How Can I Wear My New Scarf? Elizabeth Olwen Scarf by Echo

March 11, 2024

Sometimes, you just know that you want a scarf! (and I suspect that this one will sell our really quickly!)

scarf – Echo

Such a great design! Lovely colors! Brown and ivory neutrals…

scarf – Echo

Let’s work our way through some accent color possibilities… Starting with red! This scarf would be a nice touch as a belt? Or over the striped top – why not?

Striped top – L.L.Bean; heart earrings – Poporcelain; scarf – Echo; jeans – L.L.Bean; cotton tote bag – Masum Karimi; sneakers – Converse

Imagine this scarf around your head, or on the handle of your bag, on a hot day…

Earrings – Anni Lu; scarf – Echo; dress – Boden; sandals – Sorel; bag – Brahmin

Maybe you need something to brighten the world up a bit on a cool day…

green cashmere sweater – Lands’ End; green onyx earrings – Lila Rasa; scarf – Echo; brown cords – Lands’ End; leather jacket – Willis & Geiger; boots – Blondo

Feel like your simple blue and bone outfit needs a spark?

Knit top – Alex Mill; scarf – Echo; earrings – Golden Horn Jewellery; ecru twill pants – Alex Mill; tote – Aloha Collection; sandals – André Assous

Casual and simple doesn’t have to be boring:

Ultraviolet sweatshirt – Colourful Standard; scarf – Echo; earrings – Steven Vardi Inc.; ivory sweatpants – Zella; backpack – Brevite; sneakers – On

Maybe you just want to stick with a simple brown and ecru outfit, and put the emphasis on your accessories?

Brown tee – Lands’ End; earrings – Sterling Forever; scarf – Echo; ecru blazer – Alex Mill; pants – Alex Mill; bag – Tory Burch; flats – Trotters

I can speak from decades of experience – if you love a scarf, you will discover dozens of ways to wear it!

love,

Janice

p.s. Ten years ago, I shared with you some of my favorite books about personal style – I still have them all!

The coral, blue and purple outfits for the win with me. Which is kind of weird in that they all have the light bottom which I don’t typically wear. Have a good day everyone.

Bright color is my happy place. What a gorgeous scarf and capsule. This is one of those scarves you describe: an infinite number of looks can be created here. 😍😍😍
I’ve rediscovered chocolate brown as a neutral and it’s been so much fun pairing it with my bright, clear accents. Two nights ago I work brown satin wide-leg trousers, a crepe poly-silk blouse, gold metallic belt, beige shoes & pearl drop earrings to a banquet. Each piece can be worn so many ways, but this neutral approach really looks elegant.

In my screens, the “red” looked very orange, so I was having a hard time trying to picture myself having it anywhere near my wardrobe. But I do love all the outfits you pulled together to pair with it!
The brown and ecru and blue and white especially. Something about the white bottom and colored top is starting to really resonate with me lately. I might need to consider adding some light bottoms to my wardrobe at some point soon.
    Happy Monday!

Screens can’t be trusted!!! I was really loving this scarf and all the ways that I could use it until I read that it’s brown not black and purple not royal/cobalt and still not sure if it’s red or orange! Sad face!!!

    Janice,
What a happy feeling post ! While I could not wear most of the bright colors here
, I delight in seeing them ! The brown “ suit” would work for me , but again , my enjoyment here is seeing the saturated colors !

Paired with the red is my far-and-away favorite, though the pink is also really nice. For some reason, I’m not as thrilled with it with the other accent colors nor the chocolate brown.

This demonstrates what a great exercise it is to test combinations before you commit to the purchase; something you love that may seem very versatile might not work as well for you personally as you’d anticipate. Seeing the combinations made clear that I would really prefer the dark brown to be black or navy and the purple-blue color to be a truer blue. I would also prefer the ivory to be white, though I’d need the scarf in hand to determine whether the ivory works with white. I’d also want to check how the combinations work *on myself* because a great outfit may not be great on me.

Especially at this price point, I want the item to check all the boxes, not be a compromise that I make “because I love it” unless I am willing to hang it on the wall rather than wear it frequently myself; I wouldn’t want this to be something that just gets stored away in a drawer and taken out only a few times per year.

