“Whatever’s Clean 13” Capsule Wardrobe in Coral, Navy and Beige

June 12, 2015   Oh, this was FUN! It's delightful how much difference the change in accessories makes in the look of the whole capsule.   First up, a wonderful scarf, and some classic, inexpensive coral-colored jewelry. (it goes without saying that we don't wear real coral - no reefs will be destroyed to adorn us!)  

And then I changed out the shoes, the rest of the jewelry, and tossed in a cute little clutch! The only clothing that I swapped was to substitute a coral cardigan for yesterday's beautiful brown one...

Olive Capsule Wardrobe with Accessories in Brown, Lacy Gold and Turquoise with Coral

January 21, 2015   Today, I've found some olive items - not the easiest of projects! But as elusive as olive is, it's well worth the effort because nothing looks quite as subtle, warm yet relaxed as olive. I put together six outfits - three for warmer weather, and three for cooler temperatures. From there, a few accessories are all that's needed...

A Black Wardrobe, with Turquoise, Coral, and Gold

January 3, 2015   A few of you have expressed that you couldn't wear unrelieved black, and that you're quite grateful that this isn't your dress code! You can easily see that it's a challenge to look like "yourself" in a way that's distinct from all of your coworkers if you're all wearing black. That's why I was happy to hear that many people in this uniform are at least allowed to wear whatever accessories strike their fancy.   Today, inspired by my neighbor who wears a turquoise and coral necklace EVERY DAY, I chose accessories that all have turquoise, coral (fake coral, of course) and gold, and which include texture or detail. A 4 by 4 Capsule Wardrobe in Coral, Turquoise, Black and Grey

Please bear in mind that I prepared this post before I left for my vacation, so some of the links might be dated...This is a great, unique, way to accent black and grey; coral and turquoise are often found together, and there's some AMAZING jewelry available (usually in warmer weather) that combines these two colors.  But of course we don't wear real coral anymore - it's pretty endangered...

Common Capsule Wardrobe Colors: Coral

Coral comes in a range of tints - there are more "pinkish", less "orangish" versions out there too if those would be more flattering.  But any of them will look completely appropriate and attractive with all of our neutral color usual suspects.  And as we move into August, and what is for many of us the end of summer (my great-nephew goes back to school IN 10 DAYS!!!), this might be a good wardrobe refresher, as well as a low-commitment way to test drive a new accent color for your wardrobe.   Please note - this tunic-length top is going to be "iffy" with some cardigans; I personally can wear a top hanging out below my cardigan without worry, but you might want to bear this conundrum in mind when ... How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe from Scratch – The Wardrobes, Finished (for now…)

Remind me, when trench coats are back in stores, that we want to revisit these capsule wardrobes and make some additions. If you think of anything else we should address (December holiday attire?), send me a note at theviviennefiles at gmail dot com.

I broke everything out into two pages; I might have been able to fit everything on one page, but we wouldn't have been able to see anything - the earrings would have been teeny little dots on the page!

How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe from Scratch Step 12: A Winter Coat, Boots and Scarf

July 8, 2015   For many of us, a really SERIOUS winter coat is a necessity in the capsule wardrobe.  Realistically, I couldn't get through the winter without my parka that sort of resembles a cross between a sleeping bag and a wee portable padded room...   But let's focus on getting a more attractive, more widely useful winter coat.  I've chosen a mixture of accent colors and neutrals, and tossed in yet another scarf because it's difficult to have too many scarves!   My friend in black and brights wants a statement coat to stand out in the crowd of black - and this blue should do the trick, eh?

How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe from Scratch Step 8: Two Tops, and a Necklace

One thing that I've noticed after many years of wearing clothes is that I feel like my capsule wardrobe is better balanced if I have more "tops" than "bottoms".  Two to one seems a pretty workable ratio for me, and so in search of this it's time to grab a couple more blouses, tee shirts, or sweaters.  This is an ideal time to introduce a pattern, if you wish, or to bring in more of your accent colors.  If you found that you really preferred wearing light neutral blouses, those are perfect for this step.   And a necklace... Start With Art: Paris Street; Rainy Day by Gustave Caillebotte

This wonderful work is back in the Art Institute of Chicago; it was being restored and was not available to view for a while.  It's such an amazing work - the asymmetry, the subtle powdery colors, the juxtaposed angles...  

  Even though this is a chilly winter scene, I'm going to look at some warm-weather clothes...   I love this coral color, so that's going to be the primary accent color in this wardrobe.  

And the taupish grey that suffuses this painting is a perfect base for some simple summery tops.

Navy and Beige with Coral and Sun

April 24, 2014   Warm accent colors with navy and beige?  Absolutely!  

I've changed up the cardigan again - this one is a splurge and a half, but the navy and coral are beautifully presented here:

And just to show some other possible choices, I've picked out a new skirt and a pair of outrageous summer pants.  I personally would wear these pants in a heartbeat, but your mileage may vary!

This gives you this 24-piece wardrobe; isn't it fascinating how changing just a few of the garments makes so much difference in the overall feel of the ensemble?

As always, lots of possible ways to wear these - from the most casual, to reasonably dressy activities.
