29, 2020

May 8, 2020

September 11, 2020

January 4, 2021

Before she impulsively wanders off into the world of all things green, she pauses to collect and sort her current wardrobe. First up, her cardigans, dresses, and "bottoms." (I just don't love the term bottoms - someone suggest a useful alternative, please!)

Frankly, although this looks like the motherlode of grey pants, they're all very different fabrics, and at least a few different silhouettes...

Now, her ... View the Post

START WITH A SCARF_ TIGER IN THE GRASS BY ECHO

Start with a Scarf: Tiger in the Grass by Echo

December 16, 2020 Channeling her Inner Tiger This is her new favorite scarf:

She loves the colors, and the image of the tiger...

The tiger is going to be VERY important to her during the next couple of days; she's going to have to be quite... tough? Assertive? Imposing?

Suffice to say that she might encounter some acrimony, and she's going to have to stand up for herself!

She's only going to be there 2 days, possibly 3. But during that time, she is going to use all of the tools and resources available to her to represent herself as strong, capable, and decisive!

The night before she leaves, she grabs her tiger scarf and assembles a travel capsule wardrobe that is perfect with it. Sometimes she's more the ... View the Post

START WITH ARCHAEOLOGY - BUILDING A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE BASED ON THE NEBRA SKY DISC

Start with Archaeology: The Nebra Sky Disc

October 16, 2020

Two notes from your humble author:

1. Please note that when you're assembling YOUR wardrobe, and your accents, everything doesn't have to match as closely as I try to match things! I'm trying to squeeze a bunch of garments and accessories into a visual space that's tiny, and where slight color disparities will be exaggerated. You do NOT have to be quite so rigorous when your socks are going to be mostly under your pants, and a good few feet from your sweater!

2. Speaking of socks - when you're shopping for socks, read ALL of the fine print. There's a world of socks right now that aren't meant to be worn with shoes! That's a rude shock if you were not aware...

It was in the science news - new research has led to ... View the Post

START WITH ART – REVISITING POEM BY BUNYA NO ASAYASU BY HOKUSAI

Start with Art – Revisiting Poem by Bunya no Asayasu by Hokusai

October 8, 2020 It Was the Kids' Idea... Remember this heroine, and her gang of friends that were going to the lake house?

The children asked for a "Meeting of the Commune" after dinner. Nobody quite knew when they became a commune, but if it entertains the kids, right?

The bottom line? Let's stay here until at least the end of 2020.

The adults can all take turns going into town for essentials, and to mail their ballots; The internet service is more than adequate for all of the kids to do their school work here; Everybody will be able to spend a LOT of time outdoors, which they can't do in town; The kids have volunteered to help cover the windows in their rooms with the clear plastic stuff that helps keep cold ... BUILD A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE – START WITH ART: WHITE PEACOCK & BLUE DELPHINIUM BY JESSIE ARMS BOTKE

Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe – Start with Art: White Peacock & Blue Delphinium by Jessie Arms Botke

September 21, 2020

I found this painting last week when my arms were killing me - I thought I'd find some whimsical painting that had lots of ARMS in it...

But this artist's middle name came up in my search!

What good luck is that? I'm Wearing White ALL Weekend...

The possible color combinations are many - I could easily have looked at that intense green at the top, or the deep brown of the branch...

But this particular heroine is being rebelliously dressy, so this is her palette:

They're all driving in from all around the region for the 100th anniversary of the Aviary. Her great-grandparents founded it, and it's still going strong!

There won't be any big festivities - just a special weekend for visitors, and a ... View the Post

ADDING ACCENTS TO A COOL WEATHER WEEKLY TIMELESS WARDROBE

Adding Accents to a Cool Weather Weekly Timeless Wardrobe

August 5, 2020

I tried, SO HARD, to find enough burgundy pieces to use burgundy as an accent color; J. Crew has a perfect crewneck sweater in burgundy, (it comes in FOURTEEN colors!) but that was about as far as I could get!

So.... camel and teal! Not too bad a compromise, eh?