It’s funny because the lesson I’m drawing here is different from Janice’s observation that if you love it, you’ll find ways to wear it! I mean, I *could* create a spring/summer capsule heavy on red, bright pink, denim, and ivory/white (that I don’t wear in pants) that works well with that scarf. But if I was thinking of it as a cornerstone for a capsule with all of the colors, I’d be disappointed, despite the fact that all these colors do look good with the scarf theoretically.

I’m coming away from this with a variant on the old “trust, but verify” adage…order it because you love it, but keep it because it works superbly for the purpose you have.

This is right up my street – one neutral with several accents that could be worn together or on their own. I do find green and brown on me a bit dull so I would have to introduce a second accent to brighten it up, such as pink.

Following on from yesterday’s look back – choosing a decor style for your inspiration, I have bought Style Statement by McCarthy and LePorte, from your suggestions in today’s lookback. I was intrigued that I could look at more than just clothes for my style ethos. I managed to buy a copy in the UK for £8.99 with free postage.

I remember so clearly – my takeaway from that book was Traveling Tomboy – which I promptly translated into “La Valise de la Garconne” – my wardrobe is the suitcase of someone who lovely to wear things that look like I stole them from one of my boyfriends…
It’s a very interesting book – the examples that they show of some women and their signature phrase are illuminating!
      Enjoy! hugs,
      Janice

Great selections! My only problem with any of the ensembles is the shoes. I like my shoes to match my pants. Lighter pants are not my go
to, but are growing on me.

I loved this scarf when it came out. It looks really good folded/bunched up. I saw the neutrals as black and white. Perhaps I just assumed the obvious, perhaps monitors/lighting. Perhaps I was just distracted by the happy bright shapes. I’m curious whether any of the Echo 100 scarves have sold out? Which ones are proving to be the most popular? Is it the design, the designer or the charity that’s the draw?

I know of 3 – Shepard Fairey (which I bought), Nuno da Costa (the one with the bright colored hearts) and Dale Chihuly. I’m not surprised by any of these – Shepard Fairey and Chihuly are both pretty well-known, and the heart scarf was pretty much scarf perfection… So sometimes the artist, sometimes the art!

    Janice,
I just saw a posted copy of a painting on FB and I immediately thought of it as inspiring a color scheme for me . You’ve taught me well ! It was “ A Passing Cloud “ by Arthur Hughes . Bronze, green, off white, denim blue, with gold accents . I even saw what appeared to be a smidgen of teal out of the window . There’s even what appears to be gray for those who can wear it . I loved the elegant sheen of the fabric and the dog’s shiny coat ! Soft colors and varied rich textures — that’s me !

I assumed it would be a landscape of sorts, based on the colors. Imagine my surprise to see girl with dog by fireplace! Lovely painting, and I like what you took out of it. “A passing cloud” … perhaps the name is more a reflection of the mood of the subject, rather than a literal cloud. I wonder how people name their paintings – and I love the unexpected depth of story the name gives the painting. Thanks for sharing!

The thought I had with this post was how well this scarf (or one you love) can work in different seasons. Wonderful examples and I have found a few scarves I am moving along because they really don’t work with all my seasons. I’m not talking about warm toasty ones that are only for cold weather, but ones I can get out of my closet. I just couldn’t quite figure out why they weren’t working. Thanks for this post.

That’s interesting to me because I have scarves that I wear ONLY in certain seasons. Every Advent I look forward to pulling out my three “Christmas” or “Winter” scarves. I have some that say “Spring” to me. Others are more universal. To me it’s similar to pulling out my white cotton and linen pants and skirts for the summer- a ritual of the season.

Well you are correct I too have some Christmas/holiday scarves and a few very summery ones. I guess I’m thinking of a few that don’t fit an obvious category but don’t seem to get used on a regular basis. I like them but rarely wear them. Hoping to figure out if I use them in different seasons they are keepers. Otherwise it is time to move them along. Maybe “highlight” a different color in them for a different season.

I was loving this, until I realized that what I thought was black was really brown! I still love the idea of white or dark bottoms with colorful tops, and I also like the pink dress. Altogether, it’s a happy wardrobe for spring and summer, and I can see it going with someone on a vacation.

Interesting that the previous post seemed boring to me with the brown top that was worn a lot, but I get along great with trousers in this post.
I just need the variety from the many colors.
The colors in both posts are fantastic and those details and accessories.
By the way, I’m also in favor of the heart scarf. ❤️🩵💛🤎🤍🧡🩷💙
