A Common Capsule Wardrobe, with dots

October 13, 2012

She just likes dots; they always make her smile. And sometimes, finding your “style signature” is just that simple…

Cuff bracelets, necklaces, watch, black dot earrings, gold dot earrings – Kate Spade, black silver gold dot earrings – John Hardy,  black w/white dots scarf – Kate Spade, saddle bag – Zatchels, socks – Happy Socks, white w/black dots scarf – Forever 21,  tights – Wolford, chelsea boots – Valentino, oxfords – Dieppa Restrepo

all clothes – J. Crew

love,
Janice

Dots are not really my thing (That's a Type 1 in the energy typing system I go by and I'm a 4)but this is so cute! I'm with Cornelia, it just made me smile.

I have been totally fascinated by these accessory groupings. This past week I went and made my own groupings to match each of your groups (except the black and white and the marcasite groups – that is because I am a Summer and black is a deadly awful color on me (even though I love it), I am going to do a navy grouping as a substitute). I found that I had at least one and usually several pieces for each group. And I even have a polka dot scarf, so this weeks group is covered, too!

Triple genius score from me for ingenuity and creating a signature style archetype!!! Each of us could pick our own stamp to suit our inner self. It doesn't have to be a colour, it can be a design motif like paisley.

Adore those polka-dotted oxfords! A signature style maker if there ever was one. :)

Once again: WOW :-) And now you could also add the Louis Vuitton Y. Kusama collection and go into a complete polka-dot frenzy ;-) You are really amazing and I really like the things you come up with! Have a HAPPY weekend! :-)

I once talked to a Mom who arranged her daughter's 8th birthday party around a theme of dots: The girls played dominos and painted their nails (decorated with dots), etc.

It was both creative and inexpensive. And clever.

Dots are so much fun! Whimsical!

I have used your blog to get dressed recently and I'd like to thank you for that. I'm not so much the 333 project but I'm over the excess of the packed closet. I don't have a problem finding my style; at the moment I'm honing in on the fact that boots are all I ever want to wear during the fall and winter. So instead of starting with an accessory, colour, top/bottom, I'm trying to see how few boots I can utilize to achieve the maximum amt of outfits–not buying any new clothes. Because heaven knows, a few pair of boots will do in the budget as quickly as Hermes scarves!

Looking at your combinations have made me laugh too because now I've used combos that are already in my closet that I've never put together before. How could I not have seen them? Haha! Thank you for your inspiring posts.

PS I love your wardrobe travel schemes–my family of four just got back from two months in Europe with only a carry -on each!

THE NEW HEADER IS DIVINE! You're making my heart ache for beautiful Paris! It's been years, but I do remember evening light on the Seine. Looking forward to hearing more about your wonderful getaway!

Meant to add that the dots are so fun. I've tried to wear dots and also stripes all thru the many years and I just look awful in those patterns (same for paisleys and plaids near the face; I have to have solids). So, accessorizing is certainly an alternative as opposed to the whole garment.

Noticed in comments on previous post about putting a number on shoes and bags allowed for A Common Wardrobe. (Or maybe it was how many as part of Project 333. Anyway…) I thought that was a good question, because when do we begin also to limit the accessorizing, although maybe that's just a very individual choice. Like everything, it's all about balance, and not filling up more closets with every-color-of-the-rainbow accoutrements (although it's so tempting, because I love a world of color). Fairly, some accessories don't take up too much room, though.

I did have a wonder also about your dresses. I wish I was more of a separates person, but I'm not; I tend to go for dresses more often. So I'd be really interested to see more of what you do with your dresses thru the seasons, and could you tell us (like you did for the slacks/pants, i.e. one being velvet, etc.) what are their fabrics/design; how do they differ and what/which goes for what occasion (day or night, or day-to-night, etc.).

Thanks! (I'm thinking of the above as maybe part of future posts, although I'm certainly not telling you how to run your blog! You've lit the fire in more than a few of us and now we've got the burning questions!)

I love the common wardrobe series. Maybe you will consider doing a similar series in the future featuring business clothes rather than casual wear. I could use some inspiration when it comes to suits and more formal business clothes.