Let's get back to our starting Autumn and Winter Weekly Timeless Wardrobes:

I can't believe how many times I kept looking at navy dotted shirts, and dotted skirts... I'm obsessed, I fear....

When we break this wardrobe down by garment, we're pretty well balanced, but could certainly use some more colors!

Let's attack that camel idea that I had...

I've had a feeling about this heroine for a few days - I think her life requires a ... View the Post

ADDING ACCENTS TO A WARM WEATHER WEEKLY TIMELESS WARDROBE

Adding Accents to a Warm Weather Weekly Timeless Wardrobe

August 4, 2020

Let's see what kind of fun we can have, now that the Weekly Timeless Wardrobes are finished!

It seems to me that during the Spring and Summer, you might just as well keep both seasonal 13-piece Wardrobes in your closet - 26 garments isn't going to fill any but the tiniest of closets. (I had a closet in Dublin that was pretty full when you got above 30....)

Of course, in the earliest months of Spring, you're probably going to want some Winter clothes still! But let's assume for our purposes that the following plan is for all of the warm weather months, no matter when they fall!

Remember, we had complete, if somewhat monochromatic, Spring and Summer wardrobes from earlier:

Let's put everything from these ... View the Post

I LOVE IT, BUT WILL I WEAR IT? PAISLEY SKIRT

I Love It, But Will I Wear It? Paisley Skirt

July 24, 2020

Her email to me was urgent, but self-effacing. She REALLY wants this skirt - I mean really really really REALLY wants it... but she doesn't want to be a bother...

Such nice people you all are!

But who could resist this challenge? It's mid-calf, it's pull on, it's got some great colors:

Our heroine was thinking of this as the pivot piece in a travel capsule wardrobe - would that be possible? I say - resoundingly - YES!

Let's start with a couple of tank tops and a 2nd layer for freezing indoor temps, as well as cool outdoor evenings:

A couple of uncomplicated pink tee shirts, and some sparkle earrings! And yes, you absolutely can wear Keds with skirts; it's relaxed and brings the dressiness level ... View the Post

EXPANDING A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE: START WITH ART – PETIT MATIN BY JOAN MITCHELL

Expanding a Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Start with Art – Petit Matin by Joan Mitchell

July 15, 2020

A few months ago, one of our heroines was heading off to a lovely manor house, with lots of gorgeous gardens...

Her wardrobe for this trip was inspired by this completely confusing but very beautiful painting:

For their relatively short visit, she packed this most lovely travel capsule wardrobe - it sort of radiates the feeling of flowers...

WELL! One day, out of the blue, the got a call from the inn where they stayed back in April. They were pretty desperate for business, and because they knew our heroine and her partner, they were willing to give them an AMAZING deal to come up for the REST OF THE SUMMER...

Essentially, they understand that having anybody in the inn, even ... View the Post

ADDING ACCESSORIES TO A “TWO MOOD” TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE

Adding Accessories to a “Two Mood” Travel Capsule Wardrobe

July 10, 2020

Yesterday, our heroine was getting ready to head to the lake, with a packet of relatives, for the rest of the summer!

For her packing inspiration, she started with this painting:

She has her clothes all ready to go!

But she doesn't have... well... shoes? earrings? a bag or two?

Let's do this!

She really likes her square earrings because they're called Lily Pad earrings! Although she's never seen a square lily pad...

She knows that she needs rubber flip flops - her feet will be wet fairly often! And sunglasses - you ALWAYS need sunglasses...

Next, she grabs her sunhat, and her Keds. Even if the Keds get wet, they'll be fine within a day... And even though ... View the Post

July 9, 2020 The Kids Can Canoe All Day... And the rest of us can hike, or go with the kids, or sit on the shore and watch...

She thinks this is brilliant - the 3 families will distance from each other for 14 days; the house is plenty big enough. It will require some vigilance to make certain that the children understand what's required, but they've been pretty smart, so far...

Knowing that they're going to be there probably 'til the first of September, she wants to plan carefully. ... View the Post
