These are so much fun…
Grey is tough! It’s really difficult to find things in shades that look good together… But you can easily imagine these tops with jeans, and a pair of nice grey pants will go anywhere short of a barn or a beach…
![Four Key Pieces for the winter holidays, in grey Four Key Pieces for the winter holidays, in grey](https://www.theviviennefiles.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/1.FourKeyPiecesingreyforthewinterholidays.jpg)
silk blouse – Maison Flaneur; pearl-embellished cardigan – Neiman Marcus; pants – Uniqlo; bow sweater – J.Crew
Little touches like snowflakes on your ears, or a sparkly clutch bag, can elevate the dressiness quotient of a classic outfit:
snowflake earrings – Unwritten; loafers – Tod’s; wristlet – Kara; pearl hoop earrings – Samira 13; loafers – Botkier
Of course, if you have genuine grey pearl jewelry, the pearls on your cardigan will not look as nice, but that’s not something worth worrying about – it’s the holidays!
earrings – David Yurman; ring – Tara Pearls; boots – Vince Camuto; clip-on earrings – Kenneth Jay Lane; velvet flats – Vaneli
One of the very best things about choosing a signature color for holidays (or anything else!) is that you can then collect really nice, high-quality things from year to year and assemble a small but very elegant party wardrobe!
velour top – Uniqlo; wrap blouse– Dorothy Perkins; wide-legged pants – Uniqlo; cashmere cardigan – L.L.Bean
Garnets look wonderful with this color! And the mules at the top are sort of an amazing mix of gold and silver? Or maybe not gold, but sort of a rusty, wine-touched beige? I’m not sure…
garnet necklace – Saranarat; ring – Emma Chapman Jewels; mules – Seychelles; earrings – Gianluca Anzani; crystal ballet flats – Lauren Lorraine
square earrings – Jenny Packham; clutch- La Regale; pewter flats – Mercedes Castillo; flower earrings – Iradj Moini; wine velvet flats – Vince Camuto
Although I’m choosing these pieces with the upcoming winter holidays in mind, this kind of approach could work for anyone who only needs to get “fancy” once in a while…
What other colors would you like to see? Plum and hunter green are on the list!
love,
Janice

Waiting for plum,

I would love to see a rich navy.
Last Friday's post – the original version of this – was dark navy. It might have looked black on our computer, but I promise that it's really blue!

I wore grey and wine yesterday, am wearing wine with greytoday (just to mix it up!), posts coming soon, and I've just replied to a comment on my blog saying I'm heading towards wine,to perk up my ubiquitous grey demand black. Spooky or what?!!!
Happy weekend and thanks so much for the technical info on feet. Hugs, x.
Wine is just so rich and luscious – it looks good with most neutrals, and it's in great abundance this year. You picked a good season to fall in love with it!

Janice
My favorite color to wear from Advent through Twelfth Night Is ivory/winter white.
Glad to hear there's another fan of the winter white season. : )
There is nothing more beautiful than winter white from head to toe, especially when you play with the texture and/or add sheen. It's a truly timeless go-to for holiday events without messy projects or children involved. Lately, I've even adapted this look for my most casual wear, today opting for a chunky undyed wool (off-white) open knit sweater, white jeans, camel suede chukkas, and simple multi-circular gold earrings. Perfect this time of year! "Snowy" without being literal about snowflakes. I plan to wear this combination several more times this season.
This is a great idea..if a person has self discipline!!
How about a teal blue and pale gold combo please. Would the festive capsules still work if you had two items in the dark neutral and two in the accent colour rather than four of each colour? My budget won't run to 8 items. Sharon, U.K.
Absolutely – so long as your pieces go together, you can mix colors any way you want!
hugs,
Janice
I like to wear black with statement jewelry for the holidays…the plum and wine options are lovely but those colours do not work for me…I'll stand by and watch your other colour stories!
Great, great post. Grey is my Number 1 fave. I love the shock of the brownish garnet. Delicious. The clothes are so beautifully simple. Right up my alley. I'd feel very glam and comfortable dressed in any of this array. Thank you so much.
Could these 8 pieces be expanded into a 4×4 wardrobe?
Absolutely! (brain working madly…)
hugs,
Janice
These holiday/dress-up wardrobes are so pretty! I would love to see a sort of silvery blue.
Mmm. I love that idea. Reminiscent of ice, maybe?
Teal p!ease. I have a crushed velvet teal top and a burnout velvet teal top. Ideas of what to wear with them would be good. Thanks
Ooh, yes to teal, please. I am looking forward to the forest green as well. I have a forest velvet tunic from J Jill I bought a couple of years ago and never got much use out of. It’s kind of dark with just black, dull with grey, and I never wear camel. Green pants would give a jolly green giant effect…
I'd love to see an example of fancy pieces mixed with "existing" wardrobe items rather than just each other. Maybe adding a holiday capsule to a "common wardrobe" and seeing what outfits emerge? — Sarah
I love this idea! – nancyo
Another request for teal. <3
Would love to an all skirt capsule in grey, black and teal. With maybe a bit of dark brown and creamy White.
