Start with Art: The Slav Epic by Alfons Mucha

Wear Your Colors

She always took it to heart – auburn hair, ivory skin, lots of golden freckles…

So when she was invited to her friend’s country home for the weekend, packing was easy! These weekends are basically a lot of eating, a lot of laughing, and a LOT of napping…

Pearl headband – BP.; earrings – Talbots; bracelet – Talbots; scarf – Talbots; linen dress – J.Crew; shirt jacket – Treasure & Bond; tote – Talbots; sandals – Talbots

After dropping by her office for a few hours, she catches the bus; she will have to walk a bit when she arrives, but she will be nice and hungry when she gets there… Dinner is always late on Friday nights!

Enamel hoop earrings – Simon Harrison; scarf – Jessie Zhao New York; orange ivy earrings- Simon Harrison; daylily cotton sweater – L.L.Bean; marigold linen sleeveless top – J.Crew; brown linen shirt – J.Crew; wildfire linen tee shirt – J.Crew; tiger’s eye bracelet – Porter Lyons; bag – Madewell; floral skirt – Lavaand; citrine necklace – Latelita; honey brown shorts – J.Crew; brown sandals – Sarto by Franco Sarto; orange sandals – Sorel

Many of the friends assembled there will sleep late – although there are always a couple of ambitious people who get up before dawn to go hiking!

Brunch will last for HOURS… followed by naps for most of them. If you’re not in the mood for a nap, you can always sit on the veranda and read, or go for a walk…

Saturday dinner is a PRODUCTION, and nobody gets to bed before 2… Much wine is consumed, much laughter is shared…

They all gather to brunch on Sunday, and devour the multiple newspapers that someone fetches in the pre-dawn darkness…

Then most of them get sorted out to head back into the city; our heroine might be able to catch a lift!

She’s home in time for a bite of dinner, emptying and sorting her weekender bag, and watching some TV. A perfect, relaxing weekend…

Do you think she has blue eyes?

Maybe on a longer trip, some blue will be in her wardrobe…

love,

Janice

p.s. Five years ago, our heroine started with a black, brown and ivory wardrobe, and added aqua blue accents!

I so love these colours, Janis! They aren’t what I’d wear for my own colouring, but it makes me feel happy just to gaze at them, almost to sink into them. I envy the woman with the colouring to wear them

I love the paintings of Alfons Mucha. Maybe its because the Art Nouveau period is also a favourite. The colours are sublime. I’d love to see this extended with denim and duck egg blues.

If our heroine has blue eyes and auburn hair, then she is a very rare beauty.

My Soft Summer colour scheme for this wardrobe would be taupe, rose-pink, cameo rose, ivory, blue teal, light denim and duck-egg blue.

I noticed that she has packed three pairs of sliders for a weekend, and two almost exactly the same design? Perhaps she is determined not to go on a walk by deliberately packing non-walking shoes (a ruse), but a pair of closed toe loafers or leisure shoes for the walk from the bus might have been a more practical option. I hope she’s packed blister plasters.

Beth T, that was hilarious!! I also noted that all these shoes wouldn’t do the trick for walking. But that’s something I almost always have to change in my mind: a pair of sneakers swapping anything with heels. I would also alter the color palette, which is pretty to look at, but mine would be closer to yours.
      Hugs y’all!

This is quite lovely. I haven’t worn these colors since I went gray a few years ago, but they are quite beautiful to look at. Sometimes I miss the days when I wore the “warmer” colors like orange. Great way to start the day. Thank you Janice!

If you don’t fell comfortable wearing it in larger quantities, you could still use it for accessories! I bet you’d look lovely :)

Thanks! It’s weird, because I love yellow and still wear it… and some coral – but the bright orange went by the wayside.

I love the wardrobe, and now I really want someone to invite me to a vacation where the main activities are eating, laughing and napping.

Janice, I love this! The painting is so lovely and the colors look so happy. I have red/auburn hair, freckles and blue eyes. This looks like it was created just for me. Please extend it to include blue.

I love Mucha. Thank you, Janice. You are so talented. I’ve been looking at his work, trying to pull out an idea for a small capsule that has the softness and the lines with no luck. Love the whole feel of softly flowing liquid sunlight that you captured.

