Dressy Weekend Start with a Scarf - The Raven Garden of Happiness by June Hunter

Dressy Weekend? Start with a Scarf – The Raven Garden of Happiness by June Hunter

March 22, 2024

It's a dressy weekend - the weather will probably be warm... but there is always a chance of a cool snap!

But how to be dressy without bringing everything you own? Well, a tight color palette and planning ahead is always the way to go.

And how about starting with black and pretty accents?

Before you go down this path, you want to be ABSOLUTELY certain that wearing black isn't a problem. This wardrobe is actually designed for someone who's a prominent figure in a wedding, at which the bridesmaids will be wearing black dresses; I think she's okay with this!

She's wearing a very "normal" travel outfit - closed-toe shoes, and a cardigan for the inevitable freezing air conditioning... but she's rocking ... View the Post

CREATE A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY “DAME AU CHAPEAU” BY NATALIA GONTCHAROVA

Evaluating a Wardrobe: A Year of “Dame au Chapeau” by Natalia Gontcharova

December 17, 2018

Ah, this heroine... The unintentionally conspicuous college professor who never seems to fade into the background! That's just the way some people are..

Her favorite painting? This unique beauty:

From this, she was able to derive the most uncommon of color palettes for her wardrobe, as well a few phrases to help her keep focused:

Back in January, she traveled (for reasons we still don't know!) with this very unconventional travel capsule wardrobe:

When she was away for a long weekend at a symposium, she packed the following travel wardrobe. She didn't plan to speak or be on any panels, but I suspect she was called upon to contribute...

She's also been invited to other schools to speak to ... View the Post

A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY DAME AU CHAPEAU BY GONTCHAROVA, REVISITED FOR AUTUMN 2018

Dame au Chapeau by Gontcharova, Revisited for Autumn 2018

October 22, 2018

Ah, the inadvertently conspicuous college professor... She made a short trip (which we never discussed...) back in January, and then to another symposium in April. Her professional qualifications get her invited to all sorts of places to speak to classes - in July she got out of town for a couple of days to hang out with summer-school students! This Invitation is Different... Really different. Negotiating the final details under which she will be a guest lecturer at that university for A YEAR!!!

She's qualified. She's eager to do it. But she's got to pack!

Deep breath... Focus on the art that is her favorite, and that serves as her personal style guide:

She knows that it's going to be cold on the train, so ... View the Post

A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE INSPIRED BY DAME AU CHAPEAU BY NATALIA S GONTCHAROVA

Dame au Chapeau by Natalia S. Gontcharova Revisited for Summer 2018

July 9, 2018

Remember our inadvertently very visible college professor? In January she was all over campus sporting a gold cardigan - or a hot pink one, and then in April she was off to a symposium in a gorgeous gold suede jacket...

Well, she's visiting another university to speak to a graduate school class... She seems to have made it onto everybody's list of "favorite visiting professor!"

Her wardrobe inspiration is unusual, but seems to work well for her:

She knows that the morning she drives downstate to the campus, she's going directly into her presentation, so she wants to dress for business, as well as for icy air conditioning!

She's not quite sure what else in on her agenda. They've asked her to stay for 2 ... View the Post

Dame au Chapeau by Natalia S. Gontcharova Revisiting for Spring 2018

April 17, 2018

She's not a quiet, retiring type. She doesn't meant to be conspicuous, but it just seems to be her way! Maybe because she takes her style cues from this painting?

The last time the traveled - just after the winter holidays - she packed a simple, but eye-catching, travel capsule wardrobe:

She's off for a weekend symposium.... She's not presenting, so she plans to just sit back and listen...

She's packing what she considers to be the bare minimum for the weekend:

She loves the way that her wardrobe reflects her personal tastes; it's not something everyone would enjoy, but it gives her endless pleasure, and occasional real delight!

She loves the options of wearing a suit, or ... View the Post

The Twelve Art Works of Christmas!

Merry Christmas to all of those who are celebrating today, and a warm and wonderful day to everyone!

Today I've got 12 works of art for you - 11 paintings and 1 pretty amazing photograph, along with color palettes, and a sense of how the colors might be made to work in a wardrobe.

I've chosen almost all "modern" works of art - for what we do here on The Vivienne Files, I need to have a relatively limited color palette. Paintings that are completely realistic tend to have every color of the rainbow in them, and THAT would make a carefully edited wardrobe almost impossible!

So, if you have time, and if you have an opinion (or 12!), tell me if you'd like to see any of these developed into a wardrobe. If you've a preference for warm ... View the Post

Building a Capsule Wardrobe by Starting with Art: White Center by Mark Rothko

December 14, 2014   Not colors for the faint of heart, but another example of how combining warm and cool colors is not just possible, but potentially a striking and memorable personal style statement.
