Does Anybody Care About Making and Selling Beautiful, Comfortable Shoes? Heck YES!

This is a shamelessly sponsored post! Yes, I was given a pair of shoes, which is a pretty sweet deal. But I hope that you know me well enough by now to know that if I didn't think that something was worth your time and effort, I wouldn't write about it - I'm not going to sell out and waste your time, and my good reputation...Last week, I was invited to the Thierry Rabotin shoes trunk show at Hanig's Footwear. I've been buying shoes from Hanig's for... 25 years? maybe, and I've been buying Thierry Rabotin (1 pair every 6 months, VERY carefully chosen) since they began carrying them. So I just thought that they were inviting me because I'm an old, and pretty good, customer...

Heck no! They offered me a pair of CUSTOM SHOES, in exchange for ... View the Post

Warm Grey and Cool Grey – Spotting the Difference

Last week when I told you that I saw lots of women in Paris stocking up on varying shades of grey, it brought up the question of different greys - warm and cool.

Of course, in its purest sense, grey is just black mixed with white, and thus should be neither cool nor warm. But when you start talking about textiles - many of which have a natural, underlying warmth to them (think unbleached cotton, or raw wool), things get more complicated.

Rather than try to come up with a theory about all of this, I'm just going to share with you a whole bunch of various items, arranged as best I can from the warmer toned to the cool. And yes, I completely cheated by putting a gradient background under these, so you can more easily see the yellow or ... View the Post

Color Palettes – Never Take This For Granted…

I got back from Paris yesterday evening (although I'm writing this on the 18th of September, so anything's possible!).... Before I went on vacation I was looking around the internet for color inspirations and to see other approaches to color combinations - especially those outside of the fashion world.

So I suggest you get thee to a site called Design Seeds and enjoy yourself. Bookmark it and visit often, because they're always changing up the featured combinations, and they're always beautiful, if not always to one's personal preference. But what a source of ideas...

I cooked up a few new combinations - some taken directly from that site, and some that just came to me:

I'm curious to hear which of ... View the Post

Pantone “New” Colors for Spring 2018 – Accessories in a Dozen Colors…

September 29, 2017

This is always one of my favorite little mini-events of the fashion year - when Pantone tells us what the "new" colors will be. Of course we all understand that a new color is a physical impossibility, but I still enjoy seeing what they're thinking, and then looking for some accessories that might reflect these colors (more or less!).

It's especially fun for me because I tend to go back to my old template to reuse it, and I can see how very much alike some of the colors are from season to season. This color could easily be the Grenadine from last fall - it even comes first in the list, just as Grenadine did... (Frankly, I would have rearranged things a bit so that the similarity wasn't quite so obvious!)

As ... View the Post

How Do I Choose My Favorite Colors?

July 28, 2017

This sounds like a silly question - we've all known our favorite colors since we were children, haven't we?

Well, in a nutshell, no. I get emails every day from people who still struggle to choose their neutrals, or to find a signature accent color, or some other variation on these themes that boils down to the issue of knowing what we most like.

Recently, one of you commented that you found peridot green as an accent when you kept seeing that color when you meditated! I personally found this to be utterly brilliant, and about as fail-safe a way to choose a signature as humanly possible. But what if you don't meditate?

I'm suggesting that you start looking for opportunities to make choices - all KINDS of choices - ... View the Post

How to Add Accent Colors to Your Capsule Wardrobe – Hot Pink and Green

Remember this beautiful painting, and intriguing color palette?

And of course you remember this wardrobe from last week...

In and of itself, this is a pretty good assortment of clothes:

But for most of us, for the entire summer, we're going to want more than 16 pieces... So let's have our heroine start out her shopping by adding some hot pink, as well as a bit more black and white. For many of us, these shorts might be a big longer (like capri pant length!), or one could also find a skirt in this color...

This is how her wardrobe now looks with the additional pieces. The hot pink definitely doesn't blend in with everything else, but since it's meant to be an accent color, it really doesn't have to go with everything ... View the Post

Beautiful Days, Even in Chaos…

Okay, it's not really chaos - I'm just having some blog issues. Many of you noticed that my Blog List magically disappeared, so I got to wrestle with that...

