November 2026 – Building a Wardrobe Starting With Winter Cottonwoods by Georgia O’Keeffe

November 4, 2026

Our heroine spends a lot of time looking at her favorite painting – obviously! One day, she shared it with one of her closest friends…

STRETCHING THE BOUNDARIES OF YOUR PALETTE

“I recognize all of the soft, muted colors that you usually wear. But have you ever considered wearing that copper color that’s tucked up against the trunk of the tree on the left?”

Well…

This is our heroine’s current wardrobe and accessories. Muted is definitely the way I would describe it!

Her friend’s comment stuck in her head.

Then, she was invited to attend – and to be a presenter – at a very large national landscape arts convention… For which she will need one “nice” outfit.

This isn’t a super-dressy crowd, but for the big dinner, they request that everyone wear something “dressy business”.

And, of course, the winter holidays are coming!

Then, she spots this:

heather rich camel cashmere sweater – J.Crew; earrings – Swarovski; ginger silk shirt – Eileen Fisher; dark camel corduroy pants – Banana Republic Factory; handbag – Staud; ginger silk skirt – Eileen Fisher; bronze ballet flats – Steve Madden

Well, of course these things didn’t just fall out of the sky in front of her looking like this, but close!

She broke into a sweat when she bought the Eileen Fisher things, knowing that she will wear them a lot made it just a bit easier to splurge like this!

Please note – Eileen Fisher clothes are available in a lot of places. Keep your eyes open and you might find things on sale… and the EileenFisherrenew.com site is HER company selling HER clothing, second-hand! It’s a treasure-trove of delight…

Yes, these clothes stand out in her wardrobe:

But her new purchases don’t start an absolute rebellion in her closet – they just add a little warm corner to the general softer and cooler things:

Here’s a real break from how our wardrobes usually work – this heroine brought her new things home with NO IDEA how she would wear them – except together as four outfits…

She had faith that any color that Georgia O’Keeffe felt was worthy of inclusion in a painting would also be worthy of being in her wardrobe! So she started to experiment:

It’s amazing how a little bit of time trying on your own clothes can make you feel more comfortable with a new purchase!

And true whappage should never be ignored. Not necessarily obeyed, but at least considered.

Her friend? “I’ve never noticed how your freckles absolutely GLOW when you smile…”

love,
Janice

If you would like to see how our heroine got from her first four pieces of clothing to the wardrobe she has now, all of the posts about her are here;  Christmas Eve Preview, January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October

p.s. Ten years ago, we started with the original Common Wardrobe, and added soft rose, green and grey from a beautiful floral painting by Maurice Prendergast.

I see that the Banana Republic corduroys also come in a “fungi” (taupe) shade—which would probably be my first choice—but the heroine already owns three pairs of trousers in that color. It’s wonderful to step slightly outside one’s comfort zone and to seek advice from a good friend:) PS. And copper also goes well with grey…
