Start with a Scarf: Mumbai Paisley silk scarf – Echo

November 17, 2021

Yes – ANOTHER SCARF GIVE-AWAY!

This lovely object is 36 inches square, and SO lovely… Leave a comment and it might be yours!

Creativity Requires Discipline

At least that’s what she believes. Years ago, when she committed to designing jewelry, she made the very startling choice to limit her work to silver, gold, black onyx and pearls. Well, she will use mother-of-pearl if it is truly ivory…

scarf – Echo

Over time, her wardrobe came to reflect the same colors that she cherished in her work…

scarf – Echo

When it’s time to go to the annual One of a Kind show in Chicago, she knows exactly how she will pack!

Cardigan-blazer – J.Crew; earrings – Gemondo; tee shirt – L.L.Bean; watch – Breda; corduroy pants – L.L.Bean; scarf – Echo; boots – Splendid; bag – J.Crew

She deliberately packs a column of charcoal grey, as well as wears her black column. These small choices can make getting dressed so easy:

Grey pearl earrings – Chan Luu; gold huggie hoops – Talbots; square silk scarf – Treasure & Bond; charcoal heather turtleneck – Lands’ End; pearl pendant – Lele Sadoughi; hat – Brixton; Fair Isle sweater – J.Crew; bracelets – Chico’s; ivory v-neck sweater – J.Crew; plaid shirt – J.Crew; charcoal slim pants – L.L.Bean; desert sand chinos – J.Crew; gloves – UGG; boots – J.Crew

As she gets ready to pack, she realizes that her wardrobe does indeed look a great deal like her jewelry, when on display. She is completely delighted by this!

As she points out to her customers and friends, these four colors – in jewelry or in clothing – give you all of the options that you really need:

Why do I suspect that her closet at home might look quite a bit like this?

ivory tee shirt – Lands’ End; waffle knit tee – L.L.Bean; gray heather tee – Lands’ End; heather sand turtleneck – J.Crew; plaid shirt – Paige; camel cashmere sweater – J.Crew; Fair Isle sweater – J.Crew; gray v-neck sweater – Caslon; gray cashmere cardigan – L.L.Bean; stone pants – L.L.Bean; gray knit cords – L.L.Bean; skirt – Tommy Hilfiger

Wouldn’t you love to meet this designer? Imagine when she does a collection of her interpretation of the 4 Seasons, or of the 4 Elements, using just her 4 materials….

love,

Janice

p.s. Six years ago, our heroine was building her wardrobe around “Echo and Narcissus” by John William Waterhouse. Pre-Raphaelite painting is ALWAYS inspiring…

I love the look of calmness about all the outfits. I fear they would wash me out though. I am adding gray to my wardrobe (I’ve worn it on the bottom, just beginning to add tops) as I’ve turned gray, but I always want a bit of color near my face or I disappear. I think you used the same Fair Isle sweater from J. Crew on Monday? I am not finding that colorway when I look for it. Just a warmer brighter Cerise Peony and an Ivory Deep Blush – which is not what I’m seeing here? Looks more blue/gray? Anyway, thanks for these posts, always love Mon,Wed,Fri. Sometimes its all about figuring out what I would differently for my personal needs/colors.

Lovely combination of warm and cool colours in this capsule which I do like, but as a ‘light/cool summer’, I think the scarf could adapt to a capsule with mid to light rose beige instead of the camel, dark charcoal or blackberry instead of black or dark brown and I would also change the mid grey to a taupe grey with one or two soft white pieces. My jewellery would also be silver with some polished stones that you would see on a beach.

Thanks for providing more mid-week inspiration. It’s a lovely scarf. I have debated over something similar but wondered if it would look too wan on me. It would work with all the grey I wear and my ash brown hair now has natural grey and white highlights at the side. My hairdresser tells me that it is still quite brown at the back.

I’ve not yet had the courage to put a grey jumper and taupe (my soft grey-brown) trousers together but this would bring it together nicely with an ivory top. Just the colour scheme for a grey day in the UK when wearing any accent colour just seems too much. Or for those days when you want to merge into the background. Though today is a lovely bright sunny day!

The look back from November 17 2015 is great too and if fellow readers wish to find the associated look back, it’s dated November 11 2015. There Janice has provided a detailed description of the steps to building a Whatever’s Clean wardrobe – such great analysis. Read the two together to see the difference between the light and dark wardrobes using the same scarf. Amazing.

You can wear almost any style but everything has to be in proportion to balance your bust and hips – v-necks, peplums, wrap-styles, short jackets and tops that finish at or just below your waist, high-waisted and/or loose trousers. Wear fitted clothes that emphasise your waist. Wear a belt or have detail at the waist. Dresses should be fitted from bust to waist, at least. Hope that helps.

I would love to see this wardrobe accessorized with some mixed gold/silver pieces as it’s another warm + cool capsule…and yes, I just like the mixed metal look.

For myself, I would jettison the warm camel (though not the ivory) and substitute a semi-neutral/colored neutral like teal or burgundy. The way the capsule is built from neutral columns makes this kind of tweaking very easy!

Until I discovered your blog several years ago, I did not wear scarves, well except wooly ones wrapping my face in bitterly cold weather! Enter a trip to Paris then to Rome, and scarves in every stall along the Seine, a little shop in a village outside of Rome, well, let me just say a few beauties came home with me and I wear them all the time. This beauty caught my attention immediately. The colors, they are me. My wardrobe has evolved into mostly neutrals with a colorful pop now and then and it serves me well because I don’t fuss when dressing, everything (for the most part) will compliment the other. Quite frankly, that is thanks to you. I am eyeing the J. Crew camel sweater too, oh my!

I’m so very inspired by the places you use to set a wardrobe.
I am reluctantly slouching into my mid fifties, from decades of being the “hippie girl.”
My silhouette might look different from what you show (I love boho and A-line skirts, for example. Trousers are for work only), but your advice is keeping me from looking like Cruising Granny.
I am a put together Granny Woodstock instead. Maybe I can ride life out on this look. :)

Long-time lurker, coming out of the woodwork here because that scarf could have been designed for my own favourite winter hat!! (It’s a very plain wool fedora: hatband is black, or rather what some hosiery companies would call “Nearly Black”; crown is ivory/cream; and brim (both upper- and under-side) is a medium charcoal-grey).

I love the hat in today’s wardrobe, though. Awfully tempting…

Beautiful colors. 4 neutral straight from my closet, since many years. I think they are equally great in winter and summer. And I think they look just as beautiful for women of all ages. After years of wearing mostly black now I prefer lighter colours but I wonder can we use sometimes black as an accent colour? I would love to see a more formal and “dressy” proposal in these colors. Janice, I read and love your heroines’ stories, since years. Now in distant Warsaw, in Poland, they are moments of retreat for me, as a doctor in pandemic times. And inspiration, such as this wonderful scarf. And pearls, for me it is “comfort” jewelry. I wear it always in difficult, demanding moments, for support.

I’ve been following TVF for a while now, studying the different approaches you take, learning & gleaning from your “Everything” snapshots. Slowly culling all those purchase mistakes… that just don’t have much mileage. AND, breathing a sigh of relief when yet another beautiful scarf or bracelet isn’t available in colors that work for me …. because then I keep focused on building the columns and core pieces. But, oh, I do have a weakness for scarves!!
