Avoiding Light Colors Start With Art - A Forest by Leon Spilliaert

Avoiding Light Colors? Start With Art – A Forest by Leon Spilliaert

August 18, 2025

Ah, for the winter holidays, our heroine has plans to visit friends and family, with a particular fun twist - all of these families seem to be the ones with small children!

Now, our heroines loves children, and will spend much of her long weekend on the floor, playing with new toys, reading books for the 37th time, and just generally cuddling sleepy, grumpy tots...

But as always, her packing starts here:

She wants soft things. Dark things that show spots a bit less. a necklace or two that can be quickly tucked into a collar, to avoid the inquisitive fingers of the wee babies in the crowd...

She's even packing a pair of shorts; she spends a lot of time on the floor...

This wardrobe is darker than ... View the Post

Don't Want to Pack Black Start With Art - A Forest by Leon Spilliaert

Don’t Want to Pack Black? Start With Art – A Forest by Leon Spilliaert

August 15, 2025

Back with our heroine and her multi-faceted wardrobe, based upon this painting. Today's color palette is the one shown here, in which she eschews black and concentrates on the other colors.

Maybe your family thinks your wear too much black? Maybe it just doesn't feel right for a particular holiday, like Thanksgiving? Maybe you just want to try something different?

Of course you're not going to quit wearing black just because it bugs your sister, but you can be a bit flexible just to keep the peace. Especially if you get to wear this luscious shade of green!

Packing in this wardrobe is always so easy - enough ivory to dress up if the occasion warrants (maybe take everyone out for dinner some night, so you ... View the Post

A Warm Color, Classic Palette for Fall Start With Art - a Forest by Leon Spilliaert

A Warm Color, Classic Palette for Fall? Start With Art – a Forest by Leon Spilliaert

August 13, 2025

Our ongoing inspiration:

Our heroine from Monday has another trip planned; she's going to her college Homecoming!

She's not planning to attend any of the more formal, dressy activities; her agenda is more the football game, and then hanging out at the home of one of her friends who stayed in the city after graduation. Much sitting around, eating, talking, and laughing is what she has in mind...

But she still wants to look nice, and she really wants to have that autumn feel when she gets dressed. Time for some brown!

Her color palette for the upcoming festivities is this:

She starts with a lovely brown tee shirt, her black cardigan, and a different pair of black pants - somewhat warmer than the linen ... View the Post

Want a Number of Color Palette Possibilities? Start With Art – A Forest by Leon Spilliaert

August 11, 2025

Our heroine travels quite a bit - visiting friends, visiting family, vacationing, working... And she wants to start packing with a plan; she's inspired by this:

She immediately can see a color palette that would pay homage to this painting - three neutrals, with the green as an accent. Or maybe the green can be a neutral too? There are lots of possibilities:

As heroines tend to do, she keep thinking! She realizes first off that she's really not in the mood to pack brown right now. Maybe she doesn't own any yet, or maybe her brown clothes are heavier, and not suited to her upcoming trip.

So she can clearly see that she can still assemble a lovely palette without the brown.

And then she thinks ... View the Post

Dressing in Harmony With Nature; Start With Art – Rolling Hills by Peter Schmidt

Dressing in Harmony With Nature; Start With Art – Rolling Hills by Peter Schmidt

July 30, 2025

I could easily see using this painting next year for the "6 Paintings - Twelve Months". This is the kind of palette I could see committing to forever...

Our colors are all neutrals, but WHAT neutrals! There's no way to make these colors clash...

She's Ready for Hot Weather! It's been a while since it's been truly warm where she lives, so when she realized that she'd better visit her mother for a few days, she was more than happy to do so!

For the flight down, she's going to dress rather warmly - heaven knows that one seldom is on an airplane that isn't nippy...

These are the easiest trips - she can always borrow what she forgets, and anything that she wears will be greeting with "oh honey, you look ... View the Post

Need a Subtle, Foolproof Travel Capsule Wardrobe Start With Art - L'Encens by Fernand Khnopff

Need a Subtle, Foolproof Travel Capsule Wardrobe? Start With Art – L’Encens by Fernand Khnopff

July 25, 2025

Oh, how I admire this painting!

You could easily shop with these colors in mind: warm but NOT reddish browns, very muted olive, ivory and cream...

Subtle She's got really vivid coloring. Her hair is every shade of orange and brown, that all mixes together in glorious, gorgeous auburn. Her eyes are cool brown, with highlights of olive, and a color that's almost taupe. Silvery? Hard to describe, that's for sure!

So she dresses in the most subtle colors, so she will always outshine what she's wearing...

Once the weather starts to cool down, she takes a couple of four day trips - leaving Monday, coming home on Friday. Just enough time to see friends, and art, and eat some good food!

