A Common Capsule Wardrobe: A Variation of the standard, in navy and coral

May 20, 2013

Navy and pink were well-received, and almost immediately I received requests that would use coral rather than pink.  This is a particularly nice color combination that I often forget about! So this is The Common Wardrobe with which we will start:

 all clothes – L.L.Bean

Square scarf – Nina Ricci, square scarf – Antagoniste Paris, bracelet – Kenneth Jay Lane, earrings – Kara Ross, navy & coral rope and enamel necklace – Orly Genger, watch – Olivia Burton, bag – Debenhams, sunglasses – Guess, embroidered scarf – J. Crew, navy penny loafers – Bass, coral flats – Sam Edelman, coral heart socks – Dorothy Perkins, coral socks – Mango

love,
Janice

I love this combination of coral and navy! This is so similar to what I have been trying to do with my own wardrobe. You have inspired me to find a scarf to help complete what I already have. And I love the coral heart socks–what fun! Thanks for all you do! I hope I look more polished because of your blog.

OMG! Coral and navy are my spring capsule colors!! And yet, even when the clothes could have come straight from my closet, the Vivienne Files offers a treat — SOCKS!!! I have a pair of navy loafers almost exactly like those pictured, and I never thought about coral SOCKS! Please excuse me while I go shopping. :)

Socks are an amazing little touch that pulls things together; the really dapper men in my life have taught me this!

I was about to comment about the socks at that certain little touch. So very cute. And I can think of a few dapper men dressing like that too. :)

Also what I've been planning – navy blue, khaki and coral! Thank you so much.

I have never thought of socks as a fashion accessory. I've learned so much here!

Perfect! Navy is one of my basic colours (much more flattering than black for most over 60s!) and I have bought several coral items as it is my new favourite accent colour, so with a few additions this could be my holiday wardrobe. Thanks for the inspiration: I'll be clicking and shopping any minute now!

Love, the coral! This would be a winter wardrobe here! LOL! I would add a little mint, my new obsession! I have always loved colorful socks too. Thanks so much for all your posts. I look so forward to them.

    Hello Vivienne,
Oh, yes, Coral is my kind of pink. All the ideas are gorgeous. Thank you. Kirsten

This one is awesome — I'm doing a lot of coral right now, too.

Can I make a suggestion? Would you do a "how to" on building an accessory wardrobe for a capsule. I'm trying to stretch my muscles here, but it's harder than I thought it would be. I tend to buy my accessories in the same dependable colors I buy my clothes in — gold necklaces, topaz earrings to match my hair, brown or black scarves, black shoes, etc. I could definitely use some guidelines (or a shopping list!).

For example: "For a wardrobe with one neutral and one accent color, choose
    1) 1 pair of shoes in the neutral
    2) 1 pair of shoes in the accent
    3) X many necklaces in accent color
    4) scarf incorporating both neutral and accent color

I think this is second nature to you, but sometimes it helps the rest of us to see it spelled out!

    Thanks!

    Gorgeous!
I agree with Sara's comment above. Another question (and this is probably obvious to the rest of you), but if you don't show an item in a vignette, are we to assume that a safe bet is to make that item a neutral? Example: gray t-shirt, navy pants, navy loafers, and coral-navy scarf. Would you add a purse in a neutral? Or do we use the purse shown with the other vignettes? Is that getting too "matchy matchy"?
    Thanks!
    Renee

superb combo of navy and coral. I am very glad that you provide lots of things together like shoes, socks, hair roller, pants, watches, purse, etc. It is very easy for costumers that they can get their choice's variety through your website. love your site very much.