And then there's the whole brown wardrobe question. It's difficult. Really, really difficult. Those of you who love wearing brown know what I'm talking about!

Today's also my mother's birthday, so I'm going to frankly neglect The Vivienne Files for a few hours and hang out with her; she's visit me right now, and I'm going to take advantage.

So let me leave you with this photograph taken yesterday, just down the street from Chez Vivienne Files. To me, this is a reminder that you can adopt any color scheme in the world that you want! Many of us are old enough to remember the ... View the Post

Build a Capsule Wardrobe by Starting with Art: Untitled by Wilfredo Lam

October 6, 2016   How cool is this?

Sleek and calm, but with that tiny little pop of gold eye shadow, and those hot pink lines...

As has been the theme so far this week, I'm starting with a very small, very neutral capsule wardrobe that might be found in almost anyone's closet, and then I'm adding just a few accent items. This gives you the opportunity to test-drive a new color in your wardrobe without going crazy...

As before, these few pieces give you a fair number of ways to get dressed:

This is basically the  "French 5-Piece Wardrobe" idea-  adding a handful of pieces each season to your core wardrobe. It's a simple way to try out a new accent color, or just to ... View the Post

Build a Capsule Wardrobe by Starting with Art: Proserpine by Dante Gabriel Rossetti

October 5, 2016

Ah, you've seen this before, I'm sure:

But did you know that Rossetti was working with a model who really LOOKS like this? Her name was Jane Morris; she was married to William Morris, the textile designer... (see the teal and black scarf below for one of his designs!)

What do you do if this kind of aesthetic appeals to you TREMENDOUSLY, but you live a very normal, ordinary life that doesn't involve having 3 feet of madly waving hair, or standing around all day in swishy velvet dresses, brooding over a pomegranate?

A few small additions might help channel that feeling for you...

As I did yesterday, let's start with a very simple wardrobe of extremely neutral garments that ... View the Post

Vase with Honesty by Vincent van Gogh

Build a Capsule Wardrobe by Starting with Art: Vase with Honesty by Vincent van Gogh

October 4, 2016

I'm going to take a rather different approach to working with art, for this week. One of the biggest concerns that you raise to me is that it's impossible to completely re-do a wardrobe from the very beginning. So I'm going to look at introducing accent colors and art inspirations into an existing wardrobe, and see how that works...First, let's start with our beautiful painting:

These were the colors that I saw within the painting. For the most part, they're nice neutrals, and thus should be easy to combine.

Here's where I want to change things, for now. Imagine that the above painting has become something of a fascination for someone; they've decided that, moving forward, they want it to be their ... View the Post

Capsule Wardrobe Color Palette – A Hint of Hibiscus, with Six Neutrals

September 30, 2016   Okay, this color does more than hint... but it's not as overpowering as some hot pink shades can be. There's a world full of colors, if you have the patience to look for it; it's possible to find just the right one!

The manufacturer calls this "Neon Geranium," but I've never seen a geranium this color! And I have seen hibiscus, at my mother's home, exactly this color...

It's easy to see how a fondness for this color could start with a sudden desire for a beautiful tote bag... And for what it's worth, this isn't a bad color to love; it looks good on a lot of people, and I found it pretty easy to combine with all of the neutrals in question. So if you're tempted, it's worth making a plan!

Tee – J.Crew; ... View the Post

Capsule Wardrobe Color Palette – A Sprig of Shamrock, with Six Neutrals

September 29, 2016   Why yes, I'm Irish... I've lived in Dublin! I love it there...

For some reason, the images arrived here in the blog post in a different order than usual! Ah, the wonders of computers...Frankly, this color was very difficult to find in scarves, so I thought that this would be a good opportunity to investigate the possibilities of fine jewelry. If you were born in May, maybe an emerald or two could be in your future?

This combination is unexpected, but I think it works...

earrings – John Hardy; cardigan - Kettlewell; grey tee – J. Crew;   pants – J. Crew; clutch – Red(V); loafers - Patricia Green;  necklace - Effy; grey cardigan – J. Crew; ring – John Hardy; sweater - ... View the Post
