Another Summer Long Weekend Wardrobe: Start With Art – Birds in Winter by Atsushi Uemura

June 26, 2026

Her experiment of packing just teal and white was so much fun, she decided to try the same idea with a different accent color.

Her painting inspiration is this:

She had always had the persimmon/berry color in mind; this is her color palette so far:

She’s taking the same six pieces of white clothing, but she’s changed up some of her silver accessories for gold things. These small changes can feel like they make a huge difference!

necklace – BaubleBar; earrings – Joiana Jewelry; cotton sweater – L.L.Bean; linen shirt – Eileen Fisher; tee shirt – L.L.Bean; white linen pants – Caslon; white linen cropped pants – Caslon; crossbody bag – MZ Wallace; Bermuda shorts – GAP; tote bag- Lands’ End; sneakers – Naturalizer; ballet flats – Schutz; sandals – Bella Vita

She finally found the red that she wanted – a color that Eileen Fisher calls grenadine. Accessories were a bit easier to find in this color than they were with teal!

Grenadine hooded jacket – Eileen Fisher; necklace – BaubleBar; huggie earrings – Mint & Lily; sleeveless linen top – Eileen Fisher; tee shirt – Eileen Fisher; bandana – Echo; bracelet – Ebru Jewelry; jersey shorts – Eileen Fisher; linen pants – Eileen Fisher; sneakers – Vionic

She thinks that this long weekend travel capsule wardrobe feels both summery and festive:

As before, she’s not going to have to hang around the beach house trying to figure out what to wear; if she knows the weather, and what they’re planning to do, she will be ready in a heatbeat.

Here are a few possibilities:

I’ve got one more idea about this heroine and her wardrobe…

love,
Janice

p.s. Ten years ago, I shared a wardrobe dilemma with you, as well as a packing plan for Florida. For what it’s worth, the two cardigan about which I was fretting are long gone from my wardrobe…

Love this shade of red! It pumps up the wardrobe. I would throw some black pieces and feel ready for anything. Looking forward to combining the two wardrobes!
On the look back, it’s hilarious that the two cardigans are gone! Sometimes is true that we need items to close some gaps and get more mileage out of a thing. Others, it’s just wise to go with our gut and let go of things that for whatever reason don’t work. Here, it wasn’t the colors (evidently), so maybe one looked odd closed, or maybe -like me- you don’t like printed 2d layers as much. I like the idea and maybe how it looks in others, but everytime I try it, my reaction is a big nope!

I see magpies everyday. The irridescent sheen of their tail feathers is similar to labradorite or paua shell.

I would have teal blue and white with hints of black and red.

The lookback amused me. It started out as a post looking at items that you don’t wear much but you didn’t build a wardrobe around either of them!

Around here, this time of year, we’d call this wardrobe Canada Day eh.

I like it that it’s not stoplight red but just that slightly more sophisticated, subtle tone.

This wardrobe would be perfect for a Canada Day cottage trip.
I love red in the summer – it feels so appropriate and festive to me.

I’m just still not feeling this wardrobe, due to all the white. That being said, I love this shade of red and I think it would far more workable to eliminate some of the white and add in some of the blue. I believe it would be more workable to combine BOTH of these accent colors with the white. Is it red, white and blue? Yes. But, it also would be a classic combination, right in time for the USA’s 250th birthday. I know that, to our friends in other countries, 250 years is a blink of an eye…but it’s a big deal here in America. This wardrobe, with the combined two accent colors, would be just perfect.

What do other people think? Is wearing red, white and blue too American? I feel it’s very different to wear these well cut, beautiful pieces that aren’t ‘stars and stripes’ in your face, but others may feel differently.

I love the simplicity and versatility of this wardrobe.
As I’m well past wearing shorts, I’d swap them out for skirts; one white and one indigo denim. Some tops would ‘grow sleeves’ (half/elbow length). Just minor personalisation of a great go to summer wardrobe for home or travel.

I’m with you, Franki. I wear white all summer long and love it. No sleeveless for me. Skorts and skirts instead of shorts. Full length pants instead of ankle, crop or capris. The last thing I want do is make my legs appear shorter than they already are.

I love everything about these 2 wardrobes. I wear lots of white in the summer. I can do laundry and since it literally goes with anything I’m all in. Yeah red and white, yeah blue and white, yeah red white and blue! It just feels like summer to me and always has. Usually I pair it with white canvas Keds. Pretty old school but then I am old!!

I would personally prefer a more pinkish strawberry red, but this shade is very nice for the right heroine. It’s not as slam dunk with the white for me as the blue-teal color, but it’s definitely not wrong. I do like that you switched to gold metal here, and I’m looking forward to seeing how these two capsules integrate. Maybe a couple mixed metal pieces to make more natural to integrate the two metal colors in the larger wardrobe?

I absolutely love the gorgeous shade of red and wish I had pieces in that colour. The white is too stark for me, but I still consider a stunning wardrobe for the right person.
I can wear linen in sandstone? Ecru? but this might not be anywhere near as smart with that “grenadine” shade.
