Some of you have been over the Seasalt Cornwall website with a fine-tooth comb! There have been questions about how to incorporate Fair Isle sweaters into a wardrobe, so I’m going to address one of the (at least) three Fair Isle sweaters I see there.
This sweater is lovely, and the colors are unusual:
Our friend who wants to buy this sweater is interested in using it as the fulcrum around which she will assemble a small autumn wardrobe. She only needs clothes for weekends, and an occasional week night, so she feels like the Slot Machine will work for her…
Just as a reminder, this is our plan:
Pants are pretty straightforward – taupe, olive, and my favorite ivory cords!
Handbag – The Sak; olive earrings – Talbots; tan jeans – Coldwater Creek; ivory corduroy pants – Coldwater Creek; thyme green pants – L.L.Bean; boots – Bella Vita; socks – Talbots
I grabbed my favorite (not cheap!) silk shirt for this heroine, as well as simple tee and a cotton turtleneck. If you’re going to have a group of clothes in the colors of a sweater, it makes sense to grab the matching scarf! Although – interestingly – the scarf is bound in burgundy, while the cardigan is bound in green. I like this little change of pace!

Finally, let’s get our friend some second layers! The pink jumps into this wardrobe like Barbie at a hunting lodge… But why not? Changes of pace and mood are important to some of us, right?

Our Slot Machine might be pushing the limits of what’s possible. Would you wear the pink cardigan and the fig turtleneck together? I think – if I had the triangle scarf – I would be okay with it. But it IS out of the ordinary…
Because I tossed all kinds of accessories into this wardrobe, I thought that it was worth looking at everything in a more relaxed and expected layout. The pink cardigan still sticks out – to me – buy there’s nothing wrong with wardrobe outliers. So long as you wear things and love them, let them “outlie!”
Our friend has plenty of outfit possibilities – certainly enough to get through weekends! Even a three-day weekend would be easy with this capsule wardrobe:
More and more, I suspect that my next travel capsule wardrobe is going to be a Slot Machine. Or a Sloth Machine, given my very relaxed travel habits!

This is lovely! I would wear the fig turtleneck with the pink cardigan, but only with the scarf to tie it together. I am really loving the Slot Machine method. I think I could wear this as my entire fall wardrobe with just the addition of a pair of jeans, which go with everything.
I am loving this template. Even when the colors are not mine, I learn a few things. Especially liking the accessories. I think the pink cardigan could work, but if it is a problem, Lands End shows a Rich Oatmeal version. And a Coffee… So, really, this is a perfect fallish capsule. Would I add anything? As Kim mentioned, a pair of jeans and another T shirt. And a fleece quarter zip top. That would cover a very long weekend. Thanksgiving, perhaps.
I am another recent Seasalt fan – I bought two dresses in the summer and a raincoat in the Nordstrom pre-season sale. Seasalt is a British company, so Americans buying direct are dealing with the uncertainty of tariffs. But luckily Nordstrom stocks a good amount of their products.
This is such a pretty wardrobe and such a great idea! Now, I’m curious about what our heroine does for work….is she a corporate executive and wears suits all week? Maybe she’s a doctor or a nurse and wears scrubs? In any case, you have pulled together some great pieces that would work for this heroine.
While these colors don’t work for me…as I’ve mentioned that anything purple makes me look like a potato…I can see this being a magical template for others considering that there are so many gorgeous fair isle, Nordic or geometric patterned sweaters out there right now that come in a plethora of colors. This idea is an easy plug and play once you decide on your colors. For me? I can do this is in shades of red, black and ivory…with a bit of denim thrown in. It’s how I travel in winter.
I also want to thank everyone who reached out on Wednesday, regarding it being my late husband’s birthday. While he’s been gone for 8 years, I still miss him every single day. It’s also stirred up lots of big feelings because our daughter’s long-awaited wedding is in two weeks. I’m doing okay….it’s just hard to lose your soulmate, especially in the awful way I did. I’m not sure it’s ever something you get over, but you do learn to process it enough to carry on most of the time. It just hits me like a ton of bricks now and then.
The Autumn Equinox happened a few days ago. I’m now contemplating the task of swapping wardrobes again. Though it continues in the low 20’s into October so I won’t be relegating summer clothes just yet but they will just be autumnal colours. Every year, I say that I will wear fewer clothes. 😬
I do like this. I would plan the wardrobe on green, plum and taupe trousers. Ivory, burgundy and pink tops/shirts with a floral top that incorporates all the colours. Apart from the cardigan, which has a green base, I would have a plum and pink 2nd layer. I also have a pink overcoat that brightens up a dull day.
