Some of you have been over the Seasalt Cornwall website with a fine-tooth comb! There have been questions about how to incorporate Fair Isle sweaters into a wardrobe, so I’m going to address one of the (at least) three Fair Isle sweaters I see there.
This sweater is lovely, and the colors are unusual:
Our friend who wants to buy this sweater is interested in using it as the fulcrum around which she will assemble a small autumn wardrobe. She only needs clothes for weekends, and an occasional week night, so she feels like the Slot Machine will work for her…
Just as a reminder, this is our plan:
Pants are pretty straightforward – taupe, olive, and my favorite ivory cords!
Handbag – The Sak; olive earrings – Talbots; tan jeans – Coldwater Creek; ivory corduroy pants – Coldwater Creek; thyme green pants – L.L.Bean; boots – Bella Vita; socks – Talbots
I grabbed my favorite (not cheap!) silk shirt for this heroine, as well as simple tee and a cotton turtleneck. If you’re going to have a group of clothes in the colors of a sweater, it makes sense to grab the matching scarf! Although – interestingly – the scarf is bound in burgundy, while the cardigan is bound in green. I like this little change of pace!

Finally, let’s get our friend some second layers! The pink jumps into this wardrobe like Barbie at a hunting lodge… But why not? Changes of pace and mood are important to some of us, right?

Our Slot Machine might be pushing the limits of what’s possible. Would you wear the pink cardigan and the fig turtleneck together? I think – if I had the triangle scarf – I would be okay with it. But it IS out of the ordinary…
Because I tossed all kinds of accessories into this wardrobe, I thought that it was worth looking at everything in a more relaxed and expected layout. The pink cardigan still sticks out – to me – buy there’s nothing wrong with wardrobe outliers. So long as you wear things and love them, let them “outlie!”
Our friend has plenty of outfit possibilities – certainly enough to get through weekends! Even a three-day weekend would be easy with this capsule wardrobe:
More and more, I suspect that my next travel capsule wardrobe is going to be a Slot Machine. Or a Sloth Machine, given my very relaxed travel habits!

This is lovely! I would wear the fig turtleneck with the pink cardigan, but only with the scarf to tie it together. I am really loving the Slot Machine method. I think I could wear this as my entire fall wardrobe with just the addition of a pair of jeans, which go with everything.
I am loving this template. Even when the colors are not mine, I learn a few things. Especially liking the accessories. I think the pink cardigan could work, but if it is a problem, Lands End shows a Rich Oatmeal version. And a Coffee… So, really, this is a perfect fallish capsule. Would I add anything? As Kim mentioned, a pair of jeans and another T shirt. And a fleece quarter zip top. That would cover a very long weekend. Thanksgiving, perhaps.
I am another recent Seasalt fan – I bought two dresses in the summer and a raincoat in the Nordstrom pre-season sale. Seasalt is a British company, so Americans buying direct are dealing with the uncertainty of tariffs. But luckily Nordstrom stocks a good amount of their products.
This is such a pretty wardrobe and such a great idea! Now, I’m curious about what our heroine does for work….is she a corporate executive and wears suits all week? Maybe she’s a doctor or a nurse and wears scrubs? In any case, you have pulled together some great pieces that would work for this heroine.
While these colors don’t work for me…as I’ve mentioned that anything purple makes me look like a potato…I can see this being a magical template for others considering that there are so many gorgeous fair isle, Nordic or geometric patterned sweaters out there right now that come in a plethora of colors. This idea is an easy plug and play once you decide on your colors. For me? I can do this is in shades of red, black and ivory…with a bit of denim thrown in. It’s how I travel in winter.
I also want to thank everyone who reached out on Wednesday, regarding it being my late husband’s birthday. While he’s been gone for 8 years, I still miss him every single day. It’s also stirred up lots of big feelings because our daughter’s long-awaited wedding is in two weeks. I’m doing okay….it’s just hard to lose your soulmate, especially in the awful way I did. I’m not sure it’s ever something you get over, but you do learn to process it enough to carry on most of the time. It just hits me like a ton of bricks now and then.
Ellen, I just want to say that I completely understand how you feel. September is a bit of a roller coaster ride for me emotionally. Sept. 2 is the anniversary of my first husband’s death (26 years now!), while Sept. 10 is the anniversary of my second marriage (just 4 years). Then Sept. 22 is my current husband’s birthday, while Sept. 24 is my first husband’s birthday. It’s an awful lot to process and feels a bit bipolar at times. And I lost my first husband quite young and very suddenly, so I know what it is to experience the traumatic loss of a soulmate. It took me 17 years to learn how to sit with that loss, but thankfully I did and built a very beautiful life along the way. So please know that I will be thinking of you over the next few weeks and sending prayers of comfort and healing that you can enjoy the wonderful experience of your daughter’s wedding. Thank you so much. I truly appreciate your kind, thoughtful and compassionate comments. I have been fortunate to have the amazing support of my mom, my kids, my friends, my colleagues. But, it’s a challenge, especially on these milestones. I just count my blessings that he got to see the kids graduate from college and our son commissioned as an Army officer. I’m sorry he wasn’t there when they graduated from graduate school or dance at their weddings…but I know he is proud.
As a widow, you know, people do treat you differently. You go from being a ‘two’ to a ‘one’. It’s very strange and hurtful, at times. But, it is what it is.
The Autumn Equinox happened a few days ago. I’m now contemplating the task of swapping wardrobes again. Though it continues in the low 20’s into October so I won’t be relegating summer clothes just yet but they will just be autumnal colours. Every year, I say that I will wear fewer clothes. 😬
I do like this. I would plan the wardrobe on green, plum and taupe trousers. Ivory, burgundy and pink tops/shirts with a floral top that incorporates all the colours. Apart from the cardigan, which has a green base, I would have a plum and pink 2nd layer. I also have a pink overcoat that brightens up a dull day.
Janice’s Banana Republic white silk skirt is on sale today with a 40% discount. I just bought it. I had been considering it previously, based on Janice’s earlier recommendations. When I saw it on sale I just knew I had to buy it.
I think this wardrobe is gorgeous. These were my colors during the pandemic, but I have redefined my color palette at the start of 2026 and am almost militant about sticking to that new palette. Otherwise, I would be sorely tempted by this beautiful wardrobe.

