ADDING CLOTHES AND ACCESSORIES START WITH NATURE – THE SPINNING PULSAR OF THE CRAB NEBULA

Adding Clothes and Accessories: Start with Nature – The Spinning Pulsar of the Crab Nebula

September 14, 2022

Remember our heroine, the photographer who was going to go hang out at the observatory for a few weeks?

This is what she is using as her inspiration for her travel wardrobe:

When we left this heroine, she had decided to pack this:

She discussed her plans with a number of other science photographers, and realized that she was probably going to be at the observatory longer than she had initially planned! For one thing, a pretty well-known astronomer is going to be visiting for a few days at the end of September, and she would be insane to miss the chance to meet him.

And there are a couple more astronomic events expected, so she just decided to stay two weeks longer. There's going to be a (sort of) ... View the Post

August 29, 2022 Staying at the Observatory Until the Autumnal Equinox

There are all kinds of interesting things to observe and photograph near the equinox; she's going to stay until then, to have everything ready!

She will be alone most of the time, and it will get quite cool before she comes home...

So she starts her small travel wardrobe with some warm things, in the navy of the night sky:

There's laundry in the housing facility at the base of the tower, so she doesn't need much at all for clothing; these 9 pieces will go a long way!

But she realizes that if she takes a few more shirts and sweaters, she won't have to do laundry as often! So she turns to one of her favorite recent astronomy ... View the Post

JAPANESE 24 SEASONS OF THE YEAR – TAISHO – LARGE HEAT

Japanese 24 Seasons of the Year – Taisho – Large Heat

July 22, 2022

Well, this is timely! I was just out on Michigan Avenue, the temperature is around 90 degree Fahrenheit, and the most comfortable women I saw were wearing loose dresses...

And so was I!

The most important thing to remember on days like this is to stay hydrated! And of course, protection from the sun is critical...

It's possible to wear black, if you've got your route planned so that you can stay on the shady side of the street! If you're not sure about how sunny it may be where you're going, you may want to choose something in a lighter color.

This is how it feels...

Even if you're somewhere surrounded by buildings and pavement, you can wear pretty flowers!

You might find that ... View the Post

START WITH NATURE_ INSIDE THE ORION NEBULA BY DRUDIS AND GOLDMAN

Start with Nature: Inside the Orion Nebula by Drudis and Goldman

October 28, 2020 Star-Gazing for a Living! There's an opening at the observatory complex, and it's her turn to spend a month working on her research...

The complex is a combination of labs, residential and dining areas, meeting rooms, and of course the telescope. There are laundry facilities, so she doesn't need to pack clothes for 30 days. Her wardrobe is built around the navy of the night sky, and this is her chosen accent inspiration:

She ses the colors this way:

She starts with the core of her cool-weather wardrobe - her "Common Wardrobe" of timeless, versatile pieces:

She hesitates.... for a good LONG while. But then she remembers that she's going to be up there with a bunch of scientists, who won't ... View the Post

START WITH NATURE: BUILDING A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE BASED ON THE COMMON SHELDUCK BY DENNIS A. JONES

Start with Nature: Revisiting the Common Shelduck

October 21, 2020

She's been driving down to visit them at their lake house on a regular basis for a few years now... Her first trip was in the dead of winter; a bit of warmth and sitting outdoor was delightful!

After the pandemic started, she was down earlier in the summer to take advantage of their cooking frenzy...

Now, they're talking about having her come for the entire winter! Why not - it's not like she's having buckets of fun being in her apartment almost all day every day!

And she wouldn't mind seeing some birds...

"Come down for the weekend and we can discuss it; you can have the bedroom and bath that you had back in the summer, and you can work on the desk in your bedroom. We're upgrading the wifi..."

"If ... View the Post

START WITH ARCHAEOLOGY - BUILDING A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE BASED ON THE NEBRA SKY DISC

Start with Archaeology: The Nebra Sky Disc

October 16, 2020

Two notes from your humble author:

1. Please note that when you're assembling YOUR wardrobe, and your accents, everything doesn't have to match as closely as I try to match things! I'm trying to squeeze a bunch of garments and accessories into a visual space that's tiny, and where slight color disparities will be exaggerated. You do NOT have to be quite so rigorous when your socks are going to be mostly under your pants, and a good few feet from your sweater!

2. Speaking of socks - when you're shopping for socks, read ALL of the fine print. There's a world of socks right now that aren't meant to be worn with shoes! That's a rude shock if you were not aware...

