How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe from Scratch Step 10: A Casual Jacket, Top and Shoes

July 3, 2014

So after we’ve prepared ourselves for those unavoidable formal occasions that crop up, let’s have a bit more fun and pick up a few things for our capsule wardrobe to make us more “casual-worthy”.

First off – a jacket. This could be a hooded sweatshirt (one of my favorites), a denim jacket, leather jacket, or whatever strikes your fancy.

Add in a relaxed top, and a pair of casual shoes (maybe in one of your accent colors?) and you’ve got a LOT more options…

Best Janice! These posts are great! I am compiling my own wardrobe sheet (that indeed are subject to change due to my body size after two children and career change) with the clothes I have purchased during spring and summer.
I now have a small request. :) Living in a country with four seasons, could you please include proper outerwear as well in the full wardrobe? And although you hinted that the skirt and jumper could exist in two sets (one for winter and one for summer), could you please add "the second set" so we can see the difference in colour/texture/style?
Once your serie is finished I will try to send you my real-life version of your wardrobe ieas!

Thank you for your posts and have a great summer!

      Pia,
What a thoughtful request. It would be most helpful to finish the capsule with the items you mentioned. Then we would have a capsule for the whole year. I hope we can all get to see your finished project. Good luck to you!

janice, thank you for this series. i love all your posts, but this is the most practical yet! only thing i do not like hooded sweatshirts, and i am always trying to find a casual alternative, even non hooded ones which are rarer to find.

There are nice linen blazers around this time of year, which are loosely cut, unlined, but still give a really finished look to an outfit. And by now they're probably on sale!

Janice, I love your website. It's been so helpful to me as I've pared down my wardrobe to the items that I like the most, wear the most and that fit properly. Your black/gray/red/cobalt blue combo is perfect for me, although I'm having problems finding the cobalt blue in my size. But even just a couple of tops go a long way in brightening up all the blacks and grays. Thanks for all the work you've put into this website!

Great twisted x shoes! Apparently it is easier to find women's workboots online, but you lose the chance to try them on, and I think the road test is vital to new footwear. Glad you could find some! :)
