Lots of women artists this month; if you love this painting, prints of it are available from the artist!
Our heroine loves a good dark brown – or any of the autumn colors! And she’s quite fond of pink and orange, together or separate. So her color palette is obvious and simple:
She’s going away for a weekend event, and absolutely NOBODY can give her a hint of what the weather will be! She knows that it’s cold where she is right now, so she’s going to dress a bit warmly, even though it’s May…
pink sweater – Americandreams; earrings – Anthropologie; scarf – Elizabeth Gillett; tee shirt – Lands’ End; ballet flats – Kenneth Cole; tote bag – Madewell; cropped palazzo pants – Lands’ End
It might be warm enough to wear a slippy little dress. Or she might actually need a sweater! And for her spare time, she’s even bringing a sweatshirt… Oh, weather keeps us on our toes, doesn’t it?
Crystal earrings – Swarovski; orange hoop earrings – Lavani Jewels; short-sleeved cardigan – Alex Mill; pink sweatshirt – Alex Mill; striped linen shirt – Boden; pink linen pants – J.Crew; linen dress – Alex Mill; bracelets – Fierce Lynx Designs; straw bag – Talbots; scarf – Elizabetta; skirt – Lands’ End; sandals – Talbots
Although she’s got all sorts of weights of clothes with her, it all still goes together pretty well. And it’s such a cheery assortment!
She understands that she might not know what she’s wearing for her event until late in the morning before things start. (2 p.m., I believe she told me…)
But she has quite a few options; this isn’t all of them!
These kinds of events (graduations, christenings, weddings, first Communions) are such fun, but when you don’t know what the weather’s going to be, you have to pack with some creativity!
love,
Janice
p.s. Ten years ago, a warmish weather travel capsule in white, blue and green was the order of the day!

Not my colors, but lovely as usual and timely since I’m having a 4 day conference and the weather is clear: changing!
The scarves! I’m on the hunt for a new one, but long must have list makes it hard (right colors, fresh but not too light material, etc.).
Happy weekend to everyone!
Cheers and blessings!
I love these colors and this overall style. You have hit it out of the park on this one! Me? I love a cozy sweater over a slip dress look. I think it’s chic and polished. Orange and pink together are among my favorite combinations, but they can take a too young, almost “Gymboree” look if done incorrectly. (I say this because my daughter, now 30, had multiple pink and orange outfits from there.) This doesn’t scream “I’m a baby” at all. It whispers, “I’m an elegant woman and I love a bit of color play.”
I’d forgotten about Gymboree. I loved that shop because everything was color coordinated. She’ll be 30 soon too!
What a perfect, sophisticated capsule! Thanks for kicking off the weekend with such inspiration.
I love orange and pink together. Not so wild about the brown, although it certainly looks great in the painting. Guess I’m just not a brown girl. Thank you Janice and hope everyone has a lovely weekend.
Silbury Hill – the most mysterious hill in England. No-one knows why or how it was built. After a lot of rain, the stream that flows by it, diverts to create a natural moat around the base of it. It is opposite Avebury Stone Circle and several ancient Long Barrow burials are in the fields around it. A great place to view the Milky Way and survey the mysteries of the universe.
Dear Beth – Thank you for this! I didn’t take the time to look up Silbury Hill, and I was wondering…
hugs,
Janice
Beth T, thanks! Now I appreciate the painting more. I went to the artist’s site and she has many intriguing pieces.
This is one of the reasons I love TVF. Janice is amazing and her readers are too. Thank you for teaching us.
With both the pink and orange colors muted, the brown as the neutral looks terrific. The striped Boden shirt is so perfect for this capsule, I can hardly stand it :D The brown mary janes in an old-trend style adds a nice “current” touch to the many timeless pieces. And the entire thing just works together extraordinarily well, even by Janice’s high standards.
I like the pink + orange colors brighter when black is the neutral, but I recently wore muted pink and bright orange with black as my neutral, and it looked better than I expected! I don’t actually wear bright orange very much at all, but I have a print scarf with bright orange that I like a lot that I’ve just started playing with to extend its use. If you like pink and orange, I think it’s well worth experimenting with what combinations you like with which neutrals.
I posted my outfit to my own blog if you are curious how my color combo looks – I know it won’t be to everyone’s taste! I feel weird putting my blog in the comments since Janice recently removed the option to enter our URL with our comments, suggesting she might not want that (or maybe it’s totally unrelated). But if you want to check it out, you can Google “A dusky pink and orange outfit for spring.”
Haha, oops I meant to say the mary janes are an *on-trend* style, and I wrote basically the opposite.
Oh that had to be entirely unrelated – I really WANT you to include your URL when you comment! I need to know how to find you, and I want all of us in this community to share each other’s creative work.
love,
Janice
Sally, I was unable to find your site, of course I am Not a google wizard at all! Curious, as I have looked at your outfits before and liked them.
I’ll help Sally out… I love checking out her content too! https://www.withinaworldofmyown.com/post/a-dusky-pink-orange-outfit-for-spring-diy-paper-beads
Sandy, it helped to put in the words Sally gave us and then a “, Sally” and it came right up! Hopefully that makes sense!
Thanks Kristi! Sally, that is actually a great combination. I can appreciate these colors better when I see them Live, so to speak. And, if you don’t mind my saying, it really suits you!
Is there an owl in the painting? Love the orange and pink. Love the striped shirt. Love the pink jumper.
I think that maybe there are tiny little owls flying in the sky? Maybe?
hugs,
Janice
The owl is the small white figure on the fence post in the mid foreground. Took me a long time to find it!
I see the owl! And definitely had to zoom in to see it. :)
Wow
It’s just perfect, especially with the muted pink/orange tones.
I love everything about it.
I really like this painting. The owl is sitting on the fence almost camouflaged. You could swap the brown out for a dark olive, at least that is another colour I see on my screen. Nice you can buy copies! My sister-in law sells some of her art on Etsy. Love the focus on female artists. Can’t wait to see more.
I just bought a T shirt dress for easy summer wear in pink and orange ( or coral)
to be a bit more exacting. Love the bright cheery tie dye pattern.
It took me a while to see the owl. Zoom in to see a Barn Owl on the right hand side of the fence. The birds in the sky will be rooks or crows flying to their night roosts in the tops of the trees. The Barn Owl has brilliant white chest plumage and white underwings that looks ghostly when flying at night. Their shrieking, screeching and hissing call is terrifying (not gentle hooting as other owls do).
Great painting! I would wear none of these colors and yet I really love this wardrobe. Perfect for your heroine.
I still have my Vionic sequined flip flops from the look back and love them. Extremely well made.
I love this color palette, these are my colors. Some pieces are not my style, for example the striped shirt, but I would love a blouse with those colors. Thanks for showing this combination, I will continue to build my wardrobe. It’s tough work when you add pieces little by little over the years, but I have a vision ever since I started following your blog.