It was in the science news - new research has led to ... View the Post

START WITH NATURE_ REVISITING THE COMMON SHELDUCK BY DENNIS A. JONES

Start with Nature: Revisiting the Common Shelduck by Dennis A. Jones

June 5, 2020

In the dead of winter, four years ago, we visited with this heroine when her friends invited her south for a long weekend to get out of the cold... I'm SO smitten with the color palette; if I were to start over, I admit that brown leather goods would tempt me!

Drive Down! Her friends have invited her back...

"We've on this kick where we have full-blown dinner parties every night. It's been the same gang of us for the last few months; we could use a new guest!"

"Since you've been quarantined for a couple of months, and so have we, can we assume that we're safe for each other?"

"My brother and sister-in-law are staying in the guest house, so you can take the upstairs suite; with the kids ... View the Post

CREATE A CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY NARCISSUS - BIRTH FLOWER FOR DECEMBER

Narcissus! The Birth Flower for December

December 10, 2018

These feel SO out of season right now - I wonder why they are the flower for December? I'm really happy that it isn't poinsettias (!) but I was expecting to find that December's flower was something... wintery?

What this flower does give us is 3 possible accent colors (orange, yellow and white) to brighten up neutrals during these shortest days of the year. (Northern Hemisphere, of course; for those of you south of the Equator, just hold these ideas for a few months!)

There are some lovely pieces of jewelry available with narcissus - or narcissus-ish flowers:

If you would really like to splurge on a brooch in your birth flower, check out the Joseph Giovanni site. They have three different levels of ... View the Post

A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY CHRYSANTHEMUMS - THE BIRTH FLOWER FOR NOVEMBER

Chrysanthemums! The Birth Flower for November

November 5, 2018

I've been thinking about chrysanthemum colors for weeks! As soon as the first halfway cool day arrives in Chicago, a hundred flower beds get dug up, everything in them gets tossed in the garbage, and mums are planted. Thousands and THOUSANDS of them, all over the downtown...

These are my 2 favorite colors:

I was eager to see how these colors would accent simple, neutral outfits or dresses... I went a little bit overboard on the accessories, but I like to give a range of options. These different vignettes would offer dressy or more casual ways to wear the same clothes, which is always wise!

One could wear this black dress a half dozen times between late November and the first of the ... View the Post

A CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY MARIGOLDS - THE BIRTH FLOWER FOR OCTOBER

Marigolds! The Birth Flower for October

September 26, 2018

author's note - I'm working from Florida, on my laptop. Any drop in the quality/resolution of images is a result of that - I apologize profusely! It's quite the change from working on the monster monitor that I have in Chicago... If you see anything egregiously in need of repair, please don't hesitate to let me know. Love, Janice

Marigolds! So bright. So cheery. Such a nice step into fall... I'm a little bit stunned that someone would use them in a fragrance, but I'm not a "nose," so I might easily be missing something, eh?

Many of us might find this a tough color to wear, but remember that you don't necessarily have to have a ton of bright orange/gold in your outfit to pay homage to the flower, or ... View the Post

CREATE A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY ASTERS, THE BIRTH FLOWER FOR SEPTEMBER

Asters! The Birth Flower for September

August 29, 2018

Asters... It means stars, which, when you look at the flowers, makes sense!

However, from my perspective, this was really tricky. (Yes, I considered using all "star" accessories - of course I did!);

First up, there are no items with asters on them, except for a very expensive dress, and the really nice cuff bracelets that are available for each month.

To pile on, asters come in about a million shades, from darkest red to a lot of various purples...

What to do? I found six excellent neutral dresses to serve as our background, and then I experimented with a range of colors as accents. (it would be fascinating to mix each of the dresses with each of the various accessory families!)

How do things look? Black is ... View the Post

A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY POPPIES - THE BIRTH FLOWER FOR AUGUST

Poppies! The Birth Flower for August

August 17, 2018

Why yes, I did INDEED loose track of the beginning of August... At least the rent got paid on time!

This is a banner month for flowers - poppies!!! There are LOTS of poppies in garments and jewelry, as well as "poppy" being a great color for both nail and lip colors. So if you like poppies, or a clear, vivid red, you're in luck! Topshop has some sleepwear with poppies on them, and Dorothy Perkins has tops, pants, skirts and dresses in a poppy print. It's a veritable treasure trove of flowers...

So what did I find?

Really LOTS of beautiful goodies this month... This brooch cries out to me... but then brooches often do!

One of the great things about any shade of red is that it can be worn - really easily ... View the Post
