February 2026 – Building a Wardrobe Based on Winter Cottonwoods by Georgia O’Keeffe

February 4, 2026

For just a moment, let’s enjoy this calm, restful painting, full of depths if you look behind the trees and into the distance…

Our heroine, lover of all wild plants, has chosen this painting to inspire her wardrobe. She’s a lover of the “nuts and bolts” of nature – the roots, the cold bare stems of winter, the starkness of the branches silhouetted against the frozen sky…

At the end of January, our heroine had assembled the most gentle and subtle of capsule wardrobes:

Our heroine had no definite plans for when she would add bright flower yellow to her wardrobe, so when she saw this cashmere sweater, she had NO reason to hesitate. And then she finds the darkest brown cardigan too! While the fox scarf might be a bit dark for her wardrobe, there was no way she was going to resist it. With her new corduroy pants and dark sweater, it’s stunning…

Gold cashmere sweater – Alex Mill; earrings – Joiana Jewelry; wool vest – Alex Mill; smoky willow wood corduroy pants – J.Crew; fox silk scarf – Silk&Soul; smoky wood cashmere cardigan – J.Crew; loafers – Franco Sarto

She takes images of her new clothes and plugs them into her Seven Cluster wardrobe template. Maybe the vest was a wild card, but it’s (1) a classic style, (2) a perfect color for her wardrobe – she already has pants that match it, and (3) IT’S WOOL!!! Not polyester fleece. She’s smitten…

Her “new” 12-piece wardrobe looks a lot bigger than an 8-piece wardrobe! Like 50% bigger! (numbers make me happy…)

At this stage in building a wardrobe, even small additions can have a lot of impact.

With the addition of four garments, the number of possible outfits skyrockets…

Ah, I can see the appeal of these soft neutrals with an occasional bright floral accent…

Earlier installments of this wardrobe can be found here: Christmas Eve Preview, January.

love,
Janice

p.s. Ten years ago, a beautiful hydrangea print scarf inspired a wardrobe in navy, grey, and shades of pink. Our heroine is getting ready to relocate her family…

p.p.s. If you’re shopping, and you would like the commission that you pay on your purchase to go to me, you can go to this link and find a list of retailers who give me a teeny kickback for any purchase you make. Please note that these links have ALL CHANGED, because my original commission fulfillment company is going out of business.

Yes, I’m re-doing hundreds of links, in my mythical leisure!

I envy her sweater collection, the perfect assortment. Let’s hope she get a few more tops to go under them soon. I love the colours and would happily wear this wardrobe, but muted browns do not look the best on me.

    Hi Janet,
Love this painting. Just to let you know I purchased the J Crew jeans you took to Paris through your link before Christmas. I love them which is just as well as I didn’t fancy returning them from Ireland. You have great taste.

I love this group of clothing, and it will look good on me now. I have colored my hair for years and I think it might be time to let my grey hair shine…I wonder how much that is going to impact the colors of clothing/makeup I wear? Any comment/ideas are welcome!

Thanks for the invitation to comment, Karen! I’m a “cool summer” who formerly had very dark brown hair. It’s been white for about 15 years now.

Changes: I look best in lighter and brighter clothes. Navy and dark brown, former favorites, overpower me now, but I can wear camel and certain shades of orange and yellow which didn’t flatter me before.

      Have fun trying new looks!

Hi Karen, going grey definitely impacted my colours. I was always a winter but could wear warm colours well too. Only oatmeal was really ghastly and a mango yellow. Once I went grey, actually totally silver, I looked more sick in most warm colours! Also had a vision of pastels and grey being good but in reality I looked washed out. So in a nutshell my cool coloring became more dominant. I think it is different for everyone though but safe to say you can expect some change.

I’ve been all grey since COVID. I’ve found a brighter blush makes a the biggest difference. As for clothing I still wear the same but find brighter reds often feel too much while deeper oranges sparkle. Looking at today’s collection here I am reminded most of my off whites oatmeal type colors tend to sit in the closet.

Your coloring before going gray will determine how much your wardrobe and makeup are impacted. We blondes are lucky…in my case, going gray returned me to the coloring of my childhood, so not much transition. Those with Winter coloring transition to salt-and-pepper or silver hair, which is nice. But those with Autumn coloring have the most challenging transition such as redheads and those with warm, brown hair..

With that said…a former coworker with a rough complexion colored her gray hair a dark brown but then lost it due to chemo. For a short while, she let her gray hair grow out and I noticed how much softer her features were and that certain colors worked better, others less so. As we age, the gray (or in my case silver/gold) hair has a softening effect which is flattering, less harsh. The lighter color creates a halo effect around the face. Which is part of the appeal of being a blonde.

I so wish I could wear this wardrobe. The loveliness is undeniable! The look back confirms what I have always known, but recently rediscovered; adding a bit of pink to navy is luscious.

A tealength cream skirt w golden brown flowers on it jumped off the rack at me yesterday, & then i clicked on today’s post… & looked out the window to see my golden willow’s branches against the snow, punctuated by pine trees. Right. Have now shopped the closet to put together a nice collection!

Gorgeous. Serene and warm. I love it. These aren’t my colors, but for the right woman, this is dynamite. I love the neutrals and would gladly pair them with another color. Yellow is a color I love, but it looks terrible on me.

I absolutely love this painting and the colors you are using. so so pretty. Oftentimes I just like wearing “quiet” clothes even if “louder” ones might suit my coloring better.

These colors are far from my favorite colors (I’m a blue girl) but I love how you’ve put this together. The different textures read as luxurious to me.

Waistcoats and sleeveless pullover are back in fashion so lots of choice in the shops.

Although I can’t wear yellow, this is a restful wardrobe but I’m not sure that I’d be able to wear such a limited palette all year round. This would be a mini capsule for me.
