April 2026 – Building a Wardrobe Based on Spirit of Autumn by Albert Pinkham Ryder

April 3, 2026

Peace – so important these days!

For someone who listens to other people for a living, projecting a feeling of peace is pretty important! So our heroine has decided that she will base her entire wardrobe on the colors in this painting. It will give her a consistent, easy to get dressed wardrobe, and for her clients, it will give them a feeling that she is a consistent and reliable person.

Her 16-piece wardrobe at the end of March was warmly-colored, and quite versatile:

Our heroine was more than ready to start buying spring clothes, but when she saw this suede blazer, she re-thought everything!

This jacket is the kind of thing that might make it worth changing plans – it’s an investment without being stupid expensive, and if she’s careful and takes good care of it, she should have it for… maybe 10 years? At any rate, she plans to wear it frequently through cool weather!

Rich ginger long sleeve tee – Lands’ End; necklace – Farra; rich ginger short sleeve tee – Lands’ End; suede blazer – Lands’ End; rich ginger barrel pants – Lands’ End; tote bag – Longchamp; flats – Steve Madden

Her 20-piece wardrobe after these purchases is still coherent and versatile. But now, it has a suede blazer in it! Sometimes, one really special garment can pull more than it’s own weight in a wardrobe…

Her wardrobe template continues to expand in a tidy manner. Templates don’t always work out this well, please be aware! If your template isn’t completely neat and tidy like this (yet…), don’t worry. There’s no test at the end of this course…

Has our heroine figured out how she’s going to wear her new clothes? Heck yes – one does NOT buy a new and rather expensive jacket without knowing FOR A FACT that it will be worth the price:

I love this wardrobe…

love,
Janice

p.s. Ten years ago, I was in Paris, and I shared with you one of my all-time favorite wardrobes. It was based on a series of photographs of a lunar eclipse…

While I love these colors, and I especially love the suede jacket, I have to admit, it’s starting to feel pretty heavy to me. Don’t get me wrong…I think it’s beautiful. But, I also am feeling it’s a bit claustrophobic. So. Much. Brown. And I like brown! But, for me, this is just too much.

I would love seeing a teal or ivory dress…or ‘lighter’ tops. Each piece here is exquisite. But, the overall impression, particularly of these four new pieces, is that it is dragging down our sharp heroine. You can be ‘lighter’ in spirit, while still dealing with difficult clients. Trust me, I know.

I hope next month brings something to lighten the mood. If not, I have complete faith that just as there is a lid for every pot, this is the absolute right wardrobe for the right heroine. She just isn’t me.

Some tops in Butter Yellow, that’s so popular right now, would brighten the whole wardrobe!

A blazer or other long jacket is so versatile. If it’s a cooler day, I layer a waistcoat or slip overs underneath. I hope next month, she leans into teal and cream.

Your look-back is so apt for the launch of Orion,/Artemis this week on its journey around the Moon and back. It brought back memories of seeing the first manned mission to the moon in 1969. We all crowded round our neighbour’s large TV (she was the first in our street to get a colour TV). This time, my husband and I watched the live stream from NASA. Let’s hope the crew have a safe journey.

I would never wear that suede jacket in my life! Over the years I’ve made multiple purchases like that—gorgeous things I found at a wonderful price and loved, but never wore (including a lovely suede skirt I wore exactly twice). Luckily, these have usually been thrift store purchases that were probably in such wonderful shape because the previous owner didn’t wear them either! But it takes a while, doesn’t it, to find out what you really wear vs what you think you will wear? I am very happy with my wardrobe now, because I’ve learned what I like AND what is comfortable to me (no “crisp button downs!”) AND what my lifestyle means i will have a chance to wear (no need for nearly any of the skirts I’ve bought over the years, I only need a few for church and special occasions—but I need more sweaters or blazers than these wardrobes call for because my office is cold).

I went to Loft yesterday and saw a lot of these brown colors—but not much in chocolate brown, which is what I need. But i assume that means these browns are everywhere, so if this is your pallette you’re in luck this year!

I love seeing the wardrobes build, it’s very hard for me to get a handle on mine even after following for years, and always need a recheck! Yesterday I evaluated and put away my winter work clothes and got out all my spring things, it’s so satisfying to see a relatively small group of clothing pieces that all, or almost all, go together vs. a big pile of stuff! The moon wardrobe is lovely, what an interesting small mix of colors.

Lovely additions. I look at it, just my view, you understand, as stocking up on core items or basics. Like Gail, I have figured out my style and it does not include a really spiffy blazer, lol. But for this heroine it sound appropriate. The colors are comforting and low drama, so she has chosen her palette wisely.

The suede blazer brings me back to a belted jacket I found for ten cents at a rummage sale when I was a teen. I’m pretty sure I wore it through my university years on repeat. That’s some cost-per-wear!
I would definitely wear a suede blazer a lot! I live where western boots never go out of style, so jeans/turtleneck/blazer with boots is a real uniform. But, the blazer with trousers or a simple skirt accessorized in different directions works adds to the possibilities.
The remarkable thing about brown, if you patiently acquire it in your needed basics, is that it is an amazing backdrop for a lot of colors. Looking forward to seeing our heroine add a pretty print dress and other light looks for spring and summer!

Really loving the Lands’ End rich ginger color. It suits my fair coloring so much better than the darker shades of brown such as chocolate or coffee. So I’m considering buying a few coordinating pieces.

Overall, I like this palette the best. I don’t think it will be difficult to add summer pieces in the lighter colors which will round out this wardrobe nicely.

That blazer is to die for … sadly it doesn’t come in my size. Makes me want to check out a leather supply store to make my own.

Maybe I’ll settle for Ultrasuede instead.

I’m surprised at how much this wardrobe appeals to me. Considering I have exactly one dark brown pair of pants in my wardrobe. But I am seriously thinking of experimenting a little given the availability of so many tones of browns these past few seasons. Thanks for all the inspiration!!!

Oh, I love this wardrobe. It’s wearable all year round.
…for me, a few accent colors.
I found a jacket in this exact color at a thrift store.

This is a beautiful cohesive wardrobe. Shame it’s not in my colours.

My blazer isn’t suede. It’s sky blue boucle. I can wear in spring/early summer then late summer/early autumn. I have a couple of cotton/linen jackets for summer.
