Start with Art: White Ship by John Singer Sargent

April 23, 2015

That time of year is fast approaching when the lucky ones among us get all kinds of great invitations for weekends. If you have friends with a lake house, you know what I mean – lots of time in the water  – in a canoe, a kayak, or an inner tube! Chilly evenings, cooking out, laughing ’til your sides hurt… The last thing you want to worry about is what to pack!

Sargent’s painting put me very much in the right mood for this scenario:

White Ship by John Singer Sargent

Maybe you’re driving to the lake, taking the train and being met, or taking the Jitney, but under any circumstances, you want to look nice – casual, but still pretty, with attention to detail.

Hammered ball earrings – Nest, tan pants – P.A.R.O.S.H. , sleeveless top – Betty Barclay, cardigan – Nougat London, multi-stone necklace – Marco Bicego, sandals – Adam Tucker, pedicure polish – Butter London (color is called Trollop), tote bag – Mary and Marie

Two swimsuits might seem like overdoing it, but if you’re going to wear one for twelve hours a day, it’s nice to have options! A hooded cardigan comes in handy when evening sets in and the temperatures drop…

Dress – Toast, swimsuit – Speedo, plaid shirt – L.L.Bean, zip-front cabled sweater – L.L.Bean, tan shorts – L.L.Bean, flip flops – Havaianas, sleeveless linen shirt – Uniqlo, print swimsuit – Shan, blue shorts – L.L.Bean

Do you get to take weekend breaks away from home during the summer? What kind of wardrobe would you like to see for your getaway?

love,
Janice

I love the Uniglo swimsuit. The link didn't work and I wasn't able to find it on their website :( Maybe you did me a favor, as I am trying to not buy ready made ;)

The swimsuit is actually from Shan (the brands come after the item), and given the price of the beautiful thing, you're not going to buy it; you can make one much better done for a fraction of the price!

Love the painting and the color theme! Now I'm daydreaming about endless lakeside vacations in my color-coordinated swimsuit.
    I don't think I even own a swimsuit…

Me too! Nail polish is such a great way to finish off an outfit or add a pop of color.

I ditto the comment above re the nail polish, its always in the details!! Thank you for using my suggestion. I love this painting because it makes me think summer. And, this is another ensemble that I could happily own and use!!!

You are so wise to include two base colors and two accents. I recently spent a week away using black with purple and light grey. Looked great every day (if I do say so myself) but got so sick of black!! My problem is shoes — don't like the same shoes with pants that I do with skirts and dresses, so end up restricting base colors to get the shoes down to two.

What colors people pick out from paintings is always interesting. Instead of the blue/cream/beige/orange, I see bright blue/sky blue/cream/green.

Seriously, a nail polish called "trollop"? I don't know what the equivalent term is in American English. Can see the brand likes outre names…:-)

Maybe they accidentally left the E off the end of it. ;-)

This is exactly the type of activity I do — casual, outdoorsy, active. And since I live in New England, I know all about cool summer nights. So, I would suggest an addition to this fabulous set — a pair of little sneakers (like Keds) or espadrilles. Sitting around a campfire or hanging out on the cabin porch, exposed toes can get chilly.