What beautiful colors! First thing I did was check for the sweater – since it has wool in it (I’m allergic) I was free to check the post without hope of possession :-D Personally, I love the outlier pink – I’m definitely one of those people for whom the “change of mood” is necessary. Plus, as shown, the pink and creams fall more towards the “going out for a nice dinner once in a while” vs “weekend chill plans” – especially since there’s no skirt/dress/fancy fabric in bottoms. Definitely need to evaluate a slot machine type of approach for my upcoming long weekend – although, to be honest, I usually go with a “2 x 2nd layer, 3x bottoms, 4x 1st layer” plan. The addition of the pink sweater is delightfully fresh and unexpected. I could enjoy wearing this slot machine wardrobe for quite a while before it felt repetitive.
Fig (aka wine aka burgundy) and soft pink are a slam dunk combination to me – it’s basically a form of monochromatic dressing – and I love either or both of those colors with olive/sage especially well…which makes sense because they are complementary colors. Often we think of Green + Red with the bright versions of those colors, which can definitely feel Christmas-y (though the Cranach heroines seems to be disproving that in her wardrobe). But I love taking complementary colors and toning them down to create a more muted complementary color scheme; you can still take advantage of the dynamic quality of opposite colors while keeping it the look more calm and less potentially overwhelming (if your own coloring is softer). Perhaps wine + olive is more a variant on the complementary colors Yellow-Green + Red-Violet, but the point remains.
My thoughts exactly on wearing green and red by toning them down to not look Christmasy. This olive/sage color is a neutral staple in my wardrobe. I wear it with other neutrals – navy, black, tan, cream – or accents – yellow, peach orange, coral, turquoise, lavender. While this palette doesn’t work for me as the fig is too dark and the pink not warm enough, I do like this wardrobe in its flexibility and balance.
Talking about the wine + olive combo makes me think of enjoying a Tuscan feast. And the soupcon of scarlet throwback is a good lesson in how one accent color can work with a number of neutrals. We don’t need a lot of accent colors to have flexibility if our neutrals are well-chosen. Just figure out what your signature accent colors are and run with them.

I think our heroine will be mighty happy with the pink cardigan when the full force of January gray weather hits. It will be a bright spot in her wardrobe. I just bought a pink blouse and plan to wear with burgundy-same color family- why not?
I think that is a great combination! I have burgundy pants that I wear with a pink shirt and denim jacket. I also wear the pants and shirt with my Mom’s black cashmere sweater and her pearls!

This particular pink sets my teeth on edge, but Bean has a mauve that looks great with “fig.” Their sweaters don’t come in mauve, but the turtleneck (& other tees) do, so I’d swap the two: that is, get the t-neck in mauve & the sweater in fig, and there you are, same general effect & guaranteed to go together.
