May 2026 – Building a Wardrobe Based on Spirit of Autumn by Albert Pinkham Ryder

May 8, 2026

I don’t know if the character in the painting is sad, or is just getting away from the news – and other people – for a few minutes…

This heroine remains quite pleased with her color palette. She’s having good luck finding things that she both likes and needs – shopping isn’t always easy when you’ve decided to wear just a limited palette. Unless you live in black, like some of us…

At the end of April, our heroine had this 20-piece wardrobe:

Although the weather still isn’t particularly warm where our heroine lives, she decided that she was going to look for clothes for warm weather ANYWAY.

And she debated about the necklaces. She was trying to choose between the two, and she kept going back and forth… There’s nothing wrong with buying two necklaces at a time, if they’re both excellent in your wardrobe! But it feels funny…

sleeveless sweater – Coldwater Creek; cardigan – Fat Face; dress – White Stuff; turquoise and tiger eye necklace – Hye Jane Jewelry; aquamarine necklace – Hye Jane Jewelry; linen pants – J.Crew; sandals – Birkenstock

Here’s where our heroine finds her wardrobe template. When you buy both pants AND a dress at the same time, you have a surplus of bottoms. For a short while…

These are our heroine’s clothes, now. I can picture this for a January – May sabbatical in a city that’s new to you…

My favorite images are always those of accessories – I think they show a heroine’s personality more than anything else:

Our heroine now has some good options for warming weather… That will have to be her focus for the next few months, or until fall clothes come back into stores. That’s just after the 4th of July around here!

When I look at this wardrobe, I always think of the word grounded. For a professional listener, that seems just about right, eh?

love,
Janice

If you’d like to look back at all of the earlier posts about this heroine and her wardrobe, you can find them here:  Christmas Eve Preview, January, February, March, April

p.s.  Ten years ago, I broke one of the sacred rules of The Vivienne Files, and included a garment image in which you can SEE THE MODEL!!! It was a special request to build a wardrobe around an “art jacket.”

This looks well-balanced to me. I can see that a warm weather top and second layer in ivory would extend everything as summer approaches. Having a dress and a skirt really gives her options!

What great additions to this already-positive wardrobe! I’m so glad you chose the teal for these pieces. While I am a person who loves brown, the wardrobe was starting to feel very heavy and the pieces you chose add a bit more lightness to it.

My favorite pieces are the jewelry. I’m so glad you included both necklaces. My birthstone is turquoise and it’s always hard to find pieces with turquoise that aren’t too southwest for my preppy, New England taste. My beloved late sister’s birthstone was aquamarine. So….this post felt a bit like a love note from heaven for me.

I stumbled on the brand Fat Face when I was visiting my daughter in England. I couldn’t believe how much better the prices were than in the U.S., including a beautiful linen shirt for the equivalent of $78. I bought three tops for myself, a linen shirt for my husband, two pairs of pants, one pair of shorts, one top for my daughter, two pairs of socks, all for approx. $400. Good quality all.

To me, the character in the painting is pausing to reflect or pray. So not sad, just taking some quiet, restorative time, a good practice for all of us.

When everything in the wardrobe is laid out, it does seem unexciting. But the outfits you’ve put together really lifts the wardrobe thanks to a nice balance of light and dark colors. The new necklaces are great choices, glad you included both.

So glad you included items from Fat Face and White Stuff. My whole wardrobe consists of clothes from Marks and Spencer, Fat Face, White Stuff and Next. All good quality and all reasonably priced.
Some pieces I have had for years.
Lands End pieces used to be similar but the choices on the American site are so much better and usually cheaper than our British website!

Gorgeous dress and pendants. That is such a lovely colour. White Stuff do Petite length which is another plus.

Seasalt is another British brand worth looking at. They do flat lay photos and International Delivery.

I am SO tempted to buy that beautiful teal dress! It would fit right in with my color palette. The pendants are really nice too. I like how this heroine’s wardrobe feels just right, more balanced.

    Not sad, contemplative.
