Build a Capsule Wardrobe by Starting with Art: Arlequin by Pablo Picasso, Version 2

August 16, 2016

I have to admit, when I first saw this painting, I thought of colors of denim:

Can you see it, too?

She knew that they said these things about her; she didn’t care.

She gardens, she hikes, she works with her hands. She thinks that being appropriate is pretty attractive…

“Of course, nobody grows more beautiful roses than she does…”

Are they blind to all subtlety?

Silly, silly people….

It's all in how you wear it! A clean pair of jeans, worn with decorum, can be more feminine than a frilly dress woen with no grace.

    Brilliant, Janice!

I love the colours and the aestheic here! From my computer, the links to the LL Bean clothes give a message saying 'invalid url'. I don't know if that's me or the links you put in? While I don't shop from your wardrobes, I like to follow the links sometimes to see what kind of fabric the clothes are made from, or the price, or what other colours they are available in. Keep up the good work!

The jeans links were just working alright – maybe something going wrong at Bean? If they don't work later, leave another comment and I'll do something confusing and technical…

If this woman lived near me, she would appear very well dressed. Most people around here *really* don't care about pretty things and trust me, it looks very different from this harmonius, beautifully accessorized casual look. I suppose they have more important things to think about, but as a lover of pretty things I strive to be like the lady you describe and be the change I would like to see in the world…

It's my winter wardrobe! Would love to afford that Stella McCartney scarf, but alas not in my budget this year. As a former professional woman now SAHM to a disabled kiddo (and yes, I try to grow roses!) I *live* in my jeans all winter, but I do like to look put together. Love the colors, and love love the inspiration.

Her outfits are very pretty. What planet are these women living on?

This might be my favorite week ever on TVF! I could live in this wardrobe (and pretty much do – these are my colors and my style). That Stella McCartney scarf is delectable! By the way, on the "in the bag" graphic, the jeans are listed as LL Bean, but the link goes to Levis site. – nancyo

YES!! Just because some of us like to spend time in the woods, on the lake, at the beach, or digging in the dirt, doesn't mean we don't like to look and feel well-put together!

I wear jeans more than anything else, so I love this. I do have a little dressier stuff, but my lifestyle calls for jeans most of the time. Thanks for the style for super casual.

I love this wardrobe! There isn't a piece in it that I wouldn't be happy wearing. To look "put together" in jeans and sweater is something I aspire to and occasionally manage to achieve, thanks to you. Mary

Janice, THANK YOU for giving us permission to feel pretty (because we ARE pretty) in whatever type of clothing we prefer! Your blog has blessed my wardrobe and my life! I'm directing woman I know to your site.

This is so, so pretty! The soft colours, the textures, the scarves, the jewellery – our heroine may be wearing jeans but she looks absolutely put together, and her flowery detailing is superb.

Yes, love the casual nature of this wardrobe. Chic and not frumpy at all. I too I'm living in Jeans/cords during our winter, the only way to stay warm. A skirt, leggings & boots would look too dressed up for everyday here…. I keep getting told by my family I dress to office..y when I am a SAHM, but like your post today I want to look PULLED TOGETHER without looking like I tried too hard. I can make this wardrobe with what I've got pretty much already. Lovely casual look, more colour ways please…. May I suggest, pink & maybe one in Jade Green.

This is so me…except that I have a dark-wash jean and red, hot pink, and teal tops, 1 each for warmer and cooler times….for spark!
    So wearable all year round.
I have copies of this and the dressier version.
    Wonderful—thanks so much!
