Always Wear Green? Start With Art: Helen Frankenthaler – Lush Spring

May 26, 2025

“But I ALWAYS wear green? I look great in green. Can’t I wear it when we go to Dublin?”

Well, yes. Of course you can. Nobody there will probably even notice! Just don’t say “top o’ the mornin'” to anybody…

Our heroine loves this painting – the huge blocks of green, accented with the tiniest touches of blue, red, blush…

For the purposes of her upcoming trip to Dublin, our heroine has isolated these colors for her travel capsule wardrobe:

Her starting point is easy – comfortable shades of green, waterproof shoes, a pretty scarf and some classic earrings!

Coat – Lands’ End; earrings – Bling Jewelry; linen scarf – Pashmisy; tee shirt – Lands’ End; suitcase – Béis; barrel pants – Lands’ End; waterproof sneakers – Propét

But NOW what to pack?

“You’d better be prepared – Ireland is cool even in the summer!”

So she packs these things; note that the sweatpants have “normal” legs, so that unless someone gets a good look at your waistband, they’ll never know that these are sweatpants:

Cashmere sweater – L.L.Bean; earrings – Bling Jewelry; scarf – Artifact.; grey chambray shirt – Lands’ End; lily pad green sweatshirt – Lands’ End; sweatpants – L.L.Bean; loafers – Forever & Always Shoes

“Dublin’s been having record warm temperatures! They’re all saying how warm it has been there!!!

So she packs this:

fwiw, this is the crossbody bag I’m currently carrying; it holds a ton, and strap length can be quickly adjusted. I’m quite pleased with it…

Green tee – Alex Mill; aventurine earrings – Bling Jewelry; green striped shirt – Alex Mill; white tee – L.L.Bean; linen pants – Eileen Fisher; crossbody bag – Sol and Selene; ballet sneakers – Jeffrey Campbell

And she at this point has a wardrobe that should work pretty well for her… Weather that’s all over the place makes planning difficult!

Honestly, if there was any destination in the world for which I would suggest bringing some ready spending money, Dublin is it! If it’s cold, buy a gorgeous sweater. If it’s warm, there are dozens of places in the city center where you can find tee shirts, linen shirts, summer dresses – lots more summer clothing than one would expect for such a cool climate.

While our heroine might be perfectly happy with 10 pieces of clothing, I’m suggesting three additions:

  • another sweatshirt,
  • a simple button-front shirt that can be worn over tee shirts or under sweatshirts and sweaters, and
  • another tee shirt, which can be worn alone or under other things.

Dublin’s a great place to find a warm and lovely wool wrap, by the way…

White oxford shirt – L.L.Bean; scarf – Alpaca Loco; aventurine bracelet – Gold Trip; green tee shirt – J.Crew; sweatshirt – Alex Mill; socks – Heat Holders

Her complete travel capsule wardrobe now looks like this – pretty Irish, I have to say! But I don’t know that anybody is going to pay THAT much attention to what anybody is wearing. So long as you’re decent, reasonably clean and don’t smell like something three days dead, you’ll be fine:

As always, let’s see what kind of outfits can come from this wardrobe:

10. white shirt, grey sweatpants, green sweatshirt

I’m going to try to go to Dublin in July for a week – I am going to end up with the most split-personality suitcase imaginable…

love,

Janice

p.s. Ten years ago, we plotted a travel capsule wardrobe in black and beige, for warmer weather. You could still pack these things today!

I love this Janice! If I didn’t wear navy/white, THIS would be my next wardrobe 🥰

Well, I’ve never been to Dublin and I rarely wear green, but this collection makes me to do both!

This wardrobe says a sporty trip with tons of walking and a heroine who likes to be prepared to any eventuality. I admire this heroine (and her wardrobe’s creator) for her chutzpah!

There are so many wonderful shades of green and the ones you combined definitely are soft and work together beautifully.

I’m really enjoying this art-by-women series. There is an excellent museum in Washington, DC called National Museum of Women in the Arts. It’s definitely worth a visit.

My son and daughter in law live in Alexandria, just over the Potomac River from DC. Each time I visit, I love to check out one of the many national museums…this one will be next on my list!

Love this green wardrobe! Seems very appropriate for Ireland, particularly the waterproof sneakers. It’s been years since I visited Ireland, but my waterproof sneakers and raincoat were worn every day. I hope your July trip comes to fruition!

Not this artist, but one in the Six Paintings series, is having a moment at MOMA: Hilma af Klint. This exhibition explores her love of plants and flowers, and I wish I lived close enough to visit. Here’s the link if anyone is interested: https://www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/5779
Thank you Janice for today’s lovely post, and for introducing us to so many wonderful artists (and wardrobes!)

I have the LL Bean Sweatpants and they are so comfortable and cozy! They really do pass as regular pants when the waistband is covered. Right now they have a lovely variety of colors in stock.

Thank you, Janice! I’m so much happier with my wardrobe since I took your advice about limiting my color palette. It’s so easy to get dressed and now I always look put together.

I loath green on myself but glad that you kept it low key for a trip to Ireland as that look could go sideways fast in Kelly green! Where I think you got it 100% right was the white linen pants and the cute ballet sneakers. I do not love barrel pants and have been trying desperately to understand why. I think it’s because they are usually shown with some heavy shoe that makes them read ‘clown’ pants. The proportion is off…I saw a woman the other day wearing a pair with a ballet flat and I thought they looked rather stylish..then saw another woman in a pair with the heavy looking sneakers and I had a major aha moment. It’s the shoes not the pants. So I would nix the waterproof shoes with the green barrels ( save them for jeans or straight leg pants) and wear the pants with ballet flats or some visually lighter shoe. The white sneakers will be perfect with the white pants.

Yes you are right about barrel pants or carrot pants (Marks and Spencer has both). They just look odd. Probably best worn on long thin legs to give them shape.

I love the painting and the scheme with all those greens.

For a cross-body bag, I can thoroughly recommend the Switchbag from Picard (https://picard-fashion.com/en/collections/serie-switchbag). It is intended to be one something that sits inside a handbag/tote/backpack and can easily be changed from one to another. However, it comes with its own detachable long strap, which although narrow works fine. (I unpicked one end of the strap to put a small pin-less buckle on it so that I could adjust the length to wear it either on my shoulder or across the body.) It also works well if you substitute one of the woven straps that are currently available all over the place. I have the larger one (in pistachio), which has multiple pockets (including 2 outside zipped ones) and is long enough to hold a boarding pass along with my passport, purse, mobile phone, tissues, keys and sundry other essentials, without straining at the seams.

I am also enjoying the women in art series. Just got back from an extended long weekend where the weather was all over the place. Thank you Janice, as I would have been lost as to how to pack without you. Only one top not worn, out of sleeveless to light sweaters.

I add my patterned pieces and then I’m happy.

Intriguing. Our heroine could jazz things up with jewellery or scarves that pick up the accent colours.
