Build a Capsule Wardrobe Starting with a scarf: Hermès Egypte in bright green

I received a question about what could be worn with a specific Hermes scarf – one with a lot of brown, beige and camel tones in the center, and a bright green border.  My suggestions include all of the shades of brown, gold, white, and navy, which is always so nice with bright green…And a lot of these clothes come from J. Crew.  I’ve been spending a LOT of time lately in the local J. Crew store, gift shopping, and I’ve found that they stock a large number of nice-quality basic garments.  Maybe not to your taste, or your budget, but certainly they are good “thought-starters”.

Have a lovely weekend!

Check out Mai Tai's Picture Book. Vivienne has thoughtfully placed a link to it on her blog roll. You will find all the instructions for which you could wish there.

What a clever idea– building the wardrobe around the accessory! I hope you do more of these with other accessories. I love the recent focus you've given to accessories–that's where I'm now concentrating my purchases. Do have any thoughts on summer handbags?

I love this post! Very helpful. Here is a link to a Hermes scarf I hope to own: http://www.malleries.com/authentic-hermes-carre-les-parisiens-silk-scarf-i-28735-s-278.html

Would you consider creating a wardrobe to go with it? Many thanks. That would be SO helpful—and fun.

Love love love. Thank you so much for doing this post. It gives me some great ideas for colours and matching.

Funnily enough, I was just seeking out a nice basic navy sweater and purchased that exact one from J Crew yesterday! (They have free international shipping on at the moment for anyone else not in the US).

    Especially love the yellow outfit.

And now I'm trying to hunt down that gorgeous hazelnut DVF dress, any idea where it's still available?

    Thanks again!

I love JCrew and all the pieces you put together look wonderful. Great choices, especially thought the sequined skirt with the fun, but casual sandals was a great combination,

What a lovely idea: build a wardrobe around ann Hermes scarf. Can you consider to do it again, with other scarf?

Sure! You can either email me a photograph of the scarf ([email protected]), or leave a comment with the scarf name and color. I think a scarf makes a great starting point for choosing outfits…

Vivienne – and what should an European wear for one week vacation in New York in August?

    Clueless me

That sequined skirt kicks it! Many women tell me Hermes scarves are stuffy, and I disagree… thanks for illustrating the point. Of course they can be 'lady' with a sheath but I like the navy capris, scarf worn as belt if you can, or tied to a bag when it't hot. That's the one drawback, the 35 inch carré is *warm*.

[email protected]:53 am, NYC will be a sticky steambath in August; a skirt or light dress is more comfortable and versatile than pants or shorts (which non-tourists do wear, in dressier versions). Am sure Vivienne will guide you.

Could this be the scarf that Megan was carrying last night's episode of Mad Men?

It's very, very similar but I think the one Megan had seemed to have wheels or similar design in the centre rather than the Egypte pattern. (See here for a glimpse: http://www.youknowyoulovefashion.com/storage/madmen/season5/0506/0506Megan09.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1335329525113)

I got really excited seeing one so similar on her though! I love her style.

That scarf is Les Becanes, released in the late 50's. It's impressive that when they chose to use an Hermes, they were careful enough to get one that was authentically of that era!

Thanks for scaring up the photograph.
      big hug,

These are wonderful outfits. They would go so well with my red hair. I will have to seek out a green scarf for the fall. I really admire your style.