She might go to New ... View the Post

Love Primary Colors Start With 2 Scarves - Lazyjack Press and Elizabetta

Love Primary Colors? Start With 2 Scarves – Lazyjack Press and Elizabetta

June 25, 2025

Sometimes, when you're packing, it's just easier to go back to the very most basic options. That's certainly true with colors; if you're packing core is navy, red and yellow seem like perfect accents!

So let's start with these two scarves:

Our heroine has made a few changes to her navy wardrobe core. This part of your packing can be as conservative or as relaxed as you need, of course!

To go with our red floral scarf, our heroine has chosen a timeless linen camp shirt, and a striped tee! She might wear the scarf with the striped tee shirt, if she's feeling in that mood.

Her yellow clothes make a sort of twinset, with the matching tee shirt and cardigan. And yes, she's got two completely ... View the Post

Like the Idea of Your Painting, But Having Trouble With the Colors Start With Art - Pink and Black by Ed Clark

Like the Idea of Your Painting, But Having Trouble With the Colors? Start With Art – Pink and Black by Ed Clark

June 23, 2025

Another conference? (She did this before.) As the trailing spouse? What an absolutely horrible term...

But she's going, and she will be beautiful. She has the best inspiration; this is one of her favorite paintings, by her favorite artist:

But she's feeling uncertain... her favorite pink clothes are NOT this shade of pink. Does this matter?

After thinking for a few minutes, our heroine realized that unless she carried a big reproduction of the painting around with her and pointed out to people how badly the shades of pink clashed, nobody would ever know. She can put it out of her mind, if she tries!

So she's preparing for the "weird meet and greet/maybe go out to dinner with people they know" arrival. The ... View the Post

Love Pink and Green Start With Two Scarves Elizabetta and Jessie Zhao New York

Love Pink and Green? Start With Two Scarves: Elizabetta and Jessie Zhao New York

June 18, 2025

Say your trip with your navy wardrobe core went well, including what you packed! But you'd like to try some different accent colors...

How about using these two scarves as your inspiration? Of course you NEVER have to wear scarves if you don't like them, but you can always use the images of them, and the colors included, to help you focus your travel capsule wardrobe:

To keep our comparison consistent, and to actually reflect how normal women wear their clothes over and over (as the planet asks us to do!), I'm using the same navy core that we used on Friday:

Our heroine found the perfect shade of pink at Lands' End, so she grabbed two different but very compatible garments. And her necklace is ... View the Post

Want a Touch of Brown with Your Chambray Tullynally Castle Corridor & Window by Hector McDonnell

Want a Touch of Brown with Your Chambray? Tullynally Castle Corridor & Window by Hector McDonnell

June 16, 2025

She goes away a LOT of weekends in the summer. Many of her friends have places on lakes or the seashore, or in a forest near a lake... And she must be an excellent guest, because she's always invited somewhere!

This is one of her favorite paintings:

She always feels like the window at the end of the hall is crooked!

Her colors that she's isolated from the painting are shown here; she doesn't include the tiny touches of red, but she does wear a good red lipstick sometimes...

She usually leaves for her friend's home straight from work - she's close to the train station when she's in her office! She dresses simply, but with a cardigan to battle the office air-conditioning.

She doesn't ... View the Post

Pack and Not Think Again About Clothes Start With Art Donna Andrzejewski - Dante's View Abstraction

Pack and Not Think Again About Clothes? Start With Art: Donna Andrzejewski – Dante’s View Abstraction

May 28, 2025

Yes, this is a photograph. I consider excellent photographs to be art! And since today's heroine is a photographer, this seems like the perfect work of art for her:

Our heroine wants to pack and then not think about her clothes again! She will check the weather each morning of the long weekend photography trip, but she's MUCH more concerned with her camera gear than she is with clothes...

AND, she wants to be pretty "blend into the background" of the area of high desert where she's going. It will probably be cool much of the time - she's not going until autumn - but she will want layers in case it warms up.

All in all, these are perfect colors for her:

She's comfortable driving out in her lightest colored ... View the Post

Like to Change Your Colors With the Seasons Start With Art - Blue Level by Lee Krasner

Like to Change Your Colors With the Seasons? Start With Art – Blue Level by Lee Krasner

May 23, 2025

You often tell me that you don't much want to wear brown in the summer time, but conversely you're not really comfortable wearing bright colors in the winter. (it feels too '80s, for many of us!)

So what if your favorite painting offered you options?

You can assemble your color palette (I could have certainly included a touch of orange in here, couldn't I?), but just plain and simply ignore one or more of your colors when you plan for a season!

These are the obvious colors that come from this painting - I can't decide if the three vertical stripes are a shade of brown, or maybe plum...

This heroine is packing for an event - I believe she told me it was a first communion, followed by a church picnic. Great ... View the Post
