She’s got to stop at the home office for a few hours, but then she’s spending the weekend in the city!
Unsure of what she wanted to pack/wear, she browsed through her saved collection of paintings on her phone, and found this:
Suddenly, she’s inspired!
Miyajima in the Rain by Tsuchiya Koitsu
She can wear black and blue to the office (she often feels like she’s been beaten by the time she gets out of there, so black and blue is appropriate!), and then pack a few things to wear for sightseeing and dining…
Scarf – Luna & Avery; earrings – Kate Spade New York; black cotton cardigan – L.L.Bean; bracelets – Paialco; blue tee shirt – Lands’ End; linen pants – Wit & Wisdom; weekender bag – Vera Bradley; crossbody purse – Hobo; flats – Schutz
She expects that it will be pretty warm, but also that she will run into some brutal air conditioning – especially in museums!
Gold ribbed earrings – Bony Levy; blue necklace – Loft; leather-wrapped earrings – Talbots; flax linen shirt – J.Crew; paisley top – Zulily; blue cardigan – Lands’ End; striped bracelets – Loft; striped tee shirt – Boden; stone cropped pants – L.L.Bean; square scarf – Echo; black skirt – Treasure & Bond; black espadrilles – J.Crew; gold bag – Like Dreams; gold espadrilles – Charleston Shoe Company
Her wardrobe covers her for business (just in case she has to go BACK TO THE OFFICE on Saturday – horror!!!), as well as leisure:
Maybe it’s over-planning, but she enjoys running through a few outfits in her mind before she tucks everything into her weekender bag:
Sometimes, she imagines that her bosses might send her directly from the home office to… Tokyo? Paris? AUCKLAND!
She’s ready!
love,
Janice
p.s. Ten years ago, I considered the possibility that a white shirt or top isn’t ALWAYS the best answer…

That paisley top really pull the whole thing together.
Totally!
What a lovely wardrobe! But she’d better pack some warmer clothes if she’s sent to Auckland. It’s winter in New Zealand!
Yes, and I’m on holiday in Auckland at the moment, and it’s raining a lot, so bring an umbrella!
I keep wondering how the striped top would look with the cross hatch bordered scarf: black skirt and espadrilles.
This capsule is wonderfully timeless.
What a beautiful painting.
I am totally in love with a black and indigo blue wardrobe; for some reason it sings to me! i would love to see one with black and denim as well. beautifully done. It makes me go back to my closet and think about what i have that I can put together. Thanks Janice You truly are a gift to us!

I love the painting and the star scarf.
This wardrobe really encapsulates (no pun intended) where I am right now – I’ve eliminated the thought of ‘work clothes’ and ‘leisure clothes.’ There was no point since I am only in the office 2 days a week, now it’s just ‘all clothes’ and I can figure out what to wear from there. It’s been freeing.
I’m loving these black + cream + color capsule wardrobes. Keep going!
in conjunction with the look back – did we ever come up with an alternative to button through shirts that be used in both the ways shown in the examples here? Something that has the formality of a shirt when worn alone but also looks right as the cover-up or outer layer of something else all in one item of clothing (otherwise i would have to split them in two to get the same effect: a stone cardigan and ivory popover blouse/shirt).
I love the level of dressiness here and that paisley print is calling my name. Sadly, I cannot wear dolman sleeves so I will just admire how that top adds pattern and colour to the wardrobe.
The rich blue is gorgeous and I’m a bit surprised to see that works with black. I’ve never really considered sapphire or royal blues to work with black but today’s blue is deeper, making the difference.
I love this series much! Black and beige are so much nicer, to my eye, than black and white. Funny that your “look back” was about white not always being the best choice. The previous one with the pink was absolutely wonderful—- I took a few notes so I could remember what I loved.
Could you do another one in this series with something in the blue-green range: aqua, teal, duck egg, etc?
Yes yes yes 100 times yes! Love the black & beige with blue too !
Great capsule! I’m heading to my closet to see if I can replicate this!
The proportions on some of these outfits bother me–long floppy cardigan with long floppy pants; what appears to be a long pencil skirt with a long cardigan. Too much flapping for me.
I really like this rich blue with the black (not as much with the cream). That last outfit with the paisley dolman sleeve top is gorgeous! The black and ivory outfits continue to look wonderful (and I think the new striped bracelet set option is a great choice). I second Julie’s suggestion of trying the black and ivory with a blue-green color; I think that could be wonderful!
I’d love to see you expand on this capsule wardrobe. I’m hoping to wear these colors for a month-long vacation in the fall. What else would the heroine add to the mix?
Love the capsule. For me, I’d replace black with charcoal, which would work better for my coloring.
