Toronto – how I got it all packed

We're back!  And Toronto was wonderful - what a great, vibrant, busy, diverse city.  We will definitely go back, and I have much more to share with you about this trip.   But I received a lot of questions about how I packed - so I've got snapshots of the process!

The bag - empty.  Those are my ghastly workout shoes next to the bag, so you can see how small the bag actually is.  This is the Tumi Riggs carry-on - no wheels.  I didn't even realized that they MADE one with wheels...  Maybe Tumi should give me one of those, eh?

There's about 30% of my packing capacity already -  my shoes "bumpered" on the sides of my bag, and my pajamas rolled up and slid in between the shoes. ... View the Post

One outfit, six different scarves

June 13, 2013

It's tempting to starting thinking of each scarf as being "married" to (or at least going steady with) a particular outfit that you own, and moreover, to always reach for the same scarf when you put on a favorite outfit.  I do this often, and I'm trying to break out of this habit, and shake up my scarf/clothing combos a little bit.  So I took one outfit that I wear a lot  (this sweater is linen, so it can be worn through all but the hottest summer months) and tried to see how it would pair up with a variety of scarves.I show Hermes scarves here, but PLEASE bear in mind that this exercise is true of any scarves you own.  Vintage from a thrift store, hand-crafted from a street fair, or heritage ... A Common Capsule Wardrobe: A Variation of the standard, in navy and coral

May 20, 2013   Navy and pink were well-received, and almost immediately I received requests that would use coral rather than pink.  This is a particularly nice color combination that I often forget about! So this is The Common Wardrobe with which we will start:

 all clothes - L.L.Bean

Square scarf - Nina Ricci, square scarf - Antagoniste Paris, bracelet - Kenneth Jay Lane, earrings - Kara Ross, navy & coral rope and enamel necklace - Orly Genger, watch - Olivia Burton, bag - Debenhams, sunglasses - Guess, embroidered scarf - J. “You’re So French” – the most recent addition to the Style Shelf

May 2, 2013

As soon as I saw this available for sale, I knew it was going to go onto the Style Shelf. Aside from the fact that I'm terribly tired of book covers in hot pink (every "chic lit" novel in Ireland had either a pink or a lavender cover, I swear...), this is an interesting addition to the wee library. So here, in my less than expert translation, is what the authors have to say about cleaning out closets:

ARRANGE YOUR WARDROBE

"We have a tendency to choose the first clothes that are on top of the pile. It's easy, one does not waste time, and takes no risks, and one gets dressed automatically.  What a pity for all of those treasures which have been sleeping for years, and upon which you lavished such care ... Capsule Wardrobe Project 333: FAILURE, in the second week in my uniform

Well, not anything horrendous or drastic (let's be serious, last week wasn't a great week for many of us...), but when I woke up Friday morning to the sounds of SNOW HITTING MY WINDOW, I  retreated to my jeans, which I had not included in my 33 garments.  Of course, when I picked those 33 pieces of clothing, I didn't expect to have to dress for snow.  Sigh...Monday and Tuesday were great, similar to last week, I started with a black "suit", chose a bright tee shirt, and added a scarf to tie things together and brighten things up.  Tuesday was a core of black garments, with boots, a cardigan, and a cashmere scarf to keep warm,

Wednesday and Thursday were also very uncomplicated.Another core of black, ... View the Post

Capsule Wardrobe Project 333: My first week in “my” uniform

This was NOT the best week for me to begin the Project 333 - our weather was impressively wintery, so I had to do some creative layering, and piling on of scarves.  Happily, I managed to figure things out, and I was very pleased with how I felt...Monday and Tuesday - I started with my black "suit", added a pink tee shirt and a scarf, with some socks and loafers.  I was particularly delighted with the Tuesday outfit, in which I layered a sweater over my dress (which is something I will do all summer), but then added a white cashmere scarf, opaque tights, and my boots.  Instant cold-weather outfit!

Wednesday I went all black, with flats, an Hermes scarf and pearls.  Wearing tights with flats makes everything warmer. ... View the Post

A khaki & green summer wardrobe, with accessories

April 9, 2013

Many people have asked me to clarify how I choose the accessories that I put with these simple wardrobes; I will try to explain my thought process.  And some of you have expressed a desire to see these wardrobes with fewer shoes - thinking that these little vignettes would make great packing templates...The accessories I've chosen are:

Silk/cashmere cardigan – Diane von Furstenberg, sunglasses – Jimmy Choo, dangle earrings – Kara Ross,  necklace – Fossil, seashell earrings – Rose Pierre, tee shirt – Balmain, daisy bracelet – Stella &Dot, striped cotton scarf – Mapoesie, skirt – Sophie Hulme, fabric slingbacks – Andre Assous, ballet flats – Franco Sarto, gold sandals – Taryn Rose, ... Capsule Wardrobe Project 333 for warm weather – my search for a uniform

I won't even try to kid you - I've been under a lot of stress recently, and there's no apparent reason for it.  I have one of the easiest lives that any human being could want, but I still have been feeling pressured, inadequate, hurried to get things done, and as if much of what I do has been "weighed in the balance and found wanting."

So as the weather finally warms up, my goal is to simplify, and to try to give myself more time to accomplish things that will give me a sense of gratification and competence.  Thus, I'm stripping this summer's wardrobe back to the absolute basics - a uniform of sorts.

The late Olivia Goldsmith co-authored the above, very insightful, book (available here, finally at a reasonable price!). ... View the Post

How to wear a navy v-neck sweater

March 21, 2013   As before, you will see some familiar garments and accessories.  To me, it is a delightful surprise to start preparing a post with a new color of sweater, readjust my aesthetic brain to that color, and then find that there a lot of flattering "common ground" with previous posts that I've done...  Today I was particularly delighted to see how well yesterday's coral tee shirt and flats flattered the navy sweater and white jeans.  Although I think green and navy might be a new favorite for me!

Sweater – Burberry Brit, tee shirt – Dorothy Perkins, white jeans – J. Crew, shoes - SWIMS, peach tee shirt – Weekend by MaxMara, peach flats – Nude

Sometimes, knowing that you want to take your favorite scarf, and two absolutely LOVELY tee shirts is everything you need to get started...   And we all understand that these ideas extend beyond packing, right?  This might be a great shopping strategy for adding a couple of essential pieces to one's wardrobe, in order to get maximum mileage from a beautiful scarf.

Tee shirt - Hugo, cardigan – J. Crew, earrings – Irene Neuwirth, watch – Citizen, pants – Derek Lam, loafers – Tod’s, bag – Cambridge Satchel Company, suitcase - Tumi

Spring 2013 Accent: “Tender Shoots” in the office

February 21, 2013   Some of these garments just hint at the presence of "tender shoots"...

With that, I have exhausted both my ability to work with neon green, and the Pantone Spring 2013 colors.  And since one of my WONDERFUL readers found the link for the Fall 2013 colors, it begs a question - when should I start looking at the Fall/Winter colors?  As soon as the fall clothes are in the stores, in July?  Chime in with a suggestion!

love, Janice ... View the Post
