Love Black & White, but Crave Nature? Start With Art – Green Forest by Natalia Goncharova

May 19, 2025

Maybe you’re like today’s heroine – you love your black and white, but in the warm weather you want to wear the colors of plants, and water, and the sky!

Our heroine has a wide range of accent colors available. Always remember that you don’t have to match all of your accent colors to each other. I like to have them look nice together so that the images here look good, but in real life, you can be much more wide-ranging in your choices!

Our heroine is leaving from work, so she’s wearing things that will be useful when she gets to her warm destination:

Black linen jacket – Alex Mill; earrings – Mine Finds by Jay King; scarf – Jessie Zhao New York; glacier teal tee – L.L.Bean; black linen pants – Alex Mill; knit flats – Vivaia; backpack – Béis

I’m going to pack this heroine’s suitcase one piece at a time. The first thing I always start with is a top that can be switched out for whatever one is wearing while traveling. Maybe you got sweaty, or dirty… Or you just want a fresh look after arriving!

Tee shirt – Madewell; necklace – Saachi; crossbody bag – Aimee Kestenberg

The second thing I pack is always a “bottom.” For someone headed to a warm destination, shorts that go with everything she has with her so far is easy, and logical:

Black shorts – Lands’ End; earrings – Donatello Gian; sandals – Sam Edelman

Next, two pieces that go together beautifully, but also that go with her other clothes. The blue top with black shorts or pants is perfect, and both of her tee shirts will be ideal with white pants:

Pale cerulean linen top – J.Crew; silver sandals – Franco Sarto; white linen pants – Caslon

Hmm…. she doesn’t really have a TRUE green top yet, and she only has one pair of shorts. That makes her next additions easy!

Green poplin top – Lands’ End; ribbon scarf – Pig, Chicken & Cow; white shorts – Lands’ End

At this point, our heroine has nine pieces of clothing total in her travel capsule wardrobe, as well as three pairs of shoes and enough accessories to be beautiful. For a two, three or four-day weekend, this would be enough:

But if our heroine is going somewhere for a longer trip, she may well want more things! One could continue to add one or two garments at a time for a really LONG time. If you want to put together a Project 333 wardrobe, this would certainly be a way to do it.

Let’s assume that for a longer trip, our heroine will want a skirt. Black jersey is about as versatile as you can get, and a pretty top that goes with all of your shorts and pants is both dressy AND intelligent:

White top – Boden; earrings – Celebration Gems; black jersey skirt – Boden

At this stage, I feel like our heroine has enough bottoms, but could certainly use a couple of bright, summery tops. And perfect earrings should never be resisted!

Blue eyelet top – Caslon; earrings – Fierce Lynx Designs; green shirt – Caslon

A thirteen-piece travel capsule wardrobe requires a slightly larger suitcase, but it all still looks both efficient and fun:

I’m pretty certain that one could get dressed in the dark with this wardrobe! But just for fun, and to be sure that we haven’t gone off the rails, let’s look at some outfit possibilities:

Packing is so appealing right now; I think I’m going to try AGAIN to take a trip… maybe in July!

love,

Janice

p.s. Ten years ago, one of you received a beautiful pink jacket as a gift, and was completely in need of some hints!

Jesse Zhao has moved into my column of favorite scarf designers. She’s branched beyond the hidden animal motif, which I liked a lot. It’s exciting to see that she goes beyond a formula.
The capsule is great fun for playing the mental game of create-an-outfit.
Being a bright, clear, warm kind of gal, I am very drawn to the green Caslon shirt and the blue of the eyelet top.

Change the pale teal top for white and the shorts for trousers and this is my wardrobe. I have emerald green trousers that could be exchanged for one of the black pairs.

I LOVE THIS! What a great, easy wardrobe. I also love that you’re using Boden, which is one my favorite clothing sources, besides Talbots and J.Crew, but better than both. I freely admit that, even though I’m not supposed to be shopping now (as I am selling my house and moving), this black Boden skirt just spoke to me, so I clicked on the link to get you credit…and voila! I can make something very close close to this wardrobe in between my houses.

Boden also has some fantastic jersey dresses in this color scheme, should anyone want a dress to mix in.

What a beautiful wardrobe, and some of my favorite colors. (As I sit here in an entirely orange outfit with accents of bright pink) I also like Boden and wore it almost exclusively when my boys were young.
