The temperature was right around freezing – both of the women I saw had their hands in their pockets, and I didn't notice their handbags. The younger woman, in the red shoes, was NOT wearing hosiery, and must have been FREEZING. The older woman, in the beige, was wearing black opaque hosiery of some sort – much more intelligent!

Two questions:
1. What was the temperature on the day you saw the outfits in question?
2. From what you could tell, were the women wearing some sort of socks or hosiery to keep their tootsies warm while wearing those adorable ballet flats? I love flats, but tend to not wear them during the winter because frostbite is never fun.
The puffy jacket is just not a look for me…it makes me feel like the stay puff marshmallow man! (though I concede that it's necessary while skiing if you want to stay warm.) However, I'm pleased that women who do choose these sorts (and I'm sure look good in them) chose chic accessories.
For me and my body shape, I would re-interpret the second look with a non-puffy trench. I'm a fan of a very streamlined look – not minimalist, but more like English aristocrat out for a ride. Anyway, riding pants and scarves are a big part of that equestrian look, and it pulls from the sportier aspects of the chic looks you outlined above. Thanks for sharing!
Very wise–a lesson i need to learn. Now help me pick out some scarves.
I do think both of those looks would have been improved with boots instead of ballet flats. Somewhat top-heavy and unbalanced about the look. But I love the colour combinations and looks otherwise. I think looking well dressed has a lot to do with respecting the weather and season. So this is my only reservation.
