Packing for a warm-weather vacation, in red & navy

May 13, 2013

This was an interesting question – how do you pack if you want to carry on your bag, and you’re on one of those airlines with a really LOW, and really STRICT, weight limit? (At least the destination was a warm weather vacation spot…)

My first advice was to get the lightest bag possible – nylon, with no structure at all.  You should consider lining it with dry cleaning bags, or packing your clothes in plastic bags, because these bags are not waterproof.  Beyond that, a very few items of clothing, in silk, linen or cotton.  No jeans -they weight too much!

The other aspect of this request that really piqued my interested was the desire to wear navy, red and white – a color combination that can begin to look very “American Presidential Candidate” in a hurry!  But avoiding anything that might look like a navy suit, and wearing nothing with stars on them (nor red and white stripes) seems to have worked well.  Seersucker is lightweight and cool, sandals for sightseeing, and a sundress for sweltering days wrap up this tiny travel capsule.

tee shirt – Ralph Lauren, red earrings – inSync, watch – Brooks Brothers, scarf – Brooks Brothers, navy cardigan – Tory Burch, red linen pants – House of Fraser, moccasins – Gucci, cross-body bag – O.S.P.,
nylon bag – Liebeskind
striped scarf – Brooks Brothers, navy skirt – Chinti & Parker, white pleat-front tee, navy & white seersucker Capri pants – J.Crew, red sunglasses – Kate Spade,  navy silk top – Joie, striped top – Raxevsky, chambray dress – Marc by Marc Jacobs, navy sandals – A.P.C., white sandals – Aerosoles

love,
Janice

Ooh, lovely, thankyou – the smaller the capsule, the happier I am :)

I love this capsule! I'm a huge red, white, and blue gal, and I rarely look like an "American Presidential Candidate", lol.

You must be doing it right! Do you remember (maybe you're not old enough!) when we ALL interviewed, after college, in navy or grey suits, white shirts, and little bow ties? I looked like a candidate for Kid President…

My bowtie was a dusty pink in dupionni silk. I saved it for all these years because it is so typical of the time/place (1984 Richmond VA).

Red foulard. I was all about the high-contrast "Winter" thing. With a navy suit and a white starched shirt, I could easily have gone to the Iowa Caucuses…

It is, in fact, a lot more work, but if it's helpful (please let me know!) I will continue to do it. The whole point of this blog is to make choosing wardrobes and getting dressed easy, so we can all go out and do the amazing things of which we are so capable.

I too love the links! Hope it becomes a source of income eventually. The Brooks Brothers watch just went on my wishlist!

This is a very nice doable summer wardrobe. I always liked red, white and blue, but since I am not American I didn't ever fee presidential. :)

The links are fabulous!!! And yes, the vendors should be paying attention and advertising on your site. This is a great capsule. I note the red sunglasses.
