January 2026 – Building a Wardrobe Based on Spirit of Autumn by Albert Pinkham Ryder

January 12, 2026

She’s a professional listener…

She doesn’t want to be invisible – that would be creepy! But she does want to appear warm, unobtrusive and comfortable. Her clients will speak more freely if she doesn’t look as if she’s going to rip off their head…

So she chose this most calm and reflective of paintings, and an assortment of colors from brown to bone, with accents of rust and a pretty greenish-blue that matches her eyes:

She started building her new work wardrobe with the most classic of ivory and brown, but in soft textures of cabled cashmere and corduroy:

French press cashmere sweater – J.Crew; earrings – Farra; cream turtleneck – L.L.Bean; cords – J.Crew; tee shirt – L.L.Bean; bag – Brahmin; loafers – Franco Sarto

She knows that finding her favorite green is going to be difficult, so she has to jump on anything she finds that suits. And although the rust vest doesn’t have anything actually matching it – yet – she picked it up immediately because it’s 100% wool. A fleece vest that’s not polyester has a lot of appeal…

Patina cashmere cardigan – J.Crew; earrings – Chiarella; small scarf – Le Parmentier; beige shirt – Banana Republic; ivory corduroy pants – Lands’ End; rust vest – Alex Mill; loafers – FitFlop

Her 9-piece wardrobe is already covering a lot of her neutral essentials – those light-colored tops worn under a sweater bring light near her face, so its wise to have the full assortment of them:

Yes, maybe she should have found a brown print shirt, or a shirt that had her shade of green in it. But she wasn’t going to miss the chance to get that vest! One does not have to fill in any wardrobe template in any particular order – there are no rules:

Her outfit options are simple, but have a feeling of softness and luxurious texture that’s pretty appealing:

I love the simplicity of this wardrobe, and the important role that her accent colors are going to play. What an interesting woman she must be…

love,

Janice

p.s. Ten years ago, we based the daily wardrobe on a ceramic figurine! It was a simple navy core with pink, soft blue and white…

This is such a pretty wardrobe thus far! I love the serenity of it…frankly, I don’t think the rust vest needs to “match” perfectly with anything. I can see it blending with any of the other pieces. This is a definitely a nice wardrobe for people who are in academia also…it is quietly professional.

My one caveat is that I’m just not a fan of this shade of green. It’s a bit too hospital mint” for me. But, it’s an easy swap for a deeper shade of teal or a lighter turquoise. But, that’s just me…I know this would look gorgeous on most other heroines. Also…ivory shoes in winter? Not so much the ‘white shoes after Labor Day’ rule for me, but more of the “How do I keep these gorgeous loafers clean in the sand and salt?”. However, this is a great opportunity to personalize and find what works for you! I saw these teal Reeboks recently and was sorely tempted…but they’d look great with this wardrobe. https://www.reebok.com/products/reebok-classic-leather-shoes-retro-teal-retro-teal-chalk-132144?srsltid=AfmBOooZQ4ua3oPFfZTTsrQoksc1jl-KEeIwZY4vv2KgpXZLCSwNwxZI

Oh yes, I love wearing petrol blue with brown in winter and turquoise and cream in summer.

      I love these earrings.

Not for me personally, I shudder to think what any of those ivory pieces would look like after just one wearing, but I love the “feel” of it. This will just be a lovely wardrobe.

That’s how I feel, too. I live on the Maine coast—and ivory pants and shoes? Not going to happen. Mud, salt, dirt and sand would be all over my pants, just from getting out of the car.

The vest isn’t available—no price and they want you to get on a wait list.

On the Alex Mill website a pop-up with the price appears when you click on the item. It’s £105.

Interesting! It didn’t show up when using my iPad, but now that I’m on my desktop I can see a price of $100 US. However, it’s still not available and they offer a “get notified” option, so not currently available in US, at least.

They’ve sold out, but Alex Mill will indeed restock things and contact you when it’s back. Maybe the only place I’ve ever actually done that!
      hugs,

I’ve ordered from them Well made clothes. The wait time was not horrible.

This is a soothing painting. I think anyone’s stress levels would ease contemplating this.

I only have two pairs of taupe trousers; no brown so grey or navy will sub. I do love the green colour; I wish I could find it in the shops. It is a good idea to have a neutral in different types of top which expands options depending on the weather.

I’m going through my scarves at the moment and debating whether to keep the square ones. Once you’ve folded it up, most of the pattern disappears. I don’t have long hair to tie up. If I attach it to a bag, I’d probably get it stuck in the zip. There’s hardly anything to tie round my neck. Having the V at the front isn’t me.

So pretty, if I had to start over, I would most likely go this route. It is so nice to see brown back again these last few years after being almost non existent, at least in my world.

This is a lovely color palette, and so very close to mine!
(However, I also have some light green and pink and blue with grey options to keep myself from getting bored, and they work with my white hair and pale skin tone also.)
Can we possibly pull a bit of dark blue denim from the headband in the painting?
    I can’t imagine a wardrobe without jeans!

I like the wardrobe choices but I can’t be the only person who looks at that sweater and instantly tastes Sucrets! They are cherry flavored now, but they used to be horrible and just that color green. I know because they really worked, so I sucked on a lot of them in my youth!

I LOVE this heroine & her wardrobe.
I think of the green as being a forest, pine, spruce “green” or bottle green, like the old coke cola bottles; I have this color perfectly in mind!!!! I’ll have to check the rust color & the garment b/c I don’t usually do vests.
    Thanks you soooo much, Janice!

Made me consider if i have a texture palette. I don’t think the bag works. It isn’t real crocodile, but it is literally bumpy and I find it off putting and not consistent with the warm and welcoming theme. I like the theme.