Grey and rainy morning, with the mist even the new leaves are a bit dull. What a beautiful pop of color when I opened this post. Thank you.
For me the dark , medium and light shades of the solid colored items adds interest.I think I need to apply that lesson in my own closet.

Speaking of blisters, on a trip to Italy I got a big blister on the sole of only foot. (Who gets blisters there?) anyway, I got these at a pharmacy and they saved my trip! One stayed on my blister for several days. I never travel without them.

My daughter is a red headed, blue/green eyed beauty but she loves grey and black with all the shades of blue, turquoise and green. I on the other hand (lighter brown and graying with green eyes) would love this wardrobe! Aren’t our color choices so personal. :) On one hand they do have to do with our coloring but they also have to do with our personality, I’ve found.

These must be young heroines! I am lucky enough to have these kinds of weekends with friends, but we are all tucked up in bed by 9:30 or 10. I also agree with the comments about the walking shoes – those thin sandals are cute but don’t offer much support for walking any kind of distance.
Love that skirt and also the linen dress – such sunshiney colors. They just kind of make you smile

Count me as another who loves the colors. My formerly dark auburn hair is much lighter now, but still holds enough color to work with this lighter version of the palette I used to wear. How in the world do retailers expect us to find the colors we want with names like wildfire, daylily and marigold? While daylily is nicely descriptive for this color, I certainly wouldn’t think to search for it. I think of a completely different color when I hear marigold. I loved the look of the linen dress until I saw it on the models. Yikes! Can we say low arm holes? I was picturing something longer too from the photo. I love the print on the skirt, and I know I shouldn’t mention it, but I’m pretty sure the sofa in my SIL’s new mobile home in the seventies came with just that print. Great for a skirt, less fortunate for a couch.

Searching for colors is one of the things that takes the most time in my work! Finding things that don’t cost the moon, and that are available in sizes above -14 are my other aggravations…

Happily, I have a long attention span, and I ignore stress. (ha…)

This is so lovely, and I do hope it gets extended to include the blue-green tones. After all, red-orange and blue-green are complementary colors, and in this artwork it is reminiscent of patina on copper. The color palette looks more straight blue to me, but I hope we will see blue-green!

      Sally in St. Paul,
I echo your sentiment about the inclusion of the blue- green color! A perfect complement to the red orange and copper hues !

I love this artwork, and I love this wardrobe, too! I have coloring very like your heroine’s and while I’ve tended to wear more blues and greens, I’ve been exploring these warmer colors over the past couple years (replacing a worn out blue tee with ambery gold, etc..).

I love your posts, Janice. But I LOVE this one!!!

I could easily toss my wardrobe out and start over with these selections! Absolutely stunning!

Although the color isn’t present in the palette, I could see a bit of olive green mixed in here — perhaps for fall/winter?

I love the idea of taking a bus to a weekend getaway. It sounds so charming.

I hunted up more of Mucha’s work & am convinced every TVF reader could find at least one that would appeal from a colour standpoint. Sigh…have to say again how much I love this. What I see is a touch of ivory, 2 shades of camel/caramel, a blue, a pale turquoise, a yellow and 2 oranges. I find this reflective of many things in my closet except for the orange. Yep, I have the auburn hair like the heroine, but the eyes are an unusual amber brown with gold and green flecks…so this really works. Hmm…maybe a mini capsule? There have been so many wardrobes that I love that it would be tough to pick only one. Maybe a main one with 3-4 piece mini accents would satisfy the craving for a variety…will have to think again & maybe cull more unwanteds to make more room.

If you add blue and our heroine decides she might like to take an early morning walk, too, this hoodie would play well with her other colors

Hi Janice and Everyone! I loooooove this capsule in spite of my brown eyes and brown hair. I would like to see how a blue hue works with these colors.
As per Alice’s comment…I like vacations when Food Just Appears. I sit down, and food is put in front of me. I don’t have to defrost anything, or peel, or stand over a stove. Which is why I find Room Service absolutely decadent.
A Mucha exhibit came to our local art museum, with background information on ‘The Slav Epic’. Mucha wanted to depict the history of the Slavic people with its battles and triumphs from the Dark Ages to 1861 (and a panel that looks toward the future). I find it interesting, as one who is half-Polish, that these paintings were completed across the span of WW I. So, you chose a very pertinent work Janice 🌻
