Black and white tweed. Pull-on waist (which is delightful is you're among those of us who don't tuck in our tops!). LINED TO THE KNEES!!!

Well yes, if you can use a pair of nice but not formal pants, these would be great...
Of course they're perfect with all of the black sweaters in the world:
If you like pattern mixing, tweed is maybe the easiest pattern to include. It's subtle enough not to glaringly clash with other things...

I'm now beginning to feel like this is my permanent uniform! It's colder at the International Headquarters of The Vivienne Files than it is in the rest of the apartment, so I bundle a bit...
Note that all of the tops except the last are worn OVER my dress - the last top is a long-underwear-ish piece that's under my dress!

When I'm out and about, I'm always looking at other people! (mostly, I'm looking to see if there's anything with which I can help them...)
In Chicago, and I suspect in a fair number of cities, a black tee shirt with blue jeans is the base for all kinds of outfits, from casual to dress, and in any color you can imagine!
Their starting point is pretty simple:

I really admired a simple black cashmere cardigan with an amazing scarf that picked up the blue in this heroine's jeans:
The scarf will take the place of a mortgage payment... but it is perfect with her coat and shoes!

Nothing amazing going on in our world, except for unseasonably warm weather. I never know if I'm supposed to be happy about it, or worried because I know it's not a good sign..

If it's REALLY the beginning of winter, we will need something warm! I have to admit - I have 2 vests (pink and black) and I wear them a LOT - they're just enough warmth to get me down the block to the drugstore or other "near" errands...
If it hasn't snowed or rained, there's no reason that you can't still wear white jeans. I'm sure someone, somewhere, still feels the prohibition of "white after Labor Day," but we don't accept those limitations!
This next outfit has just a hint of the holiday season...
These really EARLY sunsets can be hard to take...
If you have a favorite accent color, a vest in that color can be both useful and fun!

I've been in the apartment, or in our building, most of the time. Today we are going out to visit our favorite garden center in the city - looking for our Christmas wreath! (yes, it's wildly early, but we want to get the perfect one!)

This imaginary heroine had the exceptional good luck to wander into Banana Republic to do her shopping this month!
One might say she went a bit overboard, but if she's reasonably careful, she should have some of these things for the rest of her life! (I would buy a black suede shirt...)
