Start with a Scarf: Revisiting the Beach Roadtrip Scarf by Kate Spade New York

August 24, 2020

You wanted more of this scarf, and who could blame us? It’s just THAT pretty…

scarf – Kate Spade New York

And it appears to be back in stock at a few places that were sold out last week, when we first looked at this lovely thing…

Specifically, you wanted some brighter colors! So I kept a couple of the white garments that I used before, but I bumped up the accent colors quite a few notches:

Caribbean turquoise wrap top – Banana Republic; scarf – Kate Spade New York; rose wrap top – Banana Republic; white denim skirt – New York & Co.; gold ballet flats – Aerosoles

As always, when I’m at a loss as to what the best shoe color might be, I choose a metallic accent! Of course, it would be possible to have blue shoes, and rose shoes etc. etc…. I’m not telling you that this is a bad idea!

Coral and white feels perfect for late summer, doesn’t it?

Coral cardigan – Amazon Essentials; scarf – Kate Spade New York; earrings – Kendra Scott; coral tee – Vero Moda; coral flats – Børn; jeans – Lands’ End

And I personally love both of these shades of blue; how have I made it to 60 years old and I don’t wear blue? (oh heck, I don’t wear MOST colors… I could ask myself this question every day about something or another…)

Heather mineral cashmere t-shirt – J.Crew; scarf – Kate Spade New York; earrings – Napier; Barcelona blue sweater – J.Crew; crop pants – Lands’ End

These 3 Clusters make a great long-weekend travel capsule wardrobe – assuming that you’re not paranoid about having lots of white clothes with you!

What might one want to add to this wardrobe, if in fact the trip is longer than a weekend? I’ve ALWAYS got ideas…

white twist-front tee – Zella; tie-dye mask – Steve Madden; cabana pink linen shirt – Foxcroft; wild aster dress – Tahari; bracelet – Aqua; yellow tee – J.Crew; loafers – Aerosoles

NOW, this wardrobe is bright! But is it practical?

Yes, it’s a lot of white, but it’s also a lot of options:

In place of all of that white, one could, of course, use some light grey here, or beige, or navy…

love,

Janice

p.s. Seven years ago, my post was short but pointed – a car accident caused by a woman who could NOT walk in her shoes…

You would not get bored with this scarf for you can wear it with different accent colours every year and people will say:
“Oh, I do like your scarf, is it new?”

A cautionary tale for the look back. You do sometimes wonder whether people just think of the shoes that they will wear at their destination rather than consider the journey inbetween. Young women just seem to accept sprained ankles and blisters as par for the course – it’s all about ‘looking good’.

My first boss used to cycle to work in jeans and trainers. In her office were hung two or three skirts and court shoes to change into.

What a lovely way to start my week. You have no idea how much I look forward to your posts to start my day. If I can start wearing yellow and gold – maybe you can try some blue????

Love it! Thank you so much for featuring the bright colors! The freshwater pearl bracelet is very tempting.

This is so fresh and lovely. Totally not my colours but fun to look at nonetheless.

PS I’m not happy about Land’s End new clothing presentation. I want a clean picture of the garment OFF a model. Boo. Plus, the models appear to be computer generated. It looks odd.

Isn’t that weird – so many of their garments now aren’t show with a simple image, and they are indeed computer generated. I wonder if this is just a short-term virus avoidance thing, to keep models from actually having to… model?

Their color choices have been abbreviated to the point of boredom with some garments too… it will be interesting to see what happens to them, and to so many other retailers…

I’ve just been looking at websites of the various clothes retailers I shop with. The colours are a mish-mash. There is no collective cohesion. Some garments look as if they have been cobbled together with scraps from the cutting room floor. We are heading rapidly towards autumn, yet the ‘New In’ offering is a curious mix of summer clothes,
winter jumpers and quilted coats. I’m quite baffled.

Love this…finally my colors! I don’t wear white bottoms often, but stone or light navy/denim. This is perfect for us white gray ladies with fairer skin and light eyes. Blues are my favorites!! Also love a coral on occasion. Thank you!

lovely capsule, the bright accents really sing. I would probably wear neutral shoes – any taupe, mid-brown, blush, etc would work, although I love a good metallic shoe! – nancyo

I love these colors! Clear saturated brights always make me smile. This wardrobe is lovely, and I could look at these outfit groupings with the color coordinated and color coded shell dividers all day. Mwah!

Substitute a white T for the bright yellow one and navy pants for the white and I’d be ready to go…as long as I wore the scarf with almost every outfit (which one absolutely could do!). I have learned that these colors are a bit overpowering for me to wear, especially on the top. I need to soften them down so they don’t wear me. The pink linen shirt is a perfect example of that. I have started looking for linen shirt/jackets, marled knits, heathered Ts, and ombre/tie-dye scarves to mute down the brightness, and it seems to be working very well. I’m moving toward keeping true brights mostly represented on my bottom half or in small doses in earrings/necklaces…and in the meantime, adding a softer colored scarf when I wear a bright top or topper.

Now that it’s cooling down, I’m planning to start taking a daily walk along the Mississippi River (which I am fortunate enough to live right next to and to have a tremendous view of from my balcony, which has kept me sane during this pandemic). So it’s a good time for me to boost my face mask supply. Thanks for adding face masks to these wardrobes! That tie-dye one is so fun.

Beth T (my reply button isn’t working), I agree about this scarf looking fresh over repeated wearings. I’m imagining a cowboy knot or wrap or some kind of tie that lets you see a nice bit of the scene. All these bright tops would make wonderful backdrops for the scarf.

Janice, FYI, the turquoise wrap top link sends me to one of your prior posts rather than the BR site.

I really like the colors in this wardrobe. I understand that many people like black and darker neutral colors, but give me pink and other wonderful colors!
Also…have you ever done a travel wardrobe based on a purse? I have done so more than once. But then I like color and patterns in my purses.

I once did a post based on a bag – years ago. If you have a bag to suggest, bring it on!

I think I would swap out the coral flats for a pair of sneakers.

Also, I miss the days of whappage. LL Bean and Land’s End are very functional, but they don’t make me squeal with delight, which these days something really needs to do for me to justify adding it to my wardrobe.

Janice, you would definitely look amazing in those blues. I’m swooning over those colors, but drooling even more over the accessories. If only my wallet and my sense of having too much didn’t hold me back! I’m fairly certain I’d toss in one light grey or navy twill skirt!
